Looking at http://www.goshockers.com/fls/7500/s...DB_OEM_ID=7500 and the 2009 roster caused me to think about playing time in 2009.
Mary Elizabeth Hooper (setter), Emily Stockman (OH) and Melissa Granville (DS) played in every game in 2008; this will probably not change in 2009 except that Chelsey Feekin will need some playing experience if she doesn't redshirt.
Sarah McGee (MB) and Lindsey Eckenrode (OH) played in 114 and 113 of the 116 WSU games in 2008. This may change. Stephanie Tokarz (MB) is an outstanding (but "medically limited" (feet)) player who wasn't in sync with MEH and didn't play much in 2008. Chris Lamb said in the media last spring that Hooper and Tokarz have improved their coordination but I take that with a big grain of salt. However we will need Tokarz to be playing fantastically if we want any chance of beating Texas or Nebraska in the NCAA tourney. McGee and Eckenrode should be great in 2009.
As I see it, the following players should get the vast majority of the playing time in 2009.
L: Melissa Granville (Injury backup: Sarah Waldorf (in 107 of 116 games in 2008))
DS: Sarah Waldorf, Jackie Church
MB: Sarah McGee, Stephanie Tokarz, Katie Niggemeyer
OH: Emily Stockman, Lindsey Eckenrode, Amanda Backes, (Injury backup: Kim Wadsworth)
S in a 5-1: Mary Elizabeth Hooper (Injury backup: Chelsey Feekin)
S in a 6-2: Mary Elizabeth Hooper & Chelsey Feekin
I suspect that we will not see much of MBs Jada Witham or the true freshmen MBs, OHs Dana Loganbill or the true frosh OHs, etc.
The stats from 2008 are interesting. I think WSU has to be prepared to beat Nebraska or Texas if we want to get to the Sweet 16. I think this is possible in 2009 but extremely difficult. I expect WSU to be down slightly in 2010 after losing Stockman, Eckenrode, Tokarz, Niggemeyer, Wadsworth & Granville. However McGee & Backes will be seniors and Hooper & Waldorf will be juniors and 12 players now on the roster will be sophomores or RFr. The 2011 team should be deep, experienced and talented.
