  • Shocker SB at ECU

The Shockers continue conference play this weekend, traveling to Greenville, NC, for three games against Eastern Carolina. Single games are at 5pm Friday, 1pm Saturday and 11am Sunday, all times CT. (This according to the ECU site; the Shocker site has the Sunday game an hour earlier.)

The Pirates are a preseason pick for last among the eight schools playing softball in the AAC with their current RPI being seventh among the AAC schools. Their record to this point is 22-26 and is 3-2 against teams that are at least RV in the Coaches’ Poll. In conference play their record is 7-8 with a win over Houston, being swept by Tulsa, a win over Memphis, sweeping UConn and two wins over first-place USF this past weekend. This may be a team that is starting to come together at the right time.

As before, the stats for both teams reflect conference only.

Meredith Burroughs is the only Pirate player with an OPS above .900 at .907. She has five homers in conference play. Ashleigh Inae and Alex Mycek are at an even .800.

The starts for ECU are split between Whitney Sanford and Erin Poepping. Sanford has an ERA of 3.61 and a WHIP of 1.28 with the numbers of Poepping being 3.87 and 1.45.

The record for the Shockers is now 28-17 with a 9-6 record in conference.

Mackenzie (reigning Player of the Week) continues her tear in conference. Her OPS is now 1.412. She is followed by Ryleigh (1.351 and five homers) and Laurie (1.059 and six homers). Madison, Bailey, Bailee and Asea are all above .900.

Bailey (reigning Pitcher of the Week) has lowered her ERA to 3.82 and WHIP to 1.57. Caitlin is at 4.14 and 1.42. BaileyK’s numbers in relief are 1.65 and 1.29.

      Shocker Series Notes

The hour discrepancy in start time between WSU's info and ECU's info is still there.

Shows the games are on Pirates All-Acess ($) which would indicate a subscription required. However, IIRC correctly I think the Shocker baseball games vs ECU were all available on this network without charge.

The Pirates have found form in the past week, handing American Athletic Conference leaders USF their first series loss of the season last weekend and following it up with a 2-1 victory over in-state rival North Carolina State midweek; winning on a walk-off RBI single. Sporting a 22-26 record, 7-8 in conference play, ECU still have a chance of climbing The American with six games left but must take a series win over the Shockers this weekend to have a realistic shot.

Goofy things still happen with the new system. Occasionally I get the Volleyball Forum marked as having new posts, but there is nothing new there. It will stay that way as long as a week, and then clears itself.

Shocks take the opening game of the series from ECU by a 5-1 score.

Bailey Lange improved to 16-10 on the year going the distance. She allowed 8 singles and stranded 8 runners on base. She helped herself out by not walking anyone, although she did hit 1 batter, and striking out 7. 4 of ECU's 8 singles came in the 6th innning. A lead off singled was eased by a 6-4-3 double play. 3 more singles produced ECU's lone run before a strke out ended the inning.

The Shocker offense was the recipient of 6 walks and 4 hit batters but only managed 6 hits resulting in 12 runners left on base.

Mackenzie Wright continued her hot hitting in AAC play gong 2-4 plus a walk including a 2-run homer and another RBI on a bases loaded walk. Madison Perrigan also had 2 hits ad a walk in 4 at bats.

Good way to start the series but hope the Shocks do a bit better cashing in on their scoring opportunities in the next 2 games.

The Shocks are now in sole possession of 2nd place 1 game behind USF but the standings, with the exception of UConn, are pretty tightly bunched.

            Game Two

The secondary pitching for the Shockers has yet to appear. Caitlin started and was pulled in the second for BaileyK. She has been pulled in the fourth for Mackenzie with the Shocks trailing 5-0. The Shocks have only two singles off Poepping through their four innings.

ECU leads 5-0 after four complete.

Erin Poepping totally quieted the Shocker bats today allowing only 3 singles, 2 by Ballee Nickerson. Shocks lose 5-0. The Shocks were pretty much never in this one. Need to bounce back and take the rubber game tomorrow.

After that performance, will the Shockers see Poepping again tomorrow?

              Game Three

Poepping did get the start for the Pirates, and Bailey was in the circle for the Shockers.

The Shocks put up a three-spot in the first: single by Asea, double by Laurie, RBI single by Ryleigh, RBI single by Bailee, sac fly by Madison.

ECU got a run back in the second on a double and single.

The Shockers closed out the scoring in the sixth when Bailey's single was followed by a two-run blast by Madison.

              Shockers 5-1 ECU

Bailey gave up the one earned run on seven hits and a walk with no! strikeouts.

Ryleigh had two singles, Laurie the double and Madison the home run and three RBI. The Shockers had eight hits total.

The series win over ECU allows the Shocks to hold on to sole possession of 2nd place at 11-7. They trail league leader USF (12-6) and take on the Lady Bulls next weekend in Tampa in the final weekend of the regular season.

The Shocks have a 1 game lead over Memphis and Houston, 2 game lead over UCF and a 3 game lead over Tulsa and ECU.

ECU is at UCF next weekend. UConn is at Tulsa. Memphis is at Houston.

You can see some of the highlights form today's game on Shocker Softball Twitter page.

The play of the game may very well have come in the bottom of the 2nd. With the Shocks leading 3-1, ECU loaded the bases with 2 outs and then this:

Sully must have liked this highlight play at 3rd since the title of his latest RH tome is: RH: Wright Loves the Highlight Play at Third

Another really good article by Paul which I thnk him for. Interesting look at Mackenzie's growing up as a softball player and developing as a person,.
