Watching a replay of the game.
ECU picking up just past half court in a zone press but really looking to trap in the corners. ECU has good athletes and they are pretty aggressive with their defensive play.
The Shocks had 9 turnovers and 7 offensive boards in the first quarter. Despite that the Shocks lead 13-10 at the end of the quarter as ECU was 3-20 from the field. I would say 5 of the turnovers were unforced but no doubt the press is bothering the Shocks.
The Shocks committed 7 more turnovers in the 2nd quarter and again I would say have their turnovers have been unforced.
Not saying ECU's pressure is not effective but the Shocks have just been careless at times and have a at least 4 travelling calls. The Shocks are shooting 48% from the field for the half (60% in the first quarter) but they missed a lot of good looks in the 2nd quarter. They are in the game as ECU is only shooting 24% from the field in the first half on 8-33. The Shocks outrebounded ECU 23-17 but 9 of ECU's rebounds were offensive rebounds. The Shocks did hold ECU's best player LaShonda Monk scoreless in the first half playing a box and 1 when she was in the game. ECU probably pretty happy with a 26-all tie at the half.
The Shocks had another 11 turnovers in the 3rd quarter but the big thing is that they tried to be more aggresssive with their defense and they gave ECU a bunch of layups and wide open threes. Plus they went away from the box and 1 and ECU's Monk scored 13 points. HCKA picked up technical which she deserved but one I don't blame her a bit on. The refs let ECU get away with a lot of contact.
The 4th quarter was the Shocks best offensive quarter of the game but ECU did back off a bit on their defensive pressure in that quarter. Another 7 turnovers by the Shocks. LaShonda Monk ended up with 18 points in the half. 16 offensvie rebounds in the game for ECU. However, ECU had a lot of opportunities for offensive rebounds as they missed 42 shots. The Shocks had 10 offensive rebounds on 23 misses but ECU took 22 more shots from the field then did the Shocks. ECU ended hitting 9-22 from three land vs 5-13 for the Shocks. ECU also outscored the Shocks from the line on 17-22 vs 12-19 for the Shocks.
I don't think the Shockers were quite ready for ECU's pressure but in their defense this was only their 2nd game in the past 14 days and the Shocks have had only 2 practices with 10 players available this entire season. On top of that the Shocks were not allowed to have a men's practice squad this season. So it would have been very difficult to recreate ECU's pressure in practice. ECU has bigger and stronger athletes and they are very aggressive. The Shocks just were not up to the task and perhaps are becoming a bit discouraged with how the season as progessed to this point.
