For the last couple of years I have been making the point that we needed more pitching depth. Losing Kolb has devistated this team yet Kolb was not that good. She would have made a really good #2 pitcher on a legitimate D1 staff. I think our coaches thought that Kolb was good enough to carry us, when they should have been out looking for a real #1 to bump her back to the #2 spot. Now that she is gone, they are stuck with 3 pitchers who on most teams would only be pitching in a blowout game and they are trying to find a #1 out of that.

        Texas Southern 13-15 Shocks

We score nine in the bottom of the sixth to carry us to the win.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Wichita State (3-7) scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come from behind and beat Texas Southern (2-5) by the score of 15-13 in the final day of the Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas.

Glad we got the win, but giving up 13 runs to TX Southern? Wow! Take cover, it is going to get ugly this season.

OMG. I was expecting a win over a bad Texas Southern team but I didn't think we would give up 13 runs and have to score 9 runs (I guess we only really needed 8) to pull out a win.

Does Wilkins Stadium have a bomb shelter?

Sometimes earned and unearned runs can be a little misleading.

A pitcher gets the first two outs followed by an error then gives up 5 consecutive home runs. 6 runs score, no earned runs.

A pticher gives up 5 consecutive home runs then retires the next 3 batters in a row. 5 runs, all earned.

The best pitchers can shake off an error and pick up their teammate. Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of making very many mistakes this year of any kindl. We are probably going to have to score 5 or more runs most games to have a shot at a win. Not sure that will happen on a regular basis.

But it did happen today, and they found some bats that worked and came through with a tough one. WTG Shockers.

UTA defeated Texas Southern 10-4 in the last game of the Aggie Classic.

Next weekend the Lady Shocks head to Lubbock where they are scheduled to play St. John's twice, Norhtern Illinois twice and Texas Tech once.

Texas Tech is 11-0 a looks like that are putting ujp a lot of runs.

Northern Illiniois went 0-5 last weekend in Austin and did not put up a lot of runs but played pretty good competititon (Texas 4-8, 1-14, Tulsa 2-3, 1-6 and Louisville 1-6)

St. John's is 4-6 with a win over Florida State, a loss to Virginia, 2 losses to Hofstra and splits with UNC Greensboro, Kent State and East Carolina.

Actually, I agree with you 100%. Below are some other measurements of pitching effectiveness. Any utility is left to the judgment of the reader. :)

The favored hitting metric is on-base percentage + slugging percentage (OPS). So the converse of that for a pitcher would be Opponents OPS. Another standard metric for pitching is Walks+Hits/IP (WHIP). Still another metric strives to be defense-independent (DICE - look it up on Wikipedia if you care about the details). So those metrics for our staff YTD are below. In all cases, the lower the number the better.

                        OOPS
                        .862 Breezy
                        .815 Katie
                        .742 Sloan

                        WHIP
                        1.76 Breezy
                        1.85 Katie
                        1.47 Sloan

                        DICE
                        4.73 Breezy
                        4.13 Katie
                        3.60 Sloan

Oops, poops, whips and dips, the only stat that means anything is wins/losses. Some do it ugly and keep you on the edge of your seat, but they find a way to get it done. Somebody on our staff better figure out a way pretty soon because conference play is just around the corner.

Some people are math majors - some people are English/arts majors ("Nothing to see here; move along.") So it goes. (And you probably know the American novel that phrase is from.)

                              PROSPECTS

There are still good enough pitchers out there for the 2012, 2013,2014 Classes that have not committed. Especially to win in the MVC. It basically comes down to this Shox fans. Good pitching is going to go where they have support behind them and offensively. Plus they have to know that they will get better when they arrive on campus. They want to play for a winning program. If you people feel that all three of these questions can be answered yes then there are other problems within in the system. It boils down to having the ability to recognize a good one when you see it. Then you have to convince the recruit to come.

One unanswered question regarding attracting pitching prospects is will the addition of Margo Pruis to the staff improve our ability to attract some quality pitchers.

I guess it remains to be seen how good of a pitching coach Margo is and will be and how good of a recruiter she might be. However, she certainly has the resume as a player that might be attractive to recruits and she is not that far removed from her college playing days so she should be able to relate quite will to current players.
