Missouri State 60-63(OT) Shockers
A long-range three by Carla Bremaud with 3.7 seconds left sent the game to overtime where the Shocks prevailed. This was 300th D-I win for HCKA.
Both teams shot well to begin the first quarter. The Shocks opened in a 2-3 zone, had problems rebounding, changed to a man and then changed back to the zone. Shockers led 17-15 at the quarter.
Some of the back part of the rotation played much of the first half of the second quarter. Their zone was much more active, and the Bears first score of the quarter came about the 3:30 mark. The Shockers did not score much themselves, but led 27-21 at the half.
In the second half, the Bears began using a 2-3 zone with the top of the zone picking up the Shocker point guard pretty high. The Shocker lead became 40-30 with about 2:30 to play in the quarter, but Missouri State managed to close the gap to 42-38 by the end of the quarter.
The free throw line was open for someone to fill against the Bear zone, but the Shocks did not try that. Rather Seraphin or Ashley would penetrate to that spot and then kick the ball out. Missouri State took their first lead at 47-46 with a bit less than three minutes to play. At 52-50 and twenty seconds to play, the Bears made one of two free throws, setting the stage for Carla's long range bomb.
The Bears led early in the OT but the Shocks pulled ahead with about two or so minutes to play - 3 of 6 free throws by Ashley and a nice pull-up by Seraphine at the free-throw line when she penetrated were a big part of that - and held on for the win.
The Shocks were 4 of 16 on three-balls for .250, but the Bears were worse at 4 of 26. The Shocks were 47.7% for the game and the Bears were 29.0%. The Shocker rebounding improved and closed the gap to 36 and 38.
Carla with 15, Sabrina with 13 and Raven with 12 despite being 4 of 9 from the line. She was the leading rebounder with 12. Seraphine had 8 and it seemed could look for her shot a little more when she penetrates rather than mostly looking to pass.
Clearly still a work in progress, but a nice win.
