I wonder whether the Kalin injury was factored into this vote or not. Personally, as much as I respect UNI's coach, I'm not convinced that they are the #2 team in the Valley without Kalin.
Missouri State may well be the most talented team in the top 3, but I think they have the weakest coaching. Kalin is not on the preseason All-MVC Team so that would indicate her injury was factored in. The top 3 selections are pretty much as I was expecting. Keep in mind that UNI won the league last year by 5 games. They still have a pretty solid core of experienced players returning including Senior guards K.K. Armstrong, Rachel Madrigal and Katelin Oney. Junior Amber Kirschbaum will replace Lizzie Boeck in the middle where UNI will lose some size but perhaps gain a little athleticism. Junior Mercedees Morgan will probably round out their starting lineup. Not sure what kind of depth UNI will have this year.
The women seem similar to the men this year in that the Top 3 teams seem to be pretty clear cut with everyone else kind of in jumble behind them.
While I think the Shockers are fairly placed in the 3rd spot I also think they have a reasonable shot at being in the mix for the top spot come season end. This is the year for Jody's program to make its move.

I certainly won't write UNI off. They have a very good head coach and still have a lot of talent. However, I think Lizzie Boeck may have been the most underrated player in the Valley last year and Kalin is the reigning POY. They were already losing most of their minutes in the front court and losing Kalin on top of that is a big blow.
Even with the front court loses, with Kalin I might have picked them 1st. As is, I'm picking them 3rd. I couldn't agree more. If Chrystal runs the point like a true Adam's PG, Haleigh dominates as she is capable of, Kelsey finally contributes to help the bigs, we're in the hunt for the title. The new players will help about mid-season and unless Sancho just lights it up from the three she probably will see limited action, a bit slow for this level. Real nice kid, just too slow for Valley ball.Comment

x factor (meaning special talent or quality) = Haleigh Lankster.
Sleeper is difficult to predict but I will go with 6'2" RSFr Kelsey Jacobs if she can stay healthy. come out tomorrow in full force at Shocker Madness. You'll meet the players and get a glimmer of their potential. Just a scrimmage against teammates, but should answer some questions about the newer players.Comment

How tough is Jessica Diamond?
Diamond, from Houston, did not play on WSU's exhibition trip to Italy in August. She underwent surgery on a torn labrum in her left shoulder in April and returned to practice in September.

Not sure the extent of Jessica's injury was but this is an injury that keeps a lot of players out of action. If I remember correctly this is the injury that put Creighton's Nate Funk down for a season and Drake's Seth VanDeest may very well miss this season with a torn labrum injury.
Jessica played most of last season with some kind of brace or protection on her left shoulder. At times she could just take over a game and score at will. I wonder if getting this injury surgically repaired with allow Diamond to shine brightly this year.

Based on Paul Suellentrop's article in today's Eagle Alex Harden, a 5'11" Freshman G/F, could be in the running for the sleeper this year.
"I think Alex has so much untapped potential," Adams said. "She's extremely physical and strong. She's a very good athlete. She's fast. She can jump. There's just so many things there that haven't been tapped into yet. I don't think she even knows how much potential she has."
Adams already is praising her ability to defend, which is notable considering Adams has gained a reputation around the Valley as a defensive mastermind. She said she can "truly trust" Harden to play anywhere from point guard to power forward.

Sheena came to mind also when I read Jody's comments about her defense. However, Alex at 5'11" is 6" taller than Sheena and sounds like she may very well be a very versatile players. Perhaps a Haleigh Lankster on steroids (figuratevely speaking of course). Looking forward to seeing her tonight.Originally posted by mumdaddy316 View Post

If the lady shox can play some defense this year they will be a hand full for a lot of teams,vet guard play and good post play. tryna find a weakness vs strongsuit. Other than depth vs. experience i cant,all in all i hope for a great season!Comment
