I mentioned this in the game thread, but I wonder if the fans of elite teams that host both a regional and sub-regional assume that their team will make it to the regional and so they don't attend the sub.

I'm sure Lamb will be using our attendance as a recruiting tool. Kids like to play in front of crowds and not just for one match. This is leading to better talent for our team and better wins.

The catch is going to be finding top programs willing to play us. Although it helps to have three from your conference in the NCAA tournament also.

Yeah, the same thought crossed my mind. Of course, that only applies to Texas, Penn State and Washington.

13 of the 16 seeds made it through. Hard to say how many of the Top 16 seeds would fall in a fullly seeded and accordingly placed tournament.

I think the team did fantastically and I love the team. Props to them; I'm all behind them. However ...

I don't want to sound critical of the team or coaching because they are great. (Feel free to add a bunch of ego strokes because they really had a great season.) When I look at the team in terms of what it would take to beat a Texas or Nebraska in the NCAA tourney, I see some "minor" items which might give the current Shocker teams a better chance. Of course, getting a bunch of 6'10" athletic players with great VB skills is one way to win but there are other ways. Our serving is one item we could improve. If you watched WSU play UNI or Texas or others, you see that our serves put less pressure on the other team than do their serves on us. Of course, our serving led to the 14 point run against UNI because we served against a bad rotation by UNI and we served at "weak" players. Our service game is not intended to get aces IMHO but to put pressure on the other team's defense and allow them to make errors. Our service game could sometimes (i) be more agressive and (ii) have fewer errors.

In case my opinion is not clear, I hate service errors!!!

Another place where we can improve is in our setting. MEH is wonderful but I hope she is even more wonderful as a sophomore. Sometimes she set ES or LE low so that the only choice was to hit into a block. MEH has skills and I hope she gets even better. Just so you know, I love MEH (in a sports fan manner since I don't actually know her  ).

A great year for a great team.

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

Or tip it as a defensive tactic rather than offensive. Plus we never got quicks in the middle going at a consistently high level.

I agree. She made some tremendously athletic back sets across the court, for example. Her offensive skills are a big plus. And in Austin, it appeared she made some quicks "down the net", not adjacent to her. (I am sure there is a technical term for it, but I sure don't know it! :) ) She is already doing some things we have rarely had a setter do, and she is only going to get better.

Spangler, I think I understand what you are saying but I don't think (unless we go back to the 6'10" athletic discussion) that you can increase the aggression without increasing the errors...the 2, most generally, are mutually divergent. Simply, more aggressive AND fewer errors = substantially more talent, which is what it's going to take to make the next level.

And yes, it was a hell of a season for a tremendous group of young ladies.

I disagree. Look at the serving of some of the teams we played. Aggressive serving with few service errors.

A bit belatedly, but thanks for the great season from the volleyball team. I look forward to next year!

Texas knocks off UCLA in 4 sets. Always like to see the team the knocks the Shocks off do well.

Unseeded and unranked Iowa State knocked off #11 seed Oregon tonight to move into the Elite 8.

Penn State easily disposes of Western Michigan and gets Cal in the next round. While Texas gets Iowa State. Good odds that Penn State and Texas will meet in the Final 4 in Omaha. That should be a very entertaining match.

With Nebraska knocking off Michigan in straight sets tonight the Big XII advances 3 teams into the Elite 8.

Yeah, Iowa State was dominated by the Ducks in the first two sets, squeaked out sets three and four, took control of set five early and never let up.

To complete the third round, Hawaii loses the first set to Purdue, but wins 3-1 to advance to meet #2 Stanford who dispatched Florida.

Both Nebraska and Washington won in three sets against Michigan and Utah, respectively. Nebraska is #3 seed but could have a tough match against Washington as they are playing in Seattle.

Big XII (Nebraska, Texas and Iowa State) and Pac 10(Stanford, Washington and Cal) make up 3/4ths of the Elite 8 joined by #1 Penn State and #7 Hawaii.

Perhaps, but they will have to win their semi-final matches first. :) With Penn State as the #1 seed and Texas as #3, they would not meet until the finals. I think. But then many would contend that with the NCAA ...

                            Penn State 3-0 California.

They win 21, 21 and 17. Penn State outhit Cal .256 to .116 and outblocked them 13-6. No streaming video, I assume because of ESPNU. :(

So Penn State still has yet to lose a set all season.

                              .

                              Your right.

I'm sure the NCAA is rooting for Nebraska to defeat Washington tonight.

Nebraska vs Penn State in the Semi's in Omaha won't draw a crowd much over 15,000.

                                Texas 2-1 Iowa State

Is Iowa State doing a repeat of last night? Tonight, they lost the first two sets 19 and 19 but came back to win the third set 25-17. And Texas beat them twice, 3-0, during conference play.

                                But, no.

                                Texas 3-1 Iowa State

Texas trailed early 5-8, but then caught fire and won, 25-12.
