There is no question that this is a very disappointing and unexpected loss.
Will it turn off some fairweather, bandwagon and/or casual fans. Probably.
That's just the nature of sports. I would anticipate, however, that most Shocker VB fans will hang in there with this team.
This team did knock of OU on the road, although that win lost some of its shine when the Shocks let one get away against Miami the next day.
Perhaps the team simply came into the Portland match over-confident. Hard to know that for sure. However, after their first four matches it was apparent that this team's scoring efficiency was down from what we have grown to expect (attack % of 0.199 compared to an average of around 0.250 over the past 7 seasons).
Had they hit 0.199 against Portland they probably win the match. Of course, your going to have your sub-par matches and the 0.161 they hit against Portland combined with 10 service errors wasn't good enough. The Shocks did outblock Portland 13 to 4. You don't see many teams lose matches with that kind of advantage in blocks.
I think what we have is a team with an abundance of inexperience, but also with some raw talent that will develop. This looks to be one of those years where we may have to settle with watching the stew being made and, hopefully, we will get to enjoy the meal down the road.
My expectations have been shaken somewhat by this loss, but I still expect a winning season. However, post-season play looks like a real long-shot at this point. Nevertheless, I can handle some losses and inconsistency along the way and still enjoy the process of watching Lambo make the stew.
I still contend that Shocker VB season tickets are one of the best entertainment values around and when it comes to high-quality student athletes the VB team is loaded with them.

OU was swept by #17 Tennessee and lost 3-1 to #16 Florida State. Both matches they had Francie E who didn't play against us. Not much shine left there unfortunately.

Could not agree more. Win or lose, this is a special group of young people and a fabulous support staff that deserve the support of the community.
