Lady Shocks at Western Illinois

The Shocks play Western Illinois a DH on Wednesday. The Fighting Leathernecks (all that time in the sun?) are 7-12 on the year and 4-2 in the Summit League where they are a preseason pick for third among the nine teams. In their opening tournament of the season, they had losses to Creighton (0-8(5), 0-1) and Iowa State (0-17(5), 1-9(5)).

Game One

Katie lasts one-third of an inning before Breezy enters the scene, and the Shocks trail 3-0 after one.

Danika gets a two-run triple in the second, and then the wheels come off for Western in the third: a two-run homer from Gert, a pitching change, lost of walks and hits off the second pitcher, a return to the circle of the starting pitcher, a two-run double by Gert and the Shocks score nine to take an 11-3 lead.

Shocks score 2 in the 2nd and now have absolutely exploded in the top of the 3rd scoring 9 runs to take an 11-3 lead.

Heather G. leading the way with a 2-run jack and a 2-run double in the big 3rd inning.

Hopefully, scoring some runs like this will get the Ladies more relaxed at and productive at the plate.

Rachel has her first homer as a Shocker in the fourth for a 12-3 lead, but Breezy gives up back-to-back jacks to lead off the fifth. No five-inning run-rule.

Hilary hits *her* first career homer, a three-run shot, in the sixth, and the Shocks take a 15-5 lead to the bottom half. A six-inning run-rule in the offing?

Nah. Breezy gives up three runs (two earned) without getting an out, and Sloan comes in in relief. It appears she just ran out of gas.

The pitching we have it looks like our team is going to have to score 50 runs! Breezy can't hold them down for just one inning. Like I have said before, looks good one inning and then blows up the next. Pretty sad when your hitters go in and get runs for you and you go out and can't take them down. This is the heart and grit that is lacking.

This had to be one ugly game! We get fourteen hits and Western gives up nine walks and has five errors. We have twelve earned runs. Sloan gets the first two outs in the seventh but then gives up three runs, including a two-run homer. Still she gets the save, and Breezy gets the win.

Hitting highlights for the Shocks are the three home runs, three hits by Rachel, four rbis by Gert and Danika and three by Hilary.

This had to be one ugly game! We get fourteen hits and Western gives up nine walks and has five errors. We have twelve earned runs. Sloan gets the first two outs in the seventh but then gives up three runs, including a two-run homer. Still she gets the save, and Breezy gets the win.

Ahh, my live stats died after the third inning down 11-0?

From the WIU web site:

"The teams were slated to play a doubleheader, but the second game was called due to darkness after just four innings of play with Western Illinois leading 11-0.

The game will not count as an official game as it did not go the required five innings, though there is a possibility the teams could resume the game tomorrow at 12:30 p.m."

But perhaps it was after just three innings of play per the LiveStats.

Good catch. The lead when Sloan came in had to be three runs or less. No save.
