  • Shocks vs Sycamores 10/04/08

First promo of the year. Family night. 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 popcorns and 4 drinks for $28.00.

Coming into the weekend I was thinking this would be one of our easier matches of he year. Now I don't know.

The Sycamores took MSU to 5 sets last night in Springfield and, in fact, they probably should have swept the Bears. After winning the first two sets easily 25-19 and 25-13, the Sycamores had 5 match points in Set 3 but could not convert any of them.

Nice to see the MVC bottom feeders starting to improve their programs.

Or maybe it's a sign some of the top teams are starting to slack off..

Either way, you can't say too many things just about one match.

However, ISU blue did break their 30 plus match Valley losing streak earlier this year, so I think it is fair to say they are improved (although that doesn't mean good by any stretch).

Clearly MSU, while talented, is young and not a very good team right now, so you have a valid point.

I think we got our answer about Indiana State tonight.

I wasn't able to listen, but after looking at the line score, it looked like total domination - as it should.

Way to keep it up ladies!

Would be nice to see 5,000+ for the UNI match coming up on October 17, 2008.

Although the Shocks dominated, Indiana State is definitely improved over recent years. Better athletes and better coaching. Of course, they had, and still have, a long way to go to be on par with the Shocks.

Shocks impressive on defense tonight and had one of their better blocking nights with 12 blocks vs 3 for the Sycamores while holding the Sycs to a -.082 hitting percentage. 11 of the Shocker blocks game in Sets 2 and 3.

Shocks also show of their impressvie depth led by a nice showing by Amanda Backes.

Next week the Shocks go for the record MVC road winning streak and to set up the showdown with UNI on the 17th.

                :goshocks: :good:

Great night. My niece apparently got a shirt during the mass serving they do between games 2 and 3. Her little sister was pissed. :D

Total domination by the Shox though. Lambo has high expectations for Backes.

Check out the slide show http://www.kansas.com/static/slides/100508volleyball/.

If the net is 7 1/2 feet high Sara McGee and Katie Niggemeyer must be reaching well above 10 feet when they are striking the ball. The Ind. St. players barely have their hands above the net.

                      Backes

Subgod, regarding Amanda Backes, when I went to a game recently, I noticed in the pregame warmups that she swings with her left arm. I'm not sure the Shocks have anyone else who does. I cud be wrong on that, but I haven't noticed it yet. It seems like it should be an advantage as a left side hitter. Comments?

Amanda Moore is a lefty too. Lefties are actually at a disadvantage on the left side, except for on swing hits, which is what Lambo loves using. But because the hitter has to have the ball come all the way across the body before it gets to their swinging arm, they can't really get the same approach that say, Emily gets. It's the same thing with righties on the right side.

                          Lefties

Thx for the insight. You obviously know a lot more about VB than I do although I did play a lot of intramural VB at WSU & later in an industrial league while in the AF at Wright Patt, Ohio. I'm not quite sure I understand line 2 of what you said here. I also don't know the difference between a "swing hit" and whatever else is done to spike the ball. So, Amanda Backes & Amanda Moore are more useful as ROH's, eh! Shud be a lot of competition there next year after Angela Jakubov graduates!

Nice pics, but keep in mind the angle from which those pictures were shot. Since you see the floor behind the Shocks the camera man was probably shooting from behind Indiana State from a high vantage point, such as where the Pep band sits. Nevertheless, they do show some of the athleticism that the Shocks can bring to bear.

Sorry, fixed it, the ball has to come all the way across the body. A swing hit is what you see Sarah McGee, Katie, and Tokarz do a lot, and what Sara Lungren was notorious for. They start even with or on the left side of the setter and "swing" out to the outside of the net. The best way to tell if it's a swing hit is if they jump off of one foot or not. Chances are if they do then you know it's a swing hit. If they jump off of two, it's a normal 3 step approach.
