Doc posted the following on the Men's Basketball forum:

Tuesday night, out of conference game with no promotions.....I bet there were a solid 2100+ at the game.

    Very impressive.
My initial reaction was that Doc has mellowed a lot. OTOH, it was a school night and the crowd did seem quite a bit less populated than normal with the younger set. So I guess a reported crowd of 2,203 was pretty good.

This was a 15% jump over the Springhill Shocker Classic matches although we were admittedly up against Labor Day Weekend, the start of High School and College Football and a the lack of name opponents (despite dropping our match to Portland).

Shocker Fans will need to step it up if we hope to challenge our attendance from the last two years. Over the remaining 9 matches we will need to average 3,187 to match last year's average and 3,567 to match our 2008 attendance record. That's a pretty tall order.

We should draw a good crowd for the Evansville match on Saturday, October 16th which precedes the annual Shocker Madness event. The Shocker Madness event should attact a good showing with both the Men's and Women's teams expected to be improved this year.

I know they have a promotion planned for MSU on Friday, October 29th because I received some extra tickets for that match with my season tickets and they mentioned something about a Fill The Arena promotion.

Hopeully, the MSU match will whet Shocker Fans appetites for two important matches against Creighton and Drake the following Friday and Saturday.

Not sure if they have anything brewing for the UNI match on Friday, November 19th but if the Shocks can make this for the regular season championship (with only the Bradley match to follow) then not much promotion should be needed. That would be outstanding.

Not sure we can reach the attendance levels of the past two years in this economy. However, it would be nice to perhaps break the single match attendance record of 6,122 (vs MSU on 11/02/07).

I still contend that Shocker Volleyball season tickets are a great entertainment value.

Here is what we need to do to reach the 3,000 average attendance mark this year:

    1. Draw a combined 15,000 for the Evansville, MSU and UNI matches.

    2. Average 2,500 for the other 6 MVC home matches.

That would put us at a total of 36,021 for 12 home matches. Not easy but I think it is doable and would be a very good effort by Shocker Fans.

Wichita State is ranked 11th nationally in attendance as of Sept. 20. The Shockers are averaging 2,007 fans per match while national leader Hawaii is averaging 6,257.

Not sure where to find the attendance rankings this year. The above was in the match notes for the upcoming ILS and INS matches.

I'm guessing they pulled that ranking from the same report linked to in this Texas State release: http://www.txstatebobcats.com/news/2...921100643.aspx

However, I know that isn't a complete listing, as it doesn't include UNI, who has averaged 2100 per home match, which would put them at #10 and push WSU to #12. (of course, UNI has only had two home matches: vs. Missouri State, and vs. WSU).

Anyway, here is what that report claims as the top 36. (I'll add UNI, and adjust the rankings accordingly. Who knows what other schools aren't included, though):

        Code:
        School Avg.	Total	#
         1.	Hawai’i 6,257	68,826	11
         2.	Nebraska	6,056	24,224	4
         3.	Penn State	3,804	15,218	4

Someone at Wisconsin used to track attendance pretty accuratley, but I'm not finding that on their site this year.

I believe they are promoting this as "Jam the Gym" night. You can get tickets for $3.00 but they must be ordered in advance.

The document that the TSU site links to (that I copied most of that list from) was compiled by Diane Nordstrom, University of Wisconsin Athletic Communications.

It does carry this disclaimer though:
NOTE: These are unofficial figures kept during the season. Official figures are released by the NCAA.

By FAR, the best sports value in the entire state of Kansas this year.

                By FAR.

I really hope some of you don't piss me off this year....you know how I can get about volleyball attendance.

Tuesday nights are high school vb nights, players aren't there and neither are their parents. Which there was a way they could avoid those nights. I know men's b-ball does a good job of avoiding high school b-ball..don't know if it on purpose.

Mid-week matches for Shocer Volleyball are quite rare. They played SMU on Tuesday this year but that was an anomaly. I think someone backed out of the SpringHill Suites Shocker Classic and Lambo was happy to get another match at that time any time he could.

I'm not wild about the Friday-Saturday scheduling for MVC volleyball, but I do understand the reasons for it and that is not likely to change.
