As usual Coach Foster has put together a high quality schedule that will provided plenty of challenges and opportunities for hsi team.

The Shockers are set to play in four fall tournaments. WSU kicks off the season by competing at the Drake Invitational from September 13-15. They head to Oklahoma twice in October and once again in November to take part in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa (Oct. 5-13), the ITA Central Regional Championships in Norman (Oct. 17-22), and the Tulsa Invitational (Nov. 1-3).

The spring schedule features 11 home matches and 15 road matches before heading to Tulsa in mid-April for the AAC Championships. The schedule inlcudes 8 matches against AAC conference foes during the regular season. 6 of those matches are at home: Tulane, SMU, UCF, USF, Houston and Memphis. They play Tulsa and Cincinnati on the road.

The Shocks have 9 matches against P-5 conference teams.

The Lady Shocks opened their fall season this weekend at the Drake Invitational. There are 8 teams in this field. In addition to WSU and host Drake the field includes Creighton, Omaha, South Dakota, UNI, Agustana (D-II) and Upper Iowa (D-II). Obviously not the strongest of fields.

Teams are matched up into two doubles flights and 4 singles flights. As expected the Shockers have been pretty dominate in this field.

The Shockers had 4 doubles teams, with 2 in each flight. Each of the 4 teams have advanced to today's finals where the will face each other. So a Shocker team will win both of the doubles flights.

5 of the 6 players in today's finals for singles flights A, B and C are Shockers. With Shockers vs Shockers in Flights B and C the Shockers are guaranteed they will win both of those flights.

The Shockers entered only 1 player in Flight D of the singles and she lost her 1st match to drop into the consolation side of the bracket.

I suppose this event serves as a warmup for the ITA All-American Championships beginning October 5th in Tulsa.

In the singles flights at Drake the Shockers took 1st and 3rd in flight A, they took 1st, 2nd and 3rd in flight B and they took 1st and 2nd in flight C. So yes the Shockers dominated big time but the field was not strong.

More details can be found here: https://goshockers.com/news/2019/9/1...itational.aspx

The Shockers have added an additioanl fall tournamnet with a significant step up in competition. The Shockers will be heading down to Dallas, Texas to take part in the SMU Fall Invitational from Sept. 27-29 at the SMU Tennis Complex.

The other teams that will be at the invitational include Arkansas, Kansas, Kansas State, South Carolina, Southern Mississippi, and Stephen F. Austin.

Should be more to come as the Shockers have 4 seniors on this year's team. But how many more will be signing this week is hard to say. With so many tennis players coming from overseas they very often are signed or commit during the summer.

The Lady Shocks tennis team benefiting from an unusually high quality volunteer assistant.: RH: Jay Louderback Returns to Wichita State

Former Shokcer Jay Louderback, who retired in 2018 after 29 seasons at Notre Dame, spent most of the fall helping Shocker women's coach Colin Foster. He comes to two or three practices a week and traveled to one fall tournament. Louderback played tennis at Wichita State from 1972-76 and coached the women's program from 1979-86.

Louderback, from Arkansas City, returned to Kansas to be close to family. He and Denise, his wife, took a year to travel to places such as Greece. By this summer, he was ready to be part of a tennis program again.

"I was missing the day-to-day contact with the student-athletes," he said. "Especially being on the court with them. I enjoy the coaching."

Louderback's relationship with Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva is the top example of how all that experience and a positive personality can help. Saidhujaeva, a senior from Uzbekistan, spent most of last spring in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots. This fall, she advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Central Regional Championships and she is on track to play No. 1 singles and doubles in the spring.

Shockers Split First Day of Dual Season

Wichita State women's tennis opened up the season Saturday with a 6-1 win over Abilene Christian before dropping a 6-1 decision to No. 11 Oklahoma State at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.

                              Quotes from the Coach
                              Head Coach Colin Foster
"It was a good way to start our season. Everyone was ready to compete from the first ball and we sustained that level of focus and determination until the end of the second match. We played a pretty clean match against Abilene Christian and went into the Oklahoma State match with belief and fight, but they were just too good today. We're excited that the progress we made in the fall appears to be showing up, and while we've still got a lot of work to do, we've got the talent and the desire to have a lot of success this year."

                              Up Next
The Shockers head up to Lawrence, Kan. for a showdown with No. 19 Kansas at the Jayhawk Tennis Complex on Jan. 19.
