  • Shocker SB at USF

The Shockers conclude regular-season conference play this weekend, traveling to Tampa to play USF. The Friday game starts at 530pm, the Saturday game at 4pm and the Sunday game at noon, all CT.

The Bulls are the preseason pick for third among the eight schools playing softball in the AAC with their current RPI being second among the AAC schools. Their record to this point is 34-19 and is 1-6 against teams that are at least RV in the Coaches’ Poll. One of the losses was to Oklahoma State in February. In conference play their record is 12-6 with a sweep of UConn, winning two against Memphis, Houston and Tulsa, one against ECU and two against UCF.

Using conference stats only, the offense of USF is led by Astin Donovan with an OPS of 1.075. Brooke Hartman (five homers), Macy Cook, Lindsey Devitt and Lauren Evans all have an OPS above .800.

The two starters for the Bulls are Georgina Corrick (ERA of 1.54 and WHIP of 0.95) and Cheyenne Eggens (2.46 and 1.21). Hannah Parker is the primary reliever other than the two starters.

The record for the Shockers is now 29-18 with an 11-7 record in conference.

In conference, Mackenzie has an OPS of 1.316. Others above 1.000 are Ryleigh (1.133 with five homers) and Madison at 1.019. Laurie, despite a slump over the last two weekends, is at .961 with six homers, Bailey is at .925 and Bailee is at .909.

Bailey has an ERA of 3.06 with a WHIP of 1.40 with Caitlin at 4.78 and 1.48. BaileyK’s numbers in conference are 1.81 and 1.40.

As noted elsewhere, two wins and the Shockers will be the #1 seed in the AAC Tournament to be hosted by USF. Anything else and the seed will depend on other conference results this weekend.

The Shockers will be the #1 seed if neither Memphis or Houston, who play each other this weekend, sweep. However, the way I interpret the standings is if the Shocks win two and either Memphis or Houston sweep there will be a 3-way tie for 1st.

Regardless of whether the 3rd team is Houston or Memphis each of the 3 teams would be 3-3 among the 3 teams tied for 1st which is the 1st tiebreaker for seeding.

At that point you go down the standings comparing each team's record versus the team occupying the highest position in the standings, continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.

With the standings so compressed that is really tough to figure out at this point as it is an all depends situation.

Best scenario for the Shocks would be to sweep USF and own the regular season title and #1 seed outright.

2nd best scenario for the Shocks would be win the USF series 2-1 and hope for a split between Houston and Memphis and the Shocks get a co-championship and a #1 seed with the first tiebreaker..

Clearly, elsewhere was my vivid, though faulty, imagination.

BaileyL in the circle for the Shocks. Georgina Corrick for the Bulls.

Baliey stakes herself to a very early 1-0 lead with a solo homer to right on an 0-2 count in the top of the 2nd.

The Shocks expand the lead to 2-0 in the 5th on a RBI single by Asea Webber.

In the bottom of the 6th USF put 2 on with 1 out but BaileyL got a fly to RF and a strike out to escape without any damage.

Game 1 goes to the Shocks 2-0. No doubt about the player of the game in this one. BaileyL with a 4-hit shut out and a solo homer.

With 2 games to play the Shockers have moved into a tie for 1st with USF at 12-7.

Houston beat Memphis tonight 4-1 to move into sole possession of 3rd 1 game back at 11-8.

Memphis falls into a tie for 4th with UCF at 10-9 two games back.

The worst the Shocks can do is a tie for 3rd. One more win clinches a co-championship. Two wins would win the AAC outright.

USF starting Cheyenne Eggens (2.46 ERA/1.21 WHIP) in the circle. In more than a bit of a surprise live stats is showing Freshman Macknzie Webber will be staring in the circle of the Shocks. Mackenize has only pitched a total of 14.0 innings this year in 9 appearances.

An error by Laurie at SS, a walk and a sac bunt put runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out for USF in the bottom of the 1st. With 2 outs a softly hit ball just past? Mackenzie at 3rd (looked like she dieflected it into left field ruled a single (I thought it was an error on Mackenzie) and both runners score. USF up 2-0.

                Not Webber's fault IMO.

USF tacks on 3 more in the 2nd and these are mostly on Webber and Caitlyn Bingham comes in to a runner on 2nd and 2 outs in the 2nd.

I don't really fault Mckenzie Webber. She should never have been in there to begin with. Not sure what the coaching staff was thinking.about.

If the Shocks are going to do it today they are going to do it the hard way trailing 0-5 after 2 innings.

A walk and 2 wild pitches put a USF runner on 3rd with not outs in the 4th. After a 5-3 ground out Caitlyn throws another pitch in the dirt that Madison blocks but HCKB apparentnly had seen enough pitches in the dirt and at that point brought in Bailey Klitzke who was able to strand the runner at 3rd.

Laurie Derrico put the Shocks on the board with a solo homer to left center in the 6th.to make it 1-5.

USF matches that run with a solo home run of their onw in the bottom of the 6th to make it 6-1.

Shocks go down in order in the 7th.

                Final: USF 6 - WSU 1

I would like to say I totally understand why the Shocks started Mckenzie Webber in this game. But then I would be a dirty rotten liar.

                  With 1 game to play:

USF moves back into sole possession of 1st and clinches a co-championship. Can win it outright with a win over the Shocks tomorrow.

WSU falls into a 2nd place tie with Houston a 7-4 winner over Memphis today. If both the Shocks and Cougars win tomorrow they will tie USF for 1st.

The possibilities for the Shocks are a co-championship or a tri-championship with a win or, if they lose a tie for 2nd, 3rd place or a tie for 3rd place.

Shocks at USF is in a weather delay with USF leading 2-1 with 2 outs and a USF runner on 1st in the bottom of the 3rd.

Houston completed a sweep of Memphis today. A Shocker win will result in a 3-way tie for the AAC regular season title and a #1 seed for the Shocks (I think) by virtue of their sweep fo 4th place UCF in that ciicumstance..

A Shocker loss will result in a AAC championship for USF, 2nd place for Houston and a tie for 3rd between the Shocks and UCF. The Shocks would be the #3 seed as the hold the head-to-head tiebreaker vs UCF.

If the game is wiped out I assume USF will be the regular season champs, Houston will be 2nd, the Shocks 3rd and UCF 4th.

Memphis and Tulsa are tied for 5th. Memphis would be the 5 seed. Tusla will be the 6 seed.

ECU is 7th and UConn is 8th.

Coming out of the delay Asea Webber with a very good play in CF saves a run and ends the 3rd.

Shocks threatened in the top of the 6th. Bailey Lange was on 1st after a 1-out single to left. With 2 outs Ryleigh Buck drove the ball deep to right center by the USF RF made a nice running catch to end the Shokcer at bat.

USF addes an unearned run in the bottom of the 6th. After a lead off single Madison Perrigan threw the sac bunt attempt wildly down the RF line with the USF runner scoring all the way from 1st base to make it 3 - 1 after 6.

Shocks went down in order in the 7th.

USF Fr. Georgina Corrick was very good in the circle. She has good stuff and very good command and when the ump is giving her extra space on both sides of the plate she is really tough. Give her credit though, she was good enough to take advantage of the home plate umpires strike zone.

USF wins the regular season title. Houston moves into 2nd. The Shocks and UCF tie for 3rd. The Shocks I believe will be the #3 seed in the AAC Tournament also held at USF.

the Shocks will play Tulsa in the opening round of the AAC Tournament on Thursday.
