  • Shocker SB v Creighton

The Shockers and Bluejays have three games scheduled for this weekend - a DH on Saturday with a 1 pm start time for the first game and a single game on Sunday starting at noon.

These games will open the season for Creighton. They are a preseason pick for fifth place of the nine teams in the Big East. Ashley Cantu and Mikaela Pechar are the returning offensive leaders, Cantu being all-conference in 2019. The only returning pitcher with significant innings is Mikayla Santa Cruz. Brent Vigness will begin his 28th year as their Head Coach.

The Shocks are 2-2 after their games at the Scrap Yard. Lauren and Neleigh had big weekends with both having an OPS above 1.500. Erin had two of the four starts. Unfortunately, one of them was against Texas. Like last year, Bailey and Caitlin are the other two arms that will get most of the innings.

Looks like the Shocks took advantage of the wind.

Addison Barnard may be having a career day in only her 2nd and 3rd games as a Shocker.

Shocks with 5 home runs in Game 1. Shocks with 5 home runs in the 3rd inning of Game 2. I suspect that may be a new school record and that one may stand for a long time. Two players with 2 home runs in the same inning (Perrigan and Barnard) might be one for the record books as well.

Butters was off to a bit of a slow start coming into this game. Hopefully, she is back on track.

Ryleigh Buck hits a 3-run jack in 4th to give the Shocks 6 homers in Game 2 on top of the 5 in Game 1. An 11 home run doubleheader no doubt is one for the record books as well.

Bailey gives up her first hit in the top of the third - a solo homer.

In the bottom half, the Shockers respond with a single, a two-run shot by Addison, and a solo poke by Butters. One out later, Lauren (is it Lolo? I forget the nicknames) also has a solo blast. Back-to-back doubles by Bailee and Ryleigh add another run. After a single, Addison cranks a three-run homer, her second bomb of the inning. Butters duplicates the feat with her second homer of the inning. Finally, the Bluejays bring on a reliever for the last out.

              10-3 Shockers after three.

In the bottom of the fourth, walk, walk, and a three-run homer by Ryleigh. Now 13-3 with no outs, and it is deja-vu all over again.

No more runs. 13-3 after four complete and another run-rule is three outs (and less than three runs) away.

Three up, three down and we have a ball game.

                Creighton 3-13(5) Shockers

Eleven hits for the Shockers including six home runs and two doubles. Five RBI for Addison and four for Ryleigh. The Shocks also benefitted from five walks.

Bailey gave up the three runs, only one earned, one hit, and three walks. She struck out five.

Creighton gets treated very rudely in their season opening games by the Shocks.

Seems like Creighton has had decent pitching in the past. A down year in that regard for the Bluejays maybe?? Or did Creighton bring their slo-pitch squad to Wichtia this weekend.

Holy One, you are our comfort and strength in times of sudden disaster, crisis, or chaos. Surround us now with your grace and peace through storm or earthquake, fire or flood. By your Spirit, lift up those who have fallen, sustain those who work to rescue or rebuild, and fill us with the hope of your new creation; through Jesus Christ, our rock and redeemer.

                      Shockers Run-Rule Bluejays in Doubleheader

Wichita State played its first home game in nearly two years and recorded a pair of run-rule wins over Creighton Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium. The Shockers won 14-2 and 13-3 with both games needing just five innings.

I guess you could say this was homecoming weekend for the Shocker softball team. This was the Shocks first home games in nearly two year. The Shockers played 27 games last spring, all away from home, when the season was cancelled due to Covid.

HCKB was 1-7 against Creighton prior to today during her time at WSU.

The Shockers celebrated the return to home and gave HCKB a nice gift in the process.

Freshman Addison Barnard had a career day going 4-7 with 3 home runs and a triple and 8 RBI in just the 2nd and 3rd games of her Shocker career. That will be tough to top.

Ryleigh Buck made her season debut and went 2-for-3 with a double, a homer and four RBI.

Madison Perrigan hit two solo home runs, bringing her career total to 39. She is now tied with Laurie Derrico and Cacy Williams for first on the career home run list. Madison has also moved into 2nd place on the career RBI list with 142 which is 11 behind Paige Luellen's 153.

Is it fair to ask if there will be a game tomorrow? I’d guess there will be...but you never know.

It is fair, and I would see no reason not to play.

Must be the same thing I'm missing? Perhaps that the beating that the Shocks laid on the Bluejays today was akin to a natural disaster.
