  • Volleyball 101 Dinner

Recieved my VB season ticket renewal notice this week.

Personally I think VB season tickets are a great entertainment value at $65.

The 2nd annual Volleyball 101 dinner will be held on Saturday, August 21st. Tickets are $30 each. I enjoyed last year's dinner and I would expect an even better event this year after getting a year of experience putting this on. I think Lambo was pleasantly surprised with the success of last year's event.

Also, if you are able to I would also suggest you join the Shocker Match Club. This is going to be a stretch for me this year, but I think it is important to continue to build and maintain the VB program at a high level so I'll be joining at some level.

    September? Is that accurate?

Last season it was before the season even started if I remember correctly. That's got to be tough to manage something like that in mid season.

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

August would seem correct. Actually, I was looking at my online VB renewal account when I posted this and it shows September 21st. I used that date without really thinking about it. I double checked that and that is what it shows on my online renewal application.

I will double check my hard copy which is at home, but I would almost bet that it is on August 21st (which is a Saturday).

Edit: Hard copy does show Saturday, August 21st at 5:30 pm in the PHS multi-purpose facility. Original post corrected.

        Thanks for the catch guys.

I was able to go to the VB101 dinner last year. It was great, seeing all of the players, there were some great items to bid on at the auction, and the person who explained the volleyball rules was good. It helped me understand the game much better. This is a good event - by the way the food was very good.

Probably early August. Heard they have the usual 3 tournaments, here, OU, and somewhere out West (looking for PAC 10(11,12,13 or what ever they are). As we have learned the early tournaments are a big factor in continuning to go to the NCAA (4 times in 6 years is very impressive - what other WSU team has this recent record?)

At BYU. Outside of host BYU, it will be Loyola Marymount and Houston. Sounds like a fun road trip, but good luck ordering a beer in Provo.

Thanks BC. What does BYU bring to the table?

And does anyone know who will be in the OU tourney?

Lambo has whipped the Sooners pretty good the last couple of seasons....I was hoping to get a team that we'd be underdogs to hopefully to build some respect, or at least know where we stand.

Getting beat by Texas and Nebraska in the 2nd round doesn't seem to get us anywhere. Last year was a good chance though against ISU.

St. Louis University had an impressive OOC schedule last year but, "at the end of the day" (i.e. the NCAA tourney), WSU was much better than SLU and won easily. The OOC schedule is very important for getting invited to the tourney but, once there, it doesn't mean much.

WSU has won all of its first round matches (and lost all of its second round matches to seeded teams (i.e. Nebraska, Texas, Iowa State.)) Hopefully the NCAA selection committee takes this into account when awarding at-large bids each year.

15-14 last season. They've struggled quite a bit since head coach Jason Watson left for Arizona State after the 2007 season. In 2007 they made it to the NCAA Tournament regional final - losing to eventual champion Penn State. BYU teams have been very good in the past - ranked in the top 10 in 2000 and as high as 12 (final poll) in 2007. Apparently they have two scholarship freshmen coming in, including a 6'6" right side hitter.

I would expect that Wichita State should handle them easily. BYU could be much improved, but I get the sense that they're still in a rebuilding mode.

You improve by playing better competition. A 10th grader doesn't become a better reader by sticking with Highlights. I wouldn't say WSU was "much better" than SLU. They were better, but the Bilikens were tough and easily could have won the match imho.

It may "not mean much" once you get there, but I promise you if you take identical teams and one plays a soft schedule and the other doesn't......let's just say I'll take the latter and you can have the former.

looking at the OU volleyball schedule shows Miami (NCAA in 2009), OU(NCAA), WSU(NCAA), and UT of Arlington. OU has done well in the Big 12 and at least has the intgerity to schedule us no matter what. A couple of other Big 12 schools North of here, run when they think about playing us. Yes the Wildcats have played us and won, they pick the right time to schedule us. I do not see them scheduling us until they are forced to play us in the NCAA. Here is the OU schedule http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w...ley-sched.html

St. Louis is a counterexample to your claim. I would love to have the Shocks play Stanford, Cal, Washington, Penn State, Hawaii, Texas, etc. in the OOC and I'll bet Chris Lamb would jump at the chance to play those teams. However it doesn't always happen; look at HCGM's difficulty putting together a MBB schedule.

My point is that you can't judge a team by its schedule; some teams seem consistently better than their schedule might indicate. I have heard it said that some of WSU's toughest matches are its own practice matches; most teams don't have 20-25 (21 so far for 2010) players and they may not be fighting as hard in practice for playing time.

If all things were equal, I would agree with you that the team playing a tougher schedule has an advantage. However I'll take a WSU playing a weaker schedule over a SLU or Rice or ... playing a tougher schedule.
