  • Shockers @ Red & White Classic (Schedule Change)

The Shocker softball team was initially planned to travel to Carbondale, IL this weekend for the Coach B Classic. When I first saw that on the schedule I thought why are they going to Carbondale on March 1st which is about at the same latitude as Wichita. Most early season tournaments are played quite a bit further south. SIU has moved their tournament to Chattanooga, TN but apparently the Shocks opted to back out and play this weekend at the Red & White Classic in Houston hosted by Texas Southern. Weather in Chattanooga is in the 50's this weekend but with a 100% chance of rain on Sunday. Houston will be around 70 this weekend with an 80% chance of thunderstorms on Sunday Morning. So Sunday's schedule will be at risk or subject to revision.

The schedule in Houston is as follows:

    Weekend Schedule
    Saturday, March 2
Wichita State vs. Texas Southern - 9 a.m.
Wichita State vs. Texas State - 11:30 a.m.

    Sunday, March 3
    Wichita State vs. DePaul - 9 a.m.
Wichita State vs. Texas Southern - 11:30 a.m.

The Wichita State softball team continues its non-conference road trip, starting March with two games against Texas Southern while facing DePaul and Texas State in the Red & White Showcase.

The Shocks pick up a pair of shut-out wins in Houston today winning 11-0 over Texas Southern in a 6-inning run-rule game and defeating Texast State 3-0.

In the 1st game against Texas Southern Erin McDonald picked up the won going the distance allowing only a 1-out single in the 4th. She struck out 6, walked 3 and hit a batter so she did have a handful of base runners. The Shocks did play error free ball which always help a pitcher.

The Shocks only lead 3-0 after 5 innings but closed the game out with an 8 run 6th inning which include 9 hits including home runs by Ryleigh Buck and Laurie Derrico. Laurie's 6th inning home run came with 2 runners on base and along with a 2-run homer in the 3rd inning gave Laurie 5 runs batted in.

In the 2nd game against Texas State Caitlyn Bingham went the distance allowing only 3 singles and 3 walks while striking out 6. Both teams played errorless ball in this and all 11 hits in the game (8 by the Shockers) were singles. No extra base hits.

A sac fly by Neleigh Herring and an RBI single by Bailee Nickerson plated 2 runs for the Shocks in the top of the 1st. The bats pretty much went silent until the 5th when 2 singles and a walk loaded the bases with 1 out for the Shocks with Laurie and Butters Perrigan due up. However, both Laurie and Butters struck out. The Shocks added an insurance run in the 6th when Baille Nickerson reached on a 1 out single. Kasidee pinch ran for Bailee and, after Ryleigh flied out to left for the 2nd out, stole second base. Asea Webber then singled to left to score Kasidee.

    Bailey Lange still MIA.

Shocks playing a DePaul team that was 15-1 before dropping 2 games to Texas State (0-3) and Houston (0-8) yesterday. They also beat Houston 2-0 on Friday.

Both sides kind of mucked up things in the first. DePaul scored 1 on 1 hit and left the bases loaded, but the Shocks answered with 2, again on only 1 hit (a Ryleigh Buck single to the pitcher) and an error combined with HBP and walks to make it 2-1 after 1. No Bailey Lange again. Stats are frozen again. Twitter is the only place for updates right now.

Caitlin Bingham in the circle for the Shocks and gets a much cleaner 2nd...bottom 2, still 2-1 Shocks.

2 quick outs and then a Derrico bomb make it 3-1 Shocks!

After the home run, 2 walks and an error make it 4-1 Shocks after 2.

My live stats seem to have locked up or are not being updated. Maybe a weather delay?

In the 3rd DePaul scored on a 1out double and a 2 out single. The Shocks answered in the bottom half with Asea Webber's lead off triple leading to a run.

        Shocks up 5-2 after 3.

Shocks add a run in the 5th on a 3 put single by Laurie Derrico followed by an RBI double from Butters Perrigan extending g their lead to 6-2.

Live stats now defaulting to the next game. Assuming (always a dicey action) the Shocks closed out the victory as they only needed 3 outs in the top of the 7th. No update from either team's twitter feed or website yet.

Radar looks very clean so I don't think there are any delays that would have affected game 1 or the upcoming one either.

Go Shockers Twitter feed just updated the final, 6-2 Shockers.

Shocks take care of Texas State 8-1 in there final game of the weekend.

Hailey Martinez went the distance in perhaps her best outing as Shock. Looks like Asea Webber's was the offensive player of the game going 3 for 3 plus gettting hit by a pitch. Her 3-run home run in the top of the 6th put the game in the deep freeze where most of us in Wichita already were.

Wichita State heads into its home opener on Wednesday riding a five-game winning streak after defeating DePaul and Texas Southern in the doubleheader of Red & White Showcase on Sunday.

Bingham, Derrico Named to Conference Honor Roll

Caitlin Bingham and Laurie Derrico were named to the conference's honor roll this past week after leading the Shockers to a 4-0 record at the Red & White Showcase.

Bingham came up with her eighth and ninth wins of the season, while adding her fifth complete game against Texas State. The Tecumseh, Okla., native allowed only one earned run and racked up 12 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched.

Derrico hit .428 on the weekend, delivering her first three home runs of the season and driving in six RBIs. The Sterling, Okla., native also added two stolen bases in addition to collecting six hits.

Caitlyn has been very solid this year although the level of competition has not be the strongest.

Good to see Laurie to finally get her power stroke going this past weekend.
