  • Mizzou Cancels Mid-Week Softball Doubleheader

The Tigers have exercised the provision to "buy-out" the contractual agreement for the two scheduled games in Wichita to pick up home games against Arkansas - Pine Bluff this weekend.

    http://goshockers.com/news/2018/4/27...wednesday.aspx

Not sure I recall that happening previously although it may have.

i guess the Lady Tigers didn't like the way softballs have been flying our of the park off of Shocker bats lately. 12 home runs resulting in 24 runs in their last 4 games at home (and not exactly in ideal hitting conditions -- OSU and UCF combined to hit 1 solo home run in those 4 games).

Moves like that should be cause for immediate expulsion from the NCAA tournament unless you win your conference tourney. No excuse for crap like that. Before the season starts? No problem.

Any guess on what the amount of the buyout provision was? I'm thinking it was probably around $5k.

Wow. That's super lame. I agree that there needs to be some level of accountability for this kind of crap.

Apparently they had the contractual right to do it but to wait until essentially the last minute is lame. I imagine Mizzou pretty much dictated that if you want to schedule these games you have to accept our terms although I doubt if WSU thought they would pull something like this.

Such bush league crap here. They're 26-24 with 3 games against Florida to wrap up the season. They don't want to lose two to the Shox then get swept by #5 Florida to finish the regular season at 26-29. So they get rid of us and schedule a 15-25 Arkansas Pine Bluff squad to get them to 28-24 that will guarantee them a game over .500 regular season finish.

Sounds like a very reasonable and perhaps highly probable supposition.

Hello, Mizzou fan here. We were actually down a game due to bad weather a couple weeks ago so there was talk that we would be playing UAPB for a single game this weekend. I think those talks progressed and then we opted to use the buy-out. We probably didn't really need to do that since the forecast does not look very good for Wednesday in Wichita. But yeah, this move was mostly done to get a competitive advantage by playing a lesser opponent and staying above .500 so that we can make it to a 12th straight NCAA Regional.

I can't really disagree with many of the takes on this board necessarily. You have to do what you have to do. And evidently the game could still be bought out at this late date so they did it.

Sounds like something KU would do. Very Chicken$hit.

So in order to make a 12th straight regional, you had to buy out of games against like competition.

        Makes sense to me.

        ... No really, deuces.

It really does make sense if the NCAA rewards them for it, which I imagine will happen. That's not Mizzou's fault, that's the NCAA's fault.

The only true-ish justice here is for UAPB to sweep them and knock them out.

Well said. I think we are a bubble NCAA team even in the best case scenario.

For the record, despite it potentially being in Mizzou's best interest, it still makes them certified chicken-shits.

That's probably fair. I would have played the games. And like I had stated earlier, they would probably have been rained out anyhow. Doing this now, allows MU the opportunity to play a second game against UAPB and that is likely the reason they went ahead.

It was a somewhat controversial move on Mizzou forums yesterday when the move was made. I was very curious how the Wichita State release would read when it came out: would it be worded like a mutual decision or not. And then clearly not.

I wish nothing but the best for Coach Bredbenner and your team. You guys have had a good season.

You're the nicest and most sensible Mizzou fan I've ever encountered. I'm giving you my endorsement to come by and talk soup anytime sir.

I'm sorry, but Mizzou did what was in their best interests, and it hard to blame them for that. As someone mentioned, this is mostly (entirely?) a decision driven by NCAA-tournament-selection parameters. If the positions were reversed, ... I'm not sure what we would do.

i can give Mizzou the pass IF the primary reason they cancelled was the weather forecast which right now is not very promising for Wednesday. If Mizzou believes it is importnat to get another game in instead of having two games wiped out to the weather than I can understand that. If we are going to lose these games I sure as hell hope we get some good rain Wednesday because we could reallly use it.

A little late on this, but here's a story with quotes from Bredbenner on Missouri's decision to buy out the doubleheader.

The fact that they didn't feel 100% comfortable playing 2 games against us tells our girls that we're a competitive team and even the big dogs in the Power 5 schools aren't confident they can come in and beat us.
