    Winthrop Scouting Report:

    Winthrop is 2-2:

    W TROY 80-66 ROAD
    L BRADLEY 61-71 HOME
    W NIAGARA 82-47 HOME
    L STETSON 72-74 HOME

Looks like Winthrop goes about 7-deep:

    5'11" Jr. Guard - Diana Choibekova (#12) - Juco transfer - 20.5 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 34.5 MPG
    5'8" So. Guard - Dequesha McClanahan (#22) - 20.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 34.5 MPG
    5'8" RS Fr. Guard - Samiya Wright (#24) - 10.5 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 29.5 MPG
    6'1" Jr. Forward - Katie Fitzgerald (#21) - 8.3 PPG, 8.0 RPG. 28.8 MPG
    5'7" So. Guard - Tiffany Charles (#5) - 5.5 PPG. 3.8 RPG, 24.5 MPG
    6'0" Sr. Forward - Kaitlyn Rubino (#42) - 6.3 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 21.5 MPG
    6'0" Jr. Forward - Mary Hathaway (#23) - 0.8 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 19.3 MPG

These 7 players have logged 96% of the minutes over Winthrop's 4 games.

#12, #22 and #24 account for 69% of the scoring so far this year. So this appears to be a guard oriented team.

Winthrop shoots 40.6% from the floor (40.0% from behind the arc) and 72.3% from the line.
Winthrop does not turn the ball over a lot averaging 11.5 turnovers per game while forcing 15.3 turnovers per game.

Choibekova (#12) shoots about half her shots from behind the arc and is very good at 23-52 (44.6%) in the 4 games.

McClanahan (#22) doesn't shoot the 3-ball as often or as well (5-17) but she has shot about 1/3rd of Winthrop's free throw attempts on the year hitting a very good 77.3%. So she apparently likes to drive to the basket.

Choibekova (#12) and McClanahan (#22) also appear to be strong rebounders from the guard position.

Wright (#24) has not started a game this year but has the 3rd most minutes and is the 3rd leading scorer. Apparently filling the 6th-woman role.

We have to learn to defend without fouling the shooter for crying out loud. WSU has committed 20 fouls and Winthrop has 28 FT attempts. That's insane.

Also, they seem to be perimeter oriented while WSU is pounding the ball inside yet have 12 FTA vs 28 for the Eagles.

Must play with more intelligence. Shocks up 2 under 6 minutes to go.

Update 67-64 WSU with 3:22 left. Last media timeout.

Watched on Shocker Vision. We have a long way to go. Glad Jaz finished her shots. Too many turnovers, too many times getting beat by the drive. I wonder?

Hard fought win for the Shocks. Winthrop has a pretty nice team. Don't often win when you're outscored by 17 points from the line and outrebounded 44-31. Shocks may have caught a break tonight with Winthrop shooting only 4-23 (17.4%) on their treys. If Winthrop shoots their season average coming in of 40% the Shocks lose this game by double digits.

OTOH, the Shocks were only 1-8 on their treys and are now 2-20 over their last two games. Overall though, the Shocks shot a solid 49% from the field. It is becoming pretty obvious that the Shocks are a poor (maybe even a very poor) perimeter shooting team. Jessica Diamond is about the only perimeter player opponents need to be concerned about at this point. No reason to expect opponents to do anything but zone the Shocks and dare them to win with outside shooting. That's what Winthrop tried to do but the Shocks did a good job getting the ball to Jazimen and Chynna in the middle of the zone. Jessica, Jazimen and Chynna all had very solid games.

Defensively the Shocks trapping press was pretty effective as the Shocks forced 23 turnovers. However, I was not real impressed with the Shocks' defense in the half court. However, Winthrop does have some pretty athletic guards. McClanahan (#22) in particular could get to the hole about anytime she wanted to. However, she almost exclusively went to her right when doing so and the Shocks could not, would not are were instructed not to overplay her to her right a little and try to force her left which she was not very inclined to do. However, she drove to her right the entire game with nary an adustment by any of the players defending her. Coming in you had to know this was McClanahan's game.

The Shocks did have 19 assists and 31 baskets which is good. The did turn the ball over 17 times but I think Alicia turned it over 3 times in the 1st minute of play. They could stand to cut down on some of the careless turnovers.

I was little worried down the stretch with the lineup Jody was going with but it held together just long enough to preserve the win.

As OTWHC said we have a long ways to go. Jazimen and Chynna had very good games tonight, especially Chynna. Jessica also had a good game is about the only one playing consistently well. We need more consistent play out of most of the lineup. Jasmine Jones gives great effort on defense but doesn't bring much to the offensive side of the equation. Haleigh has not got it going yet. Personally, I want to see more and more of Mollie and Alex as the year progresses.

Hard to say where we really are at this point, but I'm not sure a 3rd place MVC finish is in the cards the way we are currently playing. Hopefully, steady improvement is forthcoming.

BTW, don't be fooled by the reported attendance of 1,333. At least 1,000 of that number were disguised as empty seats. Around 300 in actual attendance.

Not sure the Shocks "looked" like the better team tonight, but the scoreboard says they were the better team, even if ever so slightly. This is probably going to be a team that has to ugly it up a little to be successful.

Well said. Lots of work to do before the valley or we'll be in the cellar. After LSU I really thought that game was just the beginning of steady improvement and then a solid team. Hopefully we get back on track.

I'm hoping that the much better non-conference schedule this year will pay dividends once we get into MVC play and, of course, the big prize in the generally one-bid MVC is to make win the MVC Tournament.
