I found the following thread interesting. I quoted some comments by post number in the thread; you might want to read the entire thread. http://volleytalk.proboards88.com/in...d=22097&page=1
#1 terex34: i have alot of thoughts on this one , esp those teams that have no players ranked in the top 100 prospects coming out of high school.
#2 IdahoBoy®: What are you looking for?
#3 terex34: those programs that have done well and are on the rise , but dont have players in the top 100 , but have great athletes so they have to train them into good or great players, this will proablly pertain to the MID- MAJORS
# 8 baldyballer: Those are solid picks too Phaedrus. Lamb at Wichita State, Brian at Long Beach State, Texas State, and Clevland State also come to mind. But if you really think about it, there are MANY good D-1 teams built by solid training. The mid to lower majors is a proving ground for training athletes since they don't get blue chip recruits. If those schools don't go foreign and have over a .500 record it is probably due to training (or a light schedule).
#9 vbnerd: Baldy,
Long Beach State absolutely gets top 100 players, so from the initial question, they are not eligible. I'm not sure Wichita is either.
Middle Tennessee State has had foreign kids but they've taken a handful of under-the-radar athletes and made serious players out of them. They aren't for everybody, but if you can accept them, they can train you.
Phaedrus, I thought about Marshall but Billingsly did a lot of the heavy lifting there so I wasn't sure, and I would say this year would tell us a lot about the staff there.
ADDED: Independent of its correctness, the perception that WSU might get (or, at least, recruit) top 100 players is nice. Was Stephanie Tokarz a Top 100 recruit in 2004 (or 2005 - whichever year is correct)? Sara was not on the recruiting radar AFAIK. Amanda Backes or Emily Stockman might have been highly rated recruits??
