There needs to be some covering in my opinion. Maybe not a lot, but being able to hide under the roof at Eck Stadium during a drizzle or passing rain is a nice feature.

Here is the Oklahoma City Hall of Fame Softball Stadium where the WCWS is played. I guess that would qualify as not much covering.



Of course, with dirt infields in pretty much all softball facilities it doesn't take much of a passing rain to delay or postpone a game.
