  • I guess the interest has died down now

The season opens tonight, and it's a big one. Oklahoma is on the brink of the top 25, picked 4th in the Big12. We've handled them the last couple of times, but I expect tonight to be a dog fight.

I wonder why there seems to be a lack of interest? It's not like there is anything else going on....

Are '72, Spangler and myself to blame for our lack of promoting?

Is 5 straight 25 win seasons not good enough?

Has the marketing department come up short this year?

I think that this team is just so unfamiliar with all the new faces that will be in the mix that it is hard to really analyze this team until we have had the opportunity to see them play and get a feel for them.

At least that is true for me. I'm excited for the season to start, but don't really have a whole lot to say about it yet.

I'd argue that the interest is right about where it was last year at this point in time. The VBall 101 dinner thread had about the same amount of posts. The first long thread was for the first tournament of the year. Think it will be the same this year. I think part of it is so much is unknown that the comments won't start coming in till we get to see/listen to them play.

Also, I expect overall attendance to be down this year. Still lots of people without jobs and for most the unemployment is going to be up if it's not already. Hopefully the ticket office will have plenty of promotions going on this year to help some families get to see some volleyball.

I thought Sully did a great job on his articles in the Eagle today. I really enjoyed the lead article about Lambo's first year and the recruitment of Karen Augspurger and Sarah Younes.

It is about all I can do to hold back on going down to Norman for this weeks Tournament but my work commitments just won't allow that this weekend.

Francie Ekwerekwu (that's easy for you to say) still roaming the court for OU.

As TMH and dregn noted so many new faces and possibilities this year. Really looking forward to who steps to the fore. How Lambo will use Chelsey should also be very itneresting.

Promoting the volleyball program at this point is subject to diminishing returns. If you are a Shocker fan and havn't gotten behind the program at this point you probably never will.

I think the thing that could expand the fan base is hosting an NCAA regional. Hopefully getting the in-floor system takes us one step closer in that direction.

I agree, that would definitely be a big plus. I don't know how much a floor like the USA Men's Volleyball team uses cost, but I would love to see that added in the future if economics allow.

One thing that has surprised me is that the student body has not gotten behind the program in larger numbers. Not sure what is would take to give that a big boost.

For the male students, I don't think we can improve on the aesthetics and the scernery aspect too much.

Youth is wasted on the young. Try to watch the shaking when you type there, '72.

I concur that this would be a great season to see lots of promos, freebies etc.

No doubt that I am placing myself at serious risk of cardiac arrest during volleyball season.

If you don't host a bcs tournament at 29-1 you never will that's just the way I fill.
First a Baseball fan then a Volleyball fan and then I guess I follow the basketball team.

The claim was that it was because of our net system. Now that we have the in-floor system, we will see if that was just an excuse or not.

Based on the number or returning starters and letterwinners the Shocks are clearly the most inexperienced tieam at the OU Tournament.

OU has 5 starters/9 letterwinners returning.

UM has 4 starters/9 letterwinners returning.

UTA has 6 starters/10 letterwinners returning.

WSU has 3 starters/6 letterwinners returning.

It is very difficult to predict how this weekend will go. I'd be very satisfied with 2 wins.
