The Shockers continue their season with three games in Lincoln against Nebraska, a DH on Saturday and a single game on Sunday with a 1pm start time on both days. The Huskers are currently RV in the NFCA poll at 31.
Nebraska are a member of the Big 10 Conference, again a conference not into pre-season team picks or player picks. Pitcher Kaylan Jablonski and outfielder Alyvia Simmons were members of the All-Big Ten second team last year.
The Huskers are 10-5 so far this year. They opened their season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, a long-standing tournament with decent competition. They were 5-1, including being 2-1 against teams ranked at the time, all #15 or below. They then were 3-1 in their version of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge. This past weekend, they were 2-3 at the Mary Nutter Classic, another well regarded tournament that has been played for a number of years. There Nebraska was 1-2 against ranked teams, all #6 or higher, plus a loss to an RV team.
Jablonski (OPS of 1.117) and Tristen Edwards (.996) lead the offense. Both have a team-leading three homers. Edwards has been Player of the Week and Co-Player of the Week in the Big 10 already this year.
Olivia Ferrell and Jablonski are the mainstays of the pitching staff, pitching 85% of the innings. Ferrell has an ERA of 2.12 and a WHIP of 1.38 with Jablonski’s numbers at 3.11 and 1.42.
The sets of numbers for the offense and defense may not jump out at you, but they have played seven of their fifteen games against ranked teams including the one RV team.
The record for the Shockers is 7-7. The pitching is probably performing as expected (not great, but understandable given its youth), but the offense is woeful.
Bailey’s ERA is now 4.09 with a WHIP of 1.30, while Caitlin, second on the IP list, is 6.18 and 1.94. Hailey in limited innings has an ERA of 1.20 and a WHIP of 1.37.
Ryleigh has the highest OPS at .933. Bailee at .821 is next, and no one else is above 0.700. (Paige is omitted from this list as she has played only five games and appears to be out with an injury.)
