  • 2011 USTA/ITA Women's Regional Tennis Championships

With Valerie Brockman winning two matches in the Qualifying Draw on Thursday she joins 6 of her Shocker teammates in the main draw of 64 in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Tulsa this weekend. 17 schools are represented in the tournament.

The tournament is a regional individual championship and is a qualifier for the USTA/ITA National Individual Championship, which is held Nov. 4-7 at the USTA/Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

TULSA, Okla. - Valerie Brockman won two matches in the qualifying draw of the 2011 USTA/ITA Women's Central Region Tennis Championships to advance to the main draw. The annual tournament is taking place from today to Oct. 25 at Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., and is being hosted by the University of Tulsa.

The top 16 players are seeded with the Shockers Lutfiana Budiharto the #5 seed. Lutfiana plays Isaura Enrique (Tulsa) in the 1st round.

Unfortunately for the Shocks 5 of their players are up against seeded players in the 1st round.

Lucia Kovalova plays #1 seed Natalia Pintusava (Minnesota)
Valerie Brockman plays #2 seed Sonja Molnar (Iowa)
Monstse Blasco-Fernandez plays #6 seed Madeleine Geibert (Nebraska)
Carla Venticinque plays #12 seed Cluadine Paulson (Arkansas)
Veronika Blaskova plays #15 seed Patricia Versova (Nebraska)

Delia Damaschin is the only Shocker playing in a match that does not involve a seeded player. She takes on Maria Sant'Anna (Tulsa).

NCAA tennis is clearly a global sport which is OK. I suppose that says a lot about the status of tennis in the heirarchy of sports in the U.S. Makes recruiting a much different animal than most NCAA sports.

The Shocks also have 3 teams in the doubles competition:

Budiharto/Venticique received a 1st round bye and face Veresova/Weatherhold (Nebraska) in the 2nd round.
Blaskova/Kovalova received a 1st round bye and face Nalepa/Moreno (St. Louis) who also received a 1st round bye.
    Damaschin/Fernadez face Umanets/Muravnik in a 1st round match.

The tough draws made it a tough day for the Lady Shocks and to top it off #5 Lutfiana was upset in her match.

TULSA, Okla. - Wichita State won two matches on the first day of the 2011 USTA/ITA Women's Central Region championship in Tulsa, Okla. Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova knocked off St. Louis to advance and Delia Damaschin won her first singles match before falling in the second round.
