That doesn't sound like lack of discipline by the players. She definitely doesn't fit the profile of a disgruntled player upset about playing time (she was team's 2nd leading scorer at the time of her departure).

hahaha like I stated originally "where there's smoke there's fire" I stand by that statement.

And they are not inmates, they are STUDENT ATHLETES...although maybe Rachel felt like an inmate and that is why she departed!

Shocks end their pause today at Temple with only 8 active players which has been pretty standard fare this year. Carla Budane making her debut with the Shockers but has only had 2 practices.

Starting for the Shocks is Asia Strong, Trajatra Colbert, Carla Bremaud, Shamaryah Duncan and Seraphine Bastin. The bench is Ene Adams, Carl Budane and Mariah McKinney. Hopefully, Mariah is on scholarship the 2nd semester. Key players not available are D.J. McCarty and Mariah McCully.

Shockers lead 19-16 at the end of the first quarter on the strength of 5-8 from three point range which is excellent for them and a bit out of character.

The Shocks only picked up 3 fouls in the quarter but 2 of those are on Seraphine. Temple only committed 1 foul in the quarter.

Seraphine picked up her 3rd foul with 6:42 left in the 1st half. Not good with the Shocks already being very short-handed in ball handlers with D.J. and Maria McCully out.

Carla Budane gets her first 2 points as a Shocker on a layup at the half-time buzzer on a nice assist from Samaryah Duncan who has been forced into point guard duty to give the Shocks a 34-31 lead at half.

Temple has one of the better post players in the league in Mia Davis who comes in averaging 19.2 points per game. So far Asia Strong is getting the better of that match up with 12 points to 5 for Davis plus Davis has 3 turnovers to only 1 for Asia.

All in all probably a better than expected performance so far for the short-handed and short-practiced Shocks. We'll have to see if they can hang in there for another 20 minutes.

Shocks maintain a 49-45 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter but Temple has pulled ahead at 53-51 with 5:39 to play in the game.

Tulsa pulls away late thanks in no small part to some pathetic offiiciating for a 65-55 win. I think the Shocks also ran out of gas a bit in the final 5 minutes but that was less of a factor than the officiating in the margin of victory for Temple.

Got to give the Lady Shocks kudos for that effort everything considered. One of the better games this year in the post for the Shocks as Asia and Trajata combined for 30 points on 12-26 shooting. Freshman guard Shamaryah Duncan really struggled shooting but had a good floor game with 5 rebounds and 5 assists against only 2 turnovers.

The Shocks have nothing to be ashamed off. The same can not be said for the way the officials closed out the game.

Shockers at Cincy today. Both teams with only 8 players today. Shocks game plan appears to pack in a tight zone and dare Cincy to beat them from the outside. So far its working as the Shocks lead 18-11 at the end of the 1st quarter behind 8 points from Seraphine Bastin while holding Cincy's Iimari Thomas, who is averaging 24 points per game, scoreless.

Shockers lead 32-27. Asia Strong wih a good quarter with 6 points while Carla Bremaud chipped in 5 points. However, Asia strong had two really poor BBIQ plays. Only 1 of them proved costly however, She basically made a soft bounce pass right to Cincy guard in the back court that lead to a wide open layup. That simply was a total lack of court awareness. At the end of the hf Cincy's post player took a 3 with about 5 second left. It was an air ball that was well short of the baseline. It hit well in bounds, took a big bounce but Asia stepped out bounds and caught the ball before it came down with 2.4 seconds left. Fortunately, Cincy was unable to take advantage but again showed a total lack of court awareness.

So far the Shocks strategy is working okay. They have held Thomas to 3 points on an offensive rebound put back and foul. However, Cincy does have player who normally scored 7 points a game that has scored 11 in the 1st half.

The Shocks only had 4 fouls in the 1st half but 2 were on Trajata Colbert early so she only played 3 minutes. Cincy only had 5 fouls all in the 2nd quarter.

Trajata picks up her 3rd foul early in the 3rd quarter on a blocking foul but Seraphine was the cause as she did not wait for Trajata to get set. Asia Strong has picked up 2 fouls in the 3rd quarter as well. Shock have already put Cincy into the bonus with 4:21 to go and have given up 4 quick points at the line. Make that 5. The Shocks lack of BBIQ at times is frustrating. They seem to happen in spurts now and then. This team is not real great in situational basketball.

Overall a very good 3rd quarter for the Shocks as they outsccored Cincy 18-9 in the quarter to extendd their lead to 50-36 and that was with Trajata Colbert missing 3 of 4 free throws to close out the quarter. The Shocks were 3-4 from three in the quarter with makes from Duncan, Strong and Bremaud and a miss by Trajata who probably should not even taking threes.

Now can the Shockers hold off Cincy for one final quarter.

Not a great start to the quarter. A Cincy layup, a Shocker turnover, aCincy free throw has quickly cut the lead to 50-39. Shockers playing like a team that doesn't know how to win nor really thinks it can win. Need to settle down. I guess a season like this can do that to you.

Cincy pulls to within 6 with 4;00 minutes and will be in the bonus at the line for the rest fo the game.

Shocks are able to hold on for a 60-52 win and break their 6 game losing streak. Key plays down the stretch for the Shocks were a big three pointer from Asia Strong after Cincy had cut the lead to 52-46 with 4 minutes to play, a tough driving floater by Seraphine Bastin with 1:30 to play after Cincy cut the lead to 55-52 and 3 out 4 free throws by Trajata Colbert, a 42% free throw shooter, in the final 20 seconds.

Asia led the Shocks with 17 points, Trajata had 12 points and 8 rebounds, Seraphine had 11 points and 8 rebounds and 6 assists (but also 6 turrnovers) and Shmaryah Duncan had 8 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists in perhaps her best game. Carla also had 8 points and the Cincy analyst commented numerous times during the game how Carla just doesn't miss. Carla, who played all 40 minutes, was 2-10 from the field. Brilliant analysis. And these people actually get paid money.

Shockers were still missing 2 of their top 3 guards as D.J. McCarty and Mariah McCulley did not play again today. The Shockers showed they are capable of playing pretty good basketball. They just haven't showed that they can sustain that level of play throughout a game. Today the sustained the good play long enough to come away with a nice win in the end.

Stand by the statement all you want. I used poetic license with my comment, so there's zero reason to take offense. In this case, the student athlete was wrong. Period. The student athletes don't make the decisions, the coaches do. And the coach did here. Sorry it didn't work out, but it's 100% on the student athlete. Best of luck to her wherever she ends up.

Shocks did a great job rebounding in this game winning the boards 49-35 against a pretty good rebounding Tulane team. Seraphine with 14 points and 13 rebounds and Trajata with 11 points and 16 rebounds both had doulble-doubles. Shocks only hit 3-20 from three. While that was a problem Tulane was only 2-16. The game was lost at the free throw line. Tulane hit 19-27 while the Shocks were 4-6. Not exactly a home whistle.

Shocks fall to 1-5 in AAC play.

Shocks taking on Temple today at Koch Arena. Shocks lost to the Owls on January 23rd 55-65.

Shocks off to a bad start trailing 11-18 at the end of the 1st quarter and not looking good.

Not much better, if any, in the 2nd quarter as Temple extends their lead to 34-23 at the half. Luckily for the Shocks Mariah McCulley had a good offensive first half scoring 13 points on 5-6 from the field and the one shot she missed was a relatively easy layup.

The rest of the team has scored 10 points on 4-19 (0-8 from three). The Shockers alleged leaders Bastin and Bremaud are scoreless on 0-7 shooting. The Shocks have been outrebounded 22-14 including 6-1 on the offensive boards. Fortunately, Temple is shooting the ball great or it could have really gotten ugly.

Quite frankly the Shockers look rather disinterested so far. Hopefully, we will see a much better energy level in the 2nd half if nothing else.

Shocks didn't play great in the 3rd quarter but it was good enough to outscore Temple 13-10 and narrow the Temple lead to 44-36 after 3 quarters. I think the two teams must have been trying to make the case for the NCAA to drop women's basketball. Perhaps replace it with Pickle Ball. That said the Shocks can still win this game with one good quarter.

Shocks show a little bit more energy over the final 6 minutes but to no real avail as Temple wins 65-57. Seraphine scored 12 points in the 4th quarter but 5 of those were layups in the final 3 minutes when Temple pretty much let her get to the basket unimpeded in order to avoid fouling. Shocks hit there scoring average in AAC play. Keitha thought her kids played hard. Not sure I agree with that.

One interesting stat was that Temple had 19 assists on 22 baskets. The Shockers had 9 assists on 24 baskets.

Mariah McCulley was the bright spot with 18 points on 7-14 shooting including 2-2 on treys. And she is still probably not in game shape. The rest of the Shocks were 0-7 on treys. The Shocks were also only 7-14 from the line.

Shocks fall to 1-6 in conference play.

Other teams are just more athletic than we are and play less "hero ball" as IHCIB calls it.

I don't think the AAC teams are that much more athletic than the Shocks. Maybe a bit bigger on average but not much. My opinion it comes down more to how they are coached and perhaps not a real high BBIQ.

Now the Shocks do generally give up a lot of athleticism at the 3 with Carla Bremaud. I had high hopes for Carla when she signed witht the Shocks but she is pretty limited. A carch and shoot if she is wide open perimeter play, a good free throw shooter and a sub-par defender and rebounder. The latter weaknesses due to her lack of athleticism. Otherwise our athleticism is pretty good I think. Can't say the same thing about the teams overall skill level.

After having their mid-week game with UCF cacelled the Shockers were back on the court for the 1st time in a week taking on Tulane who beat the Shocks in Wichita 10 days ago 57-55. Tulane currently sits in a 3rd place tie with Houston in the AAC standings at 9-4 and is 13-5 overall.

Both teams played pretty well in the 1st quarter and the Shocks led 19-18 with what should have been the final possession of the half but a Mariah McCully led to a Tulane break away layup to give Tulane a 20-19 at the end of the 1st quarter.

The Shocks matched the weather in Doo Dah as they went stone cold in the 2nd quarter. After a nice drive by McCully at the 8:10 mark the Shocks went scoreless Asia Strong hit two free throws with 42 seconds left in the quarter after being fouled on a putback attempt after grabbing and offensive rebound. But the damage was done as Tulane pulled away to a 36-25 lead at the half as the Green Wave outscored the Shocks 16-6 in the 2nd quarter. The Shocks were 2-16 from the field in the 2nd quarter. The Shock had some decent looks but simply could not find the range while Tulane was 6-12 including 3-6 treys.

The Shocks bounced back in the 3rd quarter scoring 23 points aided by getting 10 free throws and hitting 7 of them. The Shockers were 7-13 from the field inclduing 2-3 three pointers in the quarter. Unfortuantely, Tulane scored 27 in the quarter on 10-18 from the field including 3-6 three pointers and 4-4 from the line as the Green Wave extened their lead to 15 at 63-48.

The Shocks after trailing by as much as 20 in the 3rd quarter whittled the lead down to 11 at 68-57 with about 5:45 to play and had a wide open look from Bremaud in the right corned but Carla was unable to knock it down. A fast break layup and a steal and a nice floater in traffic by D.J. McCarty pulled the Shock to within 9 at 70-61 with 3:00 minutes to play. After a miss by Tulane D.J. rebounded the ball and took it the length of the court and made a very nice dump off to Asia but Asia fumbled the pass allowing the Tulane defense to recover and Asia missed a well guarded shot in the lane. Tulane then hit a 3 pointer from the left corner to to back up by double figures a 73-61 with 2:16 to play before Tulane finished off the gme on 6-2 run for a 79-63 win over the Shocks. D.J. carried the Shocks in the 4th quarter scoring 13 of the Shockers 15 point in the quarter on 5-8 from the field and 2-2 from the line plus 3 rebounds and a steal. By far her most impressive quarter of play this year.

Tulane had 5 players in double figures while shooting 28-56 (50.0%) from the field including 9-20 (45.0%) on 3 pointers and 14-19 (73.7%) from the line. Tulane outrebounded the Shocks 41-33 but Tulane had 16 turnovers to only 9 for the Shocks.

The Shocks had 3 players in double figures while shooting 23-64 (35.9%) including 3-15 (20.0%) on 3 pointers and a very good 14-17 (82.4%) from the free thow line.

Asia Strong had 18 points on 6-14 from the field and 6-7 from the free throw line plus grabbed 6 rebounds had 1 assist and no turnovers

D.J. McCarty had 17 points (13 in the 4th quarter per above) on 7-12 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line plus grabbed 4 rebounds had 2 assists and 1 turnover.

Mariah McCully had 10 points on 4-16 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line plus 3 assists offset by 3 turnovers.

Seraphine Bastin only had 4 points on 2-3 shooting but did grab 6 rebound to tie Asia for team high in that category.

I think the game was closer than the final score indicates. The poor 2nd quarter by the Shocks pretty much was the difference in the game. That said I think the better team did win but in a game that for the most part was more competitive than the final score might indicate.

The Shocks fall to 4-9 overall and 1-7 in AAC play. Last place among the 10 AAC teams still playing. SMU shut down their season in late December after playing 6 games. I give the Shockers credit for continuing to play with limited roster and as many stops and starts to their season as just about anyone has had.

The Shockers are scheduled to play Memphis on Wednesday evening and Friday evening this week with both games in Memphis. One of these games was originally scheduled for January 13th in Wichita but was postponed when the Shockers put the season on pause due to Covid issues. The good news is that Memphis is only 2-7 in AAC play so the Shocks have a chance to win both of these games despite both being at Memphis.

If it's not one thing, it's another:

Wichita State at Memphis on Feb. 17 Postponed

The American Athletic Conference has announced the Wichita State at Memphis game scheduled for Monday, Feb. 17 has been postponed due to inclement weather in Memphis.

The date and game time of the rescheduled conference matchup between the teams will be announced at a later date.

The Lady Shockers had both their games with SMU wiped out when SMU cancelled their season on December 20th. With the latest announcement they have 7 postponements. Both scheduled games with Memphis and with UCF have been postponed and home games with Tulsa, ECU and USF have been postponed.

With only 2 seeks remaining in the season it's seems unlikely all of these games will be made up. Maybe when the travel to ECU for a Saturday game on Feb 20th the Shocks can stay over and play ECU again on Sunday.

The Shocks have quite a bit of time around the following Saturday, Feb 27th when they were scheduled to play SMU. Unfortunately, the only other AAC team not schedule to play on Feb 27th is Tulane and the Shocks have already played them twice.

The play Tulsa in the regular season finale on March 2nd. Maybe they could double up with Tulsa as the AAC Championship doesn't start until March 8th or perhaps work in another game sometime after March 2nd.

I just don't see them making up more than 1 or 2 of these postponed games. Perhaps 3 at most.

The Shocks played at ECU this afternoon (Saturday, Feb 20) and lost 59-74. After being tied 26-all at half time the Lady Pirates put it to the Lady Shocks outscoring the Shocks 30-11 in the 3rd quarter to take a 19 point lead and pretty much ice the game as the Shockers could get no closer than 14 points in the final quarter.

Easy to find the boogeyman in this one. The Shockers turned it over 34 times vs 16 for ECU. That's a season high for the Shocks and 2nd highest under K

Asia Strong was the only Shocker in double figures with 20 points and she also tied DJ McCarty for the team high in rebounds with 7.

The only Shocker players not to turn the ball over were reserves Carla Budane who played 10 minutes and Mariah McKinniey who played 5 minutes. Mariah McCully had 11 turnovers, DJ McCarty 7, Asia Strong 5, Seraphine Bastin 4, Carla Bremaud 3 with Trajata Colbert and Ene Adams 2 each.

While DJ McCarty had a career high in rebounds and contributed 4 assists and 3 steals she had a very poor offensive game going 3-10 from the field and 2-7 from the line. Mariah McCarty was only 3-9 from the field but did make 3-4 from the line. Seraphine and Carla only had 9 shots between the hitting 5 but neither of them made to the free throw line. That's unusual for Seraphine.

Not sure what kind of defense ECU used against the Shocks to cause this. I will have to watch a replay of the game to see what happened. Perhaps the stop and go nature of the season is just getting to the Lady Shockers. It has been a mess.

The Shocks fall to 1-8 in AAC play and are last among the 10 teams still playing. SMU was 0-2 in AAC games when they cancelled their season.
