  • Lady Shocks Host Indiana State on Sunday @ 2:00 pm

The Lady Shocks (13-6, 7-1) need to bounce back from their poor performance against Illinois State quickly as Indiana State (10-10, 4-4) visits Koch Arena Sunday to close out the 1st half of the Valley Season.

The Lady Shocks will still be in a strong position at the midway point if they can win this game. That will put the Shocks at 8-1. If Missouri State can take care of Illinois State in Springfield then the Lady Shocks will carry a 2-game lead into the second half.

Indiana State started strong in MVC play at 4-0 with home wins over Evansville, SIU and Illinois State (67-53) and a nice road win at UNI. However, they have now lost 4 straight at Bradley and Missouri State and at home against Creighton and Drake. So it's hard to predict which team will show up on Sunday. The fact that they handled ILS so easily tells you they are very capable of beating the Lady Shocks. The Shocks will have to play much better than they did Friday vs Illinois State to win this game.

The Shocks need to find some offense and they need to improve their rebounding. While Inidana State does not shoot the 3-ball as well as Illinois State who came to town as the 3rd best 3-point shooting team in the nation, they do like the 3-ball. Indiana State is cranking up 19.2 treys per game and making 33.9% of those. However, they are shooting 39.2% of their treys in conference play. 37% of their shots come from behind the arc.

Indiana State is similar to Illinois State in that they have balanced scoring and get 80% of their scoring from their starting lineup which is likely to be:

6'4" SR C Shannon Thomas - 12.7 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 65.8% FT Shooter, but is hitting 80% in MVC play - This will be a tough match-up for the Shocks. She had 13 points and 8 rebounds against MSU on Friday.

6'0" Sr G/F Deja Mattox - 13.1 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 36-74 (48.6%) 3-Pt Shooter, 85.2% FT Shooter - Perhaps the Sycamores best all-round player. Mattox pumped in a career high 31 points in they Sycamores' loss to MSU on Friday on only 14 shots. She was 7-10 on treys and 4-4 from the line. Might also be a tough match-up for the Lady Shocks. Deja is a little inconsisent in her scoring she has 8 games in single digits (including two 2-point games) and 5 games of 20+ points (20,22,23,25 and 31).

5'6" Sr G Brittany Schoen - 10.6 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 48-157 (30.6%) 3-Pt Shooter, 76.9% - Not a great % but looks like she loves the 3-ball and is not bashful about taking them. However, at 5'6" Shocks should be able to defend her if they put their minds to it.

Thomas is already a 1,000 point career scorer and Mattox (962) and Schoen (993) are poised to join that club.

    5'10' So G Anna Munn - 10.1 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 36-87 (41.4%) 3-Pt Shooter, 94.3% FT shooter - don't want to foul this young lady. At 33-35 doesn't get to the line a lot.

5'9" Jr G Taylor Whitley - 7.8 PPG, 2.7 RPG - does not shoot many treys (1-8) - also only hitting 61.4% from the line. Just recently worked her way back into the starting lineup after starting the season opener and then missing 10 games due to injury.

Most likely support off the bench:

6'1" Fr F Racheal Mahan whose PT and production has jumped in conference play. In 8 MVC games she is averaging 5.3 PPG and 3.3 RPG in 15.4 MPG

5'9" Fr G Natasha Zurek whose PT and production has dropped a little in conference play. In 8 MVC games she is averaging 2.8 PPG and 2.8 RPG in 13.5 MPG. My guess is her playing time has diminished with Whitley Taylor getting back in the lineup.

5'9" Fr G Jessica Valley who averages 2.1 PPG and 2.1 RPG in 14.1 MPG

The Sycamores are similar to the Shocks in that their starting lineups are pretty experienced but their bench support is pretty inexperienced.

The Shocks generally start 2 Seniors and 3 Juniors. All the players available to the Shocks off the bench are all 1st year D-1 players.

    Good luck Lady Shocks.

Well we avoid the trifecta of bad karma after the Eagle piece on the "league leading" teams.

                      Great job, ladies!

It was a fun and lively crowd of maybe 1,600 in the building. And Kudos to the Lady Shocks softball team for getting behind their fellow student athletes. And even though a Sycamore is a deciduous tree I got a kick out of the Pine tree limb and hachet the softballers brought to help chop down the Trees. I'm sure Coach B has encouraged her Ladies to get behind their fellow student athletes and I hope they receive some reciprocation this Spring. I sure wish more of their fellow students would follow their lead.

It was a very entertaining game if you like games of runs and responses. Indiana State started the game very well and, with the Shocks shooting poorly early (especially Jazimen Gordon), the Sycamores jumped out to a 10 point lead at 7:00 minutes in and still led by 10 at the midway point of the 1st half. The Shocks started to chip away but still trailed by 7 at the 4:00 minute mark. The Shocks then went on a 10-2 run capped by Krystle Henderson's coast-to-coast finish described above by DSB for a 36-35 halftime lead.

The Shocks continued the momentum into the second half increasing their lead to 46-35 to extend the end of half run to 20-2 at the 16:38 mark of the second half. However, at about the 14 minute mark with the Shocks leading 49-39 Indiana State responded with three consecutive 3-point baskets and a layup for an 11-0 run in a span of a little over 4 minutes to regains the lead at 50-39 with 9:42 remaining.

The teams battled back and forth from their until about the 3:00 minute mark. With the Shocks leading 62-60 and the shot clock winding down Jessica Diamond knifed between the two defenders at the top of the zone and hit a tough 14 jumper as the shot ticked to zero to put the Shocks up 64-60. On the ensuing possession Indiana State hit one of 2 free throws to pull within three 64-61. The Shocks worked the shot clock down to 4 seconds at which point Jazimen Gordon hit a big jumper over 6'4" Shannon Thomas to put the Shocks up 66-61. That was the dagger. Indiana State missed a trey on their next possession and Haleigh and Jessica slammed the door shut each hitting 4 free throws down the stretch with no misses.

The game was certainly much closer and hard fought than the 74-63 final might indicate.

The Shocks had good balanced scoring attack with Haleigh contributing a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jazimen also scored 16 after starting 2-7 from the field in the 1st half. She bounced back to hit 5-7 from the field and 2-2 from the line in the second half. Jessica chipped in 15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Chynna hit double figures with 10 points and added 7 rebounds. Alicia contributed 8 points including 2 key baseline shots in the second half after Indiana State had rallied to regain the lead.

The Shocks only hit 3 of their first 7 free throw attempts but hit 16 of the final 17 attempts including the 8-8 performance by Haleigh and Jessica in the final minute to put the game away.

Missouri State did defeat Illinois State today which gives the Shocks a full 2-game lead at the mid-way point of the conference season. Missouri State is starting to play much better since their loss to the Shocks. Shocks have tough set of 5 road games facing them in the second half. The upcoming stretch of road games at Drake, Creighton and Missouri State is a tough stretch and the road games at Indiana State and Illinois State later in the month will certainly not be easy games by any stretch of the imagination. However, if you had told me before the season that the Shocks would be 8-1 at the halfway point with a 2-game lead I would have called you crazy.

Today though was a fun day and the Lady Shocks deserve a lot of credit for how they bounced back from the Illinois State loss and also for the way the battled through adversity today to pull out a hard earned and important win.

The Sycamores played zone (nearly?) the entire game, some 2-3, some 1-3-1 which they trapped out of. Krystle got 24 minutes and did not even sub in until about the 15 minute mark of the first half. I assume she was doing the best job at directing the offensive attack against the zone - and we were far more crisp than against the Redbirds.

There was a stretch in the second half where Brittany Schoen of ISU could have knocked down threes with all the lights off in the gym - she was unconscious and her shooting got them back in the game. She finished 5-8 on treys and led the Sycamores with 20.

Following the weekend games, the Shocks now have an RPI rank of 92. Missouri State is at 61, Creighton at 80 and Illinois State at 108. But these numbers are really for giggles because as @1972Shocker has pointed out, with the Valley being a one-bid conference, the Valley tournament is all that matters in getting to the NCAA tournament.

EDIT: The new Bracketology with Charlie Creme has that MVC team (currently, the Shocks since we lead the league) as a 13 seed.

This week's Women's Mid-Major has the Shocks remaining at 22. Missouri State moved from 16 to 14, and Northern Iowa moved from 14 to 17. Illinois State is RV.
