The Heights women are now ranked 7th in the USA Today poll.

They won their game with West tonight 74-7. They lead at half 43-0. West didn't score until there was 1:35 left in the 3rd quarter.

That team is a killer. They haven't blown out everyone, but they've been close.

Girls basketball, boys basketball, wrestling, football. Looks like Heights is taking control of the state. I'm starting to wonder where they parked the spaceship.

"Hank Iba decided he wouldn't play my team anymore. He told me that if he tried to get his team ready to play me, it would upset his team the rest of the season." Gene Johnson, WU Basketball coach, 1928-1933.

If the USD 259 builds the new high school on the Northeast side that could have an impact on Heights ability to continue at the level it is at.

Not exactly sure where this school will be located but I assume they will draw from both Southeast and Heights currrent districts for their students. Also I am not sure on the timing and question whether current budget problem will have an impact on these plans.

BTW, Heights was up 53-0 before West scored. Yes Heights is very good, but West really has some major demographic and social issues to overcome. In my day, West was a powerhouse, especially in Football.

I wish the 50, 60 and 70 point blowouts in girls basketball were uncommon, unfortunatley they are not really that rare.

A little slice of the wide disparity between the haves and have nots in girls basketball (and other secondary sports, both boys and girls) in the public schools is the coaching. When it gets down to those sports the coaches are hired primarily as teachers and take dual duty as coach. Schools that have strong programs will go after a coach and let them teach something. It comes down to 1) having budget, 2) desire to build a bad program to a good one, 3) community apathy, etc. They get caught-up in s revolving cycle of mediocrity (or worse).

Right now, Heights has a far different demographic than it had in the 70's. You have a huge cultural disparity from which to draw talented athletes plus some more affluent areas of Wichita that did not exist even 10 years ago within their boundaries.

I am amazed by the amount of space Heights available to grow the physical plant at their campus. The other Wichtia public high schools, for the most part, are completely hemmed in at their current locations. Heights has some great facilities for the secondary sports that the other schools just don't have room to match.

Perhaps more than just a "little slice" in many cases. Look at what getting the right Coach in did for Heights football which for many years was a non-entity.

There was a nice article on the West High girls basketball coach a while back in the Eagle. I think she actually may be a decent coach. But the obstacles and difficulties she has to deal with make it very tough indeed.

I, too, believe it is more than a little slice, but I didn't want to disrespect any of the coaches. Some don't have much to work with. For many, coaching is a labor of love, fraught with frustration coming from all directions, i.e. budgetary, players, parents, administrators, etc. God bless them all for their willingness to take on the challenge.
