  • Shocker SB at Texas Invitational

The Shockers travel to Texas again this weekend, this time to compete in the Texas Invitational, their third tournament of the 2018 season.

The Shocks play #21 Ohio State at 200pm on Friday and play host Texas later that evening with a 730pm scheduled start time.

The opponents Saturday are #20 Michigan with a 1200pm start and Ohio State again at 800pm.

The Shockers close out their tournament with a game against Virginia Tech at 1100am on Sunday.

#21 Ohio State are a member of the Big 10 Conference, a conference not into pre-season team picks or player picks. Shortstop Lilli Piper is one of the fifty players on the Player of the Year watch list. Both Piper and second baseman Emily Clark were First Team All-Big Ten selections last year.

The Buckeyes are 8-1, winning five games at a tournament hosted by Florida Atlantic and were 3-1 this past weekend in the Big 10/ACC Challenge. (A Big 10 team, an ACC team and a third team play a double round-robin at an ACC school.) Three times they rallied in the seventh to send a game into extras at the Challenge, winning two of those games. Feasting on the pitching at the first tournament, they have five players with an OPS greater than 1.00. Morgan Ray and Shelby McCombs share the circle.

Texas are picked to finish third of the seven teams playing softball in the Big 12 Conference. Taylor Ellsworth is a returning First Team All-Big 12 catcher.

The Longhorns opened their season by going 2-2 in a tournament they hosted and 2-2 at Puerto Vallarta. There they lost to two ranked teams but defeated Houston, a member of the AAC. Janae Jefferson has an OPS over 1.30, but no one else is challenging 1.00. Paige von Sprecken has the best pitching stats with Erica Wright close behind in innings pitched. Texas is scheduled to play Washington on Wednesday. The Huskies must be on the quarter system - they run-ruled Lamar (Beaumont, TX) twice on Monday and appear to be on an extended road trip.

#20 Michigan are also members of the Big 10 Conference. Utility player Tera Blanco and second baseman Faith Canfield were First Team All-Big Ten selections last year.

The Wolverines are 5-4. They were 3-2 in a tournament hosted by South Florida, another AAC member, their losses being to #2 Florida and USF. They were then 2-2 in their flavor of the Big 10/ACC Challenge. Blanco and Canfield are the two players with an OPS near 1.00 (a little above and just below). Meghan Beaubien has over half of their innings and a WHIP well below 1.00.

Virginia Tech are picked seventh of twelve teams in the ACC. Outfielder Breanna Davenport was a member of the All-ACC Second Team last year.

The Hokies are 6-2, going 4-0 in their instance of the Big 10/ACC Challenge last weekend. They have four players with an OPS above 1.00 or just below. Jordan Dail and Carrie Eberle are their principal pitchers.

For the Shockers, Ryleigh has the highest OPS at .994. Bailey has a WHIP of 1.11 and has pitched sixty percent of the innings.

    BTW, Washington is now #1.

Washington 2-1 Texas - again, a Wednesday game and not part of the tournament.

Rain has cancelled the first game (Ohio State v Virginia Tech) of the Texas Invitational and adjusted the remainder of Friday's schedule.

The Shockers are now scheduled to play Ohio State at 330pm and Texas at 8pm.

In the first, Mackenzie leads off with a walk and advances to second on a wild pitch with no outs, but no one can bring her home. Twenty-five pitches for Ray! Mackenzie walked on a 3-1 count and every other batter reached a 3-2 count.

Ohio State starts in a similar fashion: single, wild pitch. But Caitlin also escapes: ground out, strike out, ground out.

          No score after one.

The Shockers load the bases in the second with no outs: Caitlin reaches on an error, Madison doubles and McKenzie walks. A wild pitch then scores the only run of the inning. Over fifty pitches for Ray, the Buckeyes pitcher.

Three up, three down in the Ohio State second with two strikeouts by Caitlin.

            Shocks lead 1-0 after two.

After Ryleigh leads off the third with a walk, the Buckeyes bring in McCombs to pitch. A two-base error by the centerfielder on Asea's fly ball sends Ryleigh to third where she scores on a sac fly by Laurie. A single by Caitlin scores Asea for the second run of the inning.

An infield single but no runs for Ohio State.

              3-0 after three.

The Buckeyes come back in the fourth. A single and home run scores two runs. Another runner reaches third, but Caitlin gets a strikeout to end the inning.

Shocks still lead after four, 3-2.

In the fifth, Ryleigh leads off with a single, but Asea follows with a ground ball DP.

Caitlin gets the first out of the bottom half, and then Hailey is on to pitch. Caitlin went through the lineup twice, so I suspect the change was automatic. Hailey gives up a double to the first batter, but gets two ground outs to end the inning.

Bailee entered the game in the middle of the bottom half to replace McKenzie and play center field, Asea moving to right.

Still a 3-2 lead after five.

With two outs in the sixth, Hailey issues a walk and Bailey is in to pitch, getting a strikeout to end the inning.

Shockers lead 3-2 as we go to the seventh.

Morgan opens with an infield single and moves to second on a sac bunt by Bailey. Morgan moves to third and Mackenzie is safe on an infield error. Mackenzie stole second, but Morgan is thrown out at the plate and Asea strikes out to end the threat.

Oops, they did it again. Two strikeouts, a walk and a walk-off two run homer by Piper.

                      Shockers 3-4 Ohio State

The Buckeyes tried to give the Shocks this game (three errors, part of three unearned runs for the Shockers), but they could not quite take it. Did we get too cute with the pitching changes? Probably not - they all made some sense. But how do you give up a two-out walk in front of the best hitter on their team?

Madison had a double, the only extra-base hit of the four Shocker hits. The offense continues not to help much.

By and large the pitching was effective: seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Unfortunately, two of the hits went over the fence.

Tough loss. As you say the Shocks have been there, done that with the 2-run walk off home run,

Shocks bats continue to be somehwat anemic.

Encouraged by the pitching of Caitlin and Haleigh, the two freshman.

                      Other Friday Scores

                      Michigan 2-0 Virginia Tech

                      Texas 3-0 Michigan

Be forewarned. Texas uses SidearmSports, easily the sleaziest of the LiveStats packages. It has one "window" (per sport?) per school. The stats for Michigan/Virginia Tech are up for awhile after their game, but then are replaced by the stats for Wichita State/Ohio State. You cannot find the stats for Michigan/VT via Sidearm ever again. So if you get back to a screen shortly after a Shocker game is finished, don't expect to find anything.

                        Shockers at Texas

The audio for the game is here, but there are no LiveStats - yet.

Bailey is in the circle for the Shocks. The pitcher for the Longhorns is Erica Wright who is probably their #3.

The announcer just ran down the defense for the Shocks. Sounds like how the Ohio State game ended - Bailee is center and Asea in right, in particular.

No score after an inning and a half. Have to see how this one comes out in the morning.
