Game One - Shockers v Maryland

    Starting lineup:

    Sydney - 2b
    Ryleigh - 3b
    Butters - c
    Neleigh - 1b
    Bailee - cf
    Bailey - dp
Bailey Urban - rf (freshman from Omaha)
    Kaylee - ss
    Wylie - lf
    Caitlin - p

Courtney Wyche, a freshman, is in the circle for Maryland.

The Shocks score one in the first: walks to Syndey and Ryleigh, but Syndey is thrown out on the front end of a double steal attempt. An outfield error on a ball hit by Neleigh scores Ryleigh.

Bailey starts the game in the circle as a sub for Caitlin. Caitlin can reenter later if needed. A hit batter for the Terrapins in the first, but the Shockers lead 1-0 after one.

In the second, Kaylee has a two-out triple, but the Shocks cannot push her across. Wyche already has five 3-2 counts in the first two innings. Three-up, three-down on three strikeouts by Bailey (four for the game) in the bottom half. Still 1-0.

Sydney leads off the third with a walk on still another 3-2 count. Ryleigh follows with a double to score her. Butters singles to advance Ryleigh to third, and Neleigh's infield ground ball scores Ryleigh on a fielder's choice. Another three-up, three-down inning for Bailey. Shocks lead 3-0 after three.

In the top of the fourth, Kaylee walks on yet another 3-2 count. Sydney's one-out single brings on a relief pitcher for the Terps, a sophomore who pitched 7.0 innings last year, and who gets the next two outs. In the bottom of the fourth, Bailey gives up her first hit, a single, but picks up strikeouts six and seven. Remains 3-0, Shockers.

Neleigh walks in the fifth and advances to third on two wild pitches with Bailey U receiving a walk among the wild pitches. From there, a single by Kaylee scores Neleigh, and a single by Wylie scores Bailey U. Another pitcher is on for Maryland, the senior on the staff, who gets the final out of the inning. Now 5-0 Shockers.

In the bottom of the fifth, Maryland gets a two-out double followed by two walks to load the bases. But Bailey bears down to get a strikeout, her second of the inning and ninth of the game. Still 5-0.

The Shockers strike (pun intended) quickly in the sixth: Ryleigh doubles and Butters homers. Neleigh singles and Lauren walks as a pinch-hitter. Bailey U doubles to score another run. With the lead now at 8-0, the runs-ahead rule is in play.

In the bottom half, two strikeouts among the three outs. Shockers win, 8-0(6).

Bailey gives up two hits and has eleven strikeouts. Ryleigh has two doubles and an RBI, Butters has two hits including the homer and two RBI, and Kaylee has a triple and a single for those with multiple hits.

This is certainly a game the Shocks would expect to win on paper and they did so on the field. A good start.

Game Two - Shockers at Texas

Same batting order for the Shockers with Erin McDonald in the circle for the Shocks and Miranda Elish for Texas.

In the Shocker first, Sydney singles, Ryleigh is hit by a pitch, a fielder's choice and an RBI single by Neleigh. Butters then scores on a wild pitch. The Horns answer with two runs of their own on a sac fly and RBI-double, garnering three hits in the inning. 2-2 after one.

The Shockers get two runners in scoring position in the second on a walk to Bailey U, an infield single by Wylie and a passed ball, but Elish fans two to end the inning. Erin has a three-up, three-down bottom of the inning.

Three more Shockers strikeout in the third, bringing Elish's total to seven. Erin has settled in it seems, having another three-up, three-down inning. Tied 2-2 after three.

Bailey U leads off with a walk in the fourth and is sacrificed to second but advances no further. Texas scores in the bottom half on a walk, double, and two-out single to take a 4-2 lead after four innings.

Ryleigh leads off the fifth with a single and is still at first base three outs later. The Horns add to their lead with a single, two-out walk, and two-RBI double. Caitlin is on in relief. Two singles deliver another run. Horns, 7-2.

In the sixth, Texas loads the bases with no outs on a double, walk and single. With one out, two runs score on an infield groundout, the Texas speedster scoring all the way from second. A single then ends the game by the runs-ahead rule.

      Shockers 2-10(6) Texas

The Shocks manage five singles with Neleigh getting an RBI. Elish fanned ten. Erin pitched well in a few innings. Caitlin did not.

I think all of the games in this tournament are on LHN if you have that channel.

I suppose the biggest positive today was Bailey Lange's 2-hit, 11 strikeout, 6 inning shut out over Maryland. Butter's season off to a solid start as well.

Texas kind of ripped Erin and Caitlyn. Not total surprise that would happen against the #6 ranked Longhorns. Perhaps Bailey will get to see how effective she can be against the Longhorns on Saturday.

Although her stat line was seven earned runs with seven hits and three walks over 4.2 innings, she did manage to retire seven in a row in the middle, eight if you count a caught-stealing. She turned the corner last year, and I think will do well this year. But you are right, starting the season against #6 is a tough ask.

Erin pitched well outside of the first inning. 4th inning TX gets a 2 out 2 RBI ground ball single that goes through the right side which if it is a couple feet to the left is easily fielded by Syd McKinney and we get out of the inning. Also, 5th inning TX has a 2 out 2 RBI double to left field that is played well by Wylie but just is about a foot taller than her hitting the wall right above her glove. Not saying that they win the game, but Shockers were very competitive with TX even though score didn’t show it that well. TX is really good.

Game Three - Shockers v Lamar

This is just in anticipation. I will probably miss the major part of it.

I will let flyingMoose give the details, but the Shocks are putting the wood to Lamar early. 5 in the 1st and 7 more in the top of the 2nd and it's 12-0 starting the bottom of the 2nd.

Back in the bottom of the fifth at 19-0. Let me pull something together.

Five runs on five hits in the top of the first highlighted by a two-run homer by Ryleigh and a two-run single by Wylie. Caitlin in the circle for the Shocks.

Seven more runs on five hits, two walks and an error in the second. Highlights are a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double by Lauren and the same for Sydney later in the inning.

The Shockers score two more in the fourth when a double by Bailey U is followed by a home run by Kaylee. 14-0 Shocks.

Five more runs in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Neleigh and Lauren hit back-to-back homers. Lauren Johnson (freshman from Maize South) has a two-RBI double and Adi drives in a run with another double to complete the scoring.

Mckenzie Weber is on to pitch the fifth and gives up two runs.

                        Shockers 19-2(5) Lamar

Caitlin gave up four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in her four innings. Mckenzie gave up two hits and two walks and the two runs in her inning.

Multi-hit game by Lauren (three with a double and homer), Bailey U (three with a double), Sydney (two with a double), Neleigh (two with a homer) and Wylie (two singles). Lauren had four RBIs and Sydney had three.

Lauren was the DP, the only lineup change from yesterday.

                          Game Four - A&M-CC v Shockers

Erin is in the circle for the Shocks, and Lauren remains as the DP.

After a three-up, three-down top of the first including two strikeouts by Erin, the Shockers open the bottom half by loading the bases: walk, hit by pitch and error. Neleigh makes the Islanders pay with a grand slam home run. A single, walk and single load the bases again with just one out, and a single by Wylie drives in two more runs. A pitching change is followed by a sac fly to complete the scoring. 7-0.

Erin gives up a single in the second but gets two more strikeouts. In the bottom half, Neleigh doubles and Bailey U brings her home with a single to make the score 8-0 after two complete.

A&M-CC gets on the board with a solo homer in the third. A walk and another single by Wylie lead off the Shocker third, but no runs score. 8-1 after three.

A three-run Islander home run in the fourth with one out, and the game has suddenly become interesting. Erin gets two outs to end the inning. On to the bottom of the fourth.

Single, groundout and single by Lauren scores Butters. 9-4 after four full.

With two outs in the fifth, A&M-CC gets a walk and a single but does not score.

The Shocks close out the game in the bottom of the fifth. Butters doubles home two runs, and Bailey U hits a two-out, three-run homer.

                          A&M-CC 4-14(5) Shockers

Among the thirteen hits for the Shocks are a double and homer by Neleigh, two hits with a double by Butters, two hits with a homer by Bailey U, and three singles by Wylie.

Erin pitched all five innings, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks. She struck out six.

BTW, don't believe any of the pitching ERAs in the LiveStats. They are calculated based on a nine-inning baseball game.

Impressive day swinging the sticks although hard to know for sure how to value that against this competition. Caitlyn's outing in the circle in Game 1 was a positive although again tough to really evaluate. We'll have to see how Lamar and TAM-CC do with more games under their belts.

Looking forward to see how Bailey Lange and the Shocks will fare against the Longhorns tomorrow.

Game Five - Shockers at Texas

Bailey in the circle as expected and is hitting. Some changes in the lineup. Bailey U has moved a spot. Lauren Johnson is in center field (she goes by Lolo?) as the Flex, and Bailee is sitting. Bailee has not hit much at all this weekend.

Butters and Neleigh get two-out singles in the first, but no runs for the Shocks. The Horns do get runs - five of them, capped by a three-run homer.

No one scores in the next three innings, Bailey getting help from two double plays.

With two outs, the Shockers string together singles by Wylie, Sydney, and Ryleigh to score in the fifth.

In the bottom half, Texas score three runs on singles, an error, and a walk. Hailey comes on in relief, her first appearance of the season. She promptly gives up a double to score the game-ending ninth run for the Horns.

                                Shockers 1-9(5) Texas

The Shocks had five singles, all mentioned above. Bailey gave up eight earned runs on seven hits and five walks over 4.1 innings.
