  • Cal Poly vs. WSU match

WSU plays Cal Poly in four days (August 29). It seems like time to start a preview thread.

Look at the Mustangs roster http://www.gopoly.com/index.php?p=sp...031&tab=roster, it seems like we have a significant height advantage. Cal Poly's height goes

18 Gaby Rivera OH 6-3 RSo
5 Kylie Atherstone OPP 6-1 JR
3 Ali Waller OH 6-1 JR
8 Anna Robosson MB 6-1 RFr
1 Dominique Olowolafe MB 6-0 FR
4 Nicole Pederson MB 6-0 FR
    13 Chelsea Hayes S 5-11 SR
10 Asleigh Bertoni OH 5-11 SO
    17 Hailey Fithian S 5-11 RSo
15 Salah Schoenecke OH 5-11 SO

    In comparison, WSU has
    Stephanie Tokarz 6'5" Jr. (2008)
    Sarah McGee 6'3" So. (2008)
    Jada Witham 6'3" Fr. (2008 or 2009)
    Amanda Moore 6'2" Jr. (2008)
    Lindsey Eckenrode 6'2" Jr. (2008)
    Tina Frick 6'2" RFr. (2008)
    Angela Jakubov 6'1" Sr. (2008)
    Katie Niggemeyer 6'1" Jr. (2008)
    Dana Loganbil 6'1" Fr. (2008 or 2009)
    Emily Stockman 6'0" Jr. (2008)
    Kim Wadsworth 6'0" Jr. (2008)
    Alison Widen 6'0" Fr. (2008 or 2009)

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

    From Dec 12, 2007:
Cal Poly volleyball junior opposite Kylie Atherstone’s history-making campaign continued Wednesday morning as the two-time Big West Conference Player of the Year became the first Mustang in 18 seasons to be named to an AVCA All-America squad. Selected to the third team, Atherstone was joined in the announcement by junior middle blocker Jaclyn Houston, who garnered honorable mention consideration.

They handled us pretty easily last season. I thought we played poorly and iirc, we were still trying out a new system that we ended up abandoning shortly thereafter.

Based on what I saw last season, I would imagine that we have the horses to compete but will have to execute at mid season form to get the win.

If MEH is as good as I think she is, I like our chances. It would be a great way to start the season and immediately propel the ladies into top 20 status......

My prediction.....we lose a tight 4 set battle but end up 2-1 for the tourney.

I'm not going to OU this weekend. Do you know if the match will be broadcast so we can watch it?

Watch it? I didn't see anything on the OU site that said that would be available. I do think Mike K will have the game on the radio but I am not certain.

Height is good, but quickness is better. I would much rather have athletes who are quick, can jump, and have good court movement - horizonital, vertical and forward/backward. Being 6'2" is OK unless your vertical jump is 10" or you can't get over to the block, or you don't get into position for an attack. I like athletes who keep a ball alive for the rally, who adjust to the non-perfect set, who react to an attack where your teammates have gotten a hand on the attack. There are many things happening on the court the usual stats don't keep track of. We have two full teams of good quick athletes. How can we use this much talent to be ready for November and December?

WU, not sure I agree with your prediction.

If we are healthy, people play well, we keep fresh players on the court - SHOX win in 4 and win the tournament.

I'd love to see you right and me wrong. I just don't think we are a top 15 team.........yet. If your prediction is spot on....then we have to be in the top 20.

4 short days to go time.

On paper, there is no reason for anyone to objectively pick us to beat Cal Poly. They are higher ranked than us, and beat us last year.

That being said, I think we have the capability to win the match, but it won't be easy. I think that WuDrWu's original prediction is more realistic (and 2-1 in this field would be a good start to the year).

This weekend is essentially our only chance to earn a Top 25 ranking and to have a chance for an at-large NCAA bid. It is likely that the only match we play this year which will count in the important category of "significant wins and losses" will be our march against Cal Poly. http://www.ncaa.org/library/handbook...l_handbook.pdf (pages 10 & 11). If we lose to Cal Poly, we should expect to have to win the MVC VB tourney (even if we win all of our other matches, we may not get an at-large invitation).

I would disagree about our only chance to earn a Top 25 ranking. The year we were left out of the NCAA's we earned at Top 25 ranking. Unfortunately, you are probably right about the selection committee. We do have several opponents that may turn out to be quality teams, but Cal Poly is the only sure fire "good win" chance on our schedule.

This team will be in the top 25. Beating Cal Poly will make it happen quicker.

This team will win the MVC Tournament on their home court. None of this years Valley teams will come onto our court during the MVC Tournament and beat us.

This team will be in the NCAA for the second year in a row.

As long as we show well against the likes of Cal Poly and win the games we should, enough other teams will lose that the Shocks will move up.

Go on VolleyTalk (http://volleytalk.proboards88.com/in...?board=general), tell p-dub that WSU doesn't need to beat Cal Poly to have a chance for an at-large NCAA tourney bid and report her reply back here. A NCAA bid is more important than a Top 25 ranking IMHO.

If memory serves, pretty much all our top-25 rankings have come via attrition.

I'm well aware of p-dub. She's a highly respected poster over there and generally knows her stuff. That doesn't mean she's always right. IIRC, she defended the committee's decision to leave us out of the tournament the year we only had 3 losses.
