      Shockers 89-61 Missouri Southern

The Lions are picked 9th/10th of the fourteen teams in the MIAA.

Newcomer Jane Asinde led the Shocks with 17. Mariah McCully and Seraphine has 15 while DJ had 13.

Besides Asinde, nobody else appeared to be immediate contributors.

      But it is early.

Shocks played 14 players. The only player on the roster who did not play was 5-8 New Zealand Fr. guard Jayze'lee Waihi. Injury or Covid protocols I guess. Not sure. Only Seraphine (20) and Mariah (21) played 20 minutes or more in this game.

54 foul called and 66 free throws shot in the game. More or less evenly divided between the two teams. Yuk!

Shocks outrebounded the Lions 63-43. I guess 94 field goals and 23 free throws missed in this game. Sounded like the Shocks missed a lot of layups and close-in shots especially in the 1st half.

Asinde, McCully, Bastin and McCarty combined to shoot 21-41 (51.2%) from the field and 15-19 (78.9%) from the line. The rest of the team shot 11-38 (28.9%) from the fied and 5-12 (417%) from the line.

Not sure we'll know much about this team unitl they pick on someone their own size. I don't think that's the Chicago State game at home on the 9th. Wyoming on the road on the 13th should be a decent measuring stick.

As a follow-up to your "contributors" comment: 4 players (Asinde, McCully, Bastin, and McCarty) scored 60 points (67.4% of total pts) in 60 minutes of play (30% of total minutes available).

The rest of the team scored 29 points in 140 minutes with Strong (9 points / 16 minutes) and Anciaux (6 points / 17 minutes) getting the lion's share of those points.

The balance of the team: 14 points (15.7%) in 107 minutes (53.5%). However, if the Shocks can have 2 or 3 of these players also be able to defend and do the "little things", that will be a big help.

MSS played primarily 6 players (78.5% of total minutes) with 3 fouling out and 1 with 4 fouls.

Wichita State Signs Junior College Sharpshooter

Wichita State women's basketball head coach Keitha Adams announced the signing of junior college standout, Ambah Kowcun, to a National Letter of Intent Wednesday.

Wichita State women's basketball head coach Keitha Adams announced the signing of junior college standout, Ambah Kowcun, to a National Letter of Intent Wednesday.

Kowcun is a 5-foot-10 forward from North Dakota State College of Science by way of Adelaide, Australia. She is coming off a decorated freshman season for NDSCS where she averaged 23.2 points and 5.2 rebounds, while shooting 42 percent from the field, 41 percent from three-point range and 80.8 percent from the free throw line. Kowcun posted six games of 30 or more points and 17 games of 20-plus. Her 23.2 points per game ranked No. 3 nationally in NJCAA DI and her 534 total points ranked No. 2 in the country and were the third-most in school history.

The Shocks could certainly use some help with their long-range shooting. Hopefully, this young lady can make the jump to D-1 successfully.
