  • Shocker SB at Nebraska

The Shockers continue their season with three games in Lincoln against Nebraska, a DH on Saturday and a single game on Sunday with a 1pm start time on both days. The Huskers are currently RV in the NFCA poll at 31.

Nebraska are a member of the Big 10 Conference, again a conference not into pre-season team picks or player picks. Pitcher Kaylan Jablonski and outfielder Alyvia Simmons were members of the All-Big Ten second team last year.

The Huskers are 10-5 so far this year. They opened their season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, a long-standing tournament with decent competition. They were 5-1, including being 2-1 against teams ranked at the time, all #15 or below. They then were 3-1 in their version of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge. This past weekend, they were 2-3 at the Mary Nutter Classic, another well regarded tournament that has been played for a number of years. There Nebraska was 1-2 against ranked teams, all #6 or higher, plus a loss to an RV team.

Jablonski (OPS of 1.117) and Tristen Edwards (.996) lead the offense. Both have a team-leading three homers. Edwards has been Player of the Week and Co-Player of the Week in the Big 10 already this year.

Olivia Ferrell and Jablonski are the mainstays of the pitching staff, pitching 85% of the innings. Ferrell has an ERA of 2.12 and a WHIP of 1.38 with Jablonski’s numbers at 3.11 and 1.42.

The sets of numbers for the offense and defense may not jump out at you, but they have played seven of their fifteen games against ranked teams including the one RV team.

The record for the Shockers is 7-7. The pitching is probably performing as expected (not great, but understandable given its youth), but the offense is woeful.

Bailey’s ERA is now 4.09 with a WHIP of 1.30, while Caitlin, second on the IP list, is 6.18 and 1.94. Hailey in limited innings has an ERA of 1.20 and a WHIP of 1.37.

Ryleigh has the highest OPS at .933. Bailee at .821 is next, and no one else is above 0.700. (Paige is omitted from this list as she has played only five games and appears to be out with an injury.)

Right now the weather looks decent to get these games in. Temps right around 50 both days but a little breezy. A small chance or a rain shower sometime Sunday currently in the forecast.

I don't think I will have the chance to "see" any of these games, maybe some of Sunday's. Probably means they will play much better.

        Game One

        Shockers 6-2 Nebraska

Bailey has the start, and Paige is back in the lineup in right field with Caitlin as the DP. Jablonski is the starter for Nebraska.

The Huskers scored two unearned runs in the second a triple, infield error that did not score anyone and a two-out, two-RBI single.

The Shockers answered in the top of the third with four runs to take the lead. Mackenzie led off with a walk and stole second after two were out. Paige scored her with a single and after another single by Caitlin, Madison unloaded a three-run shot. Asea, Bailee and Bailey loaded the bases with single, but Mackenzie flew out to end the inning.

The Shocks added another run in the fourth to move the lead to 5-2. Single by Ryleigh, sac bunt by Laurie and a single by Paige.

They added their final run in the sixth on a singles by Laurie and Paige, sac bunt by Cailtin and a single by Madison to score just one.

The Shockers had twelve hits including a homer and single by Madison for four RBI and three singles by Paige for two RBI.

Bailey gave up two unearned runs on six hits and no walks. She had nine strikeouts. It is good to see that last weekend was an apparent aberration for Bailey.

          Game Two

          Shockers 1-3 Nebraska

Caitlin has the start in this one with Bailey as the DP. Olivia Ferrell has the start for the Huskers.

In the first with one out, Ryleigh singled and Laurie doubled, but no one could bring them home.

Nebraska threatened in the third with a single, stolen base and another single, but Asea threw out the runner at home.

Laurie led off the Shocker fourth with a homer.

The Huskers plated three runs in their half of the inning, only one of which was earned. Walk, error, single, single, fielder's choice/error, groundout. An ugly half-inning.

Laurie and Paige singled in the Shocker sixth before Caitlin lined into a DP.

Laurie had a homer, double and single with her solo shot being the only Shocker run. Paige had two singles.

Caitlin deserved better. She pitched four innings with only one of the three runs allowed being earned. She gave up four hits and a walk.
Hailey pitched the last two innings, giving up three hits. She had three strikeouts.

Of the five Nebraska runs today, only one was earned.

The Web site writeup claims this was a 230-yard home run! Wowser!!

Shocks defense let them down in key situations today. The pitching was solid. Got the big hits in Game 1 but not able to duplicate that in Game 2.

                Game Three

Bailey has the start for the Shocks, and Olivia Ferrell for the the Huskers - the best starters from yesterday. Caitlin is the DP.

The Shockers struck for a run in the first. A single by Mackenzie, sac bunt by Ryleigh and infield single by Laurie set the table for an RBI double by Paige to score one. Caitlin fouled out to right, and Laurie was thrown out at the plate trying to score for an inning-ending DP.

Shocks with a big crooked number in the 3rd to take a 6-0 lead.

Another Shocker error (throwing by Mackenzie) puts a Husker on second in the second. A single moves her to third, but Madison ends the inning by the throwing out the runner at second on an attempted steal.

The Shocks score more in the third. A single by Mackenzie, stolen base, sac bunt, and walks to Paige and Caitlin load the bases with two outs. Madison triples to clear the bases, and Asea follows with a two-run homer, making the score 6-0 after three.

The Huskers bring on one of their secondary pitchers to start the fourth.

Madison doing a good job driving in runs this weekend. Good to see.

The Shockers get two more in the fifth to move the score to 8-0, runs-ahead rule territory. Caitlin walked, Madison singled and Asea move them along with a sac bunt. Bailey singled with two outs to bring the two runs home.

Bailey retired the side in order in the bottom half on three groundouts to end the game.

                    Shockers 8-0(5) Nebraska

Bailey had another strong outing, giving up just two hits and no walks while getting three strikeouts in pitching the shutout.

Madison (triple), Asea (home run and double) and Mackenzie each had two hits among the nine by the Shocks. Madison had three RBI, and Asea and Bailey each had two.

This was a pretty complete weekend for the Shockers despite the one loss. Bailey had two outstanding outings, giving up no earned runs on the weekend.

And the offense that we thought was there finally came to life. The OPS numbers will not be very pretty yet, but they will move in the right direction.

The Shockers will host Arkansas on Tuesday with the DH starting at 3pm.
