  • NCAA Women's Basketball Regionals

    Nobody went??!!

    Wisconsin-Green Bay 59-55 UA-Little Rock

    Michigan State 69-66 Northern Iowa

These were two really fun games to see. Early on, I heard remarks about K-State or Oklahoma not being here, but I thought from the beginning we probably had the most competitive of the Regionals - and I think I was right!

Tuesday night will have teams with matching shoes. :) It should be another fun game to watch.

Two pretty entertaining games. UNI represented the Mo Valley very well. #4 Michigan State was a big, physical team and #13 UNI simply never gave up and actually had the final posession of the game with a chance to tie but could could not get a good look from behind the arc (which is all MSU had to defend).

I have not heard an attendance figure but I'm guessing 3,000 or so.

A lot of folks left at halftime of the UNI-Michigan State game (I think MSU lead by 9 at the half).

There will be a floor full of green basketball shoes on Tuesday.

4549 says the Eagle, a number that I would think has to be pleasing to the NCAA.

It did not seem like it, but I guess the size of the building can be misleading and who knows how many corporate tickets were purchased and not used. Then again maybe there were that many butts in the seats.

I will say that that concessions certainly seemed to be doing a brisk business, although I did not personally partake in that ritual but I did notice it as we walked around the arena during the halftimes and between-game breaks.

The Dog Pound in particular seemed to be popular.

How did our attendance stack up against other neutral sites? An inquiring mind with too much time on his hands wants to know.

The sites where the host school was not playing are:
Shreveport LA - 5377 (ESPN boxscore) (although Ruston and Louisiana Tech are only an hour away)
              Wichita KS - 4549 (Eagle)
              Charlottesville VA - 3763 (ESPN)
              Auburn AL - 3383 (ESPN)
              Albuquerque NM - 2278 (ABQJournal)

              The non-neutral sites:
              Knoxville TN (Tennessee)
              University Park PA (Penn State)
              Durham NC (Duke)
              Columbus OH (Ohio State)
              Salt Lake City UT (Utah)
              Spokane WA (Gonzaga)
              Stanford CA (Doh)
              Storrs CT (UConn)
              Cincinnati OH (Xavier)
              College Park MD (Maryland)
              Waco TX (Baylor)

                Green Bay 65-56 Michigan State

What a fun game to watch! GB was just a little quicker and a little grittier. Michigan State trailed by twelve at the half and closed to one (as I recall), but GB got it back to nine and held on despite some shaky free throw shooting at the end. And GB had a bunch of fans there; they were a great group. Yeah for the mid-majors!

Now they have the pleasure of playing Baylor and Brittney Griner next weekend in Dallas.

The announced attendance was 4242, so I am sure that is the best of the neutral sites and has to help us to host future Regionals.

I thought Green Bay was the better team in just about every phase of the game and I thought they were more disciplined and better coached than Michigan State. Much better teamwork and movement in the offensive scheme and pretty aggressive and active defense also.

Still Michigan State made a game of it after Green Bay threatened to run away and hide. I thought the turning point may been right after MSU scored to pull within 41-40, one of their players fell or got tangled up and fell to the floor. Green Bay brought the ball in and rushed down the court with a 5 on 4 advantage and knocked down a 3.

We were fortunate to get 3 pretty entertaining and competitive games.

If you count the sites (six of them) where the host school was not playing in the regional finals, our attendance of 4242 was more than 2000 greater than the next site, Auburn AL. The site manager made a comment reported in the Eagle about how good the attendance was considering the teams sent here. Well, I imagine that Oklahoma or K-State would have put more people in the seats, but for those of us who just wanted to see some good, entertaining basketball, we had the most competitive regional of them all.

Green Bay being built on girls from small-town Wisconsin reminds me of the teams that Marsha Sharp had at Texas Tech, teams built on girls from small-town west Texas.
