  • Lady Shocks @ Indiana State (Fri, 10/14) & Illinois State (Sun, 10/16)

The Lady Shocks (13-5, 6-1) travel to Indiana State (8-10, 2-4) for a 6:00 pm CT Friday match and then move on to Illinois State (12-7, 5-2) for a 1:00 pm CT Sunday match. A little different setup then the usual Friday - Saturday weekend schedule.

This weekend will wind up the first half of the Valley regular season.

The Shocks currently hold a one-half game lead over SIU who they swept at Koch Arena this past Monday in what was by far their best performance from the new lineup started 3 matches ago. In fact, it was one of their better performnce, if not the best, of the season.

Illinois State is tied with Missouri State 1 game behind the Lady Shocks.

The Redbirds have the usual disadvantage with the WSU/MSU travle pairing with two high quality opponents to prepare for and deal with. WSU and MSU on the other hand can afford to focus primarily on Illinois State in their match prep. Not that they can totally overlook Indiana State (who did take a set from UNI in Cedar Falls) but they should be able to handle business against the Sycamores as long as they stay reasonably focused. I expect Illinois State will be very tough and will be motivated. This will be a very important weekend for the Redbirds with both MSU and WSU on the menu.

The MSU and WSU matches with Illinois State will be the keep matches this weekend. UNI is on the road at Bradley and at Loyola. Loyola is a potential land mine for UNI. SIU should have no problem with Evansville their only match of the weekend.

Both Indiana State and Illinois State matches will be streamed on ESPN3.

Shocks breeze to a 25-13 Set 1 win but after finding themselves down 16-20 in Set 2 had to rally with a 9-3 closing run to take a 2-0 lead into intermission. Set point in the 2nd set was a net violation on Indiana State.

Emily Heibert pretty much led the way back for the Shocks in Set 2.

Indiana State is not totally devoid of talent.

Shocks down 8-11 in Set 3. Not really looking overly sharp. Passing hasn't been great. Some credit has to go to Indiana State.

Following a timeout the Shocks went on a 6-1 run to go up 14-12 and widened that lead to 3 at 20-17.

However, an attack error by Mikaela and a coupe of blocks by they Sycamores on Jody and Mikaela opened the door for a late Sycamore rally as they win Set 3 by a 25-23 score.

Shocks still struggling with their passing.

Shocks jump out to a 10-4 lead in Set 4. I believe the have 3 blocks helping to fuel the good start.

An 11-5 Shocker lead turns into an 11-8 lead forcing a Shocker timeout. Indiana State just will not go away.

Shocks up 16-12. Indiana State calls a timeout.

Shocks finally put the Sycamores away 25-18 although it wasn't easy. Sycamores made the Shocks work.

Abbie Lehman imposed her will a bit in Set 4 with her attacking and blocking.

Shocks get the 3-1 win, exhale and move on.

Wouldn't surprise me if Indiana State sneaks up on somebody this year. Indiana State is 8th place in the Vallley but don't look like the typical 8th place Valley team.

              Lambo's post game comments:

8 attacked errors in the 3rd set by the Shocks. May have lost composure a bit.

Not a great serving performance by the Shocks.

Lambo gave a lot of credit to Indiana State's defense at middle back. A lot of great digs by Indiana State.

Shocks will need to play better Sunday IMHO to win at Illinois State.

Shocks need to get in the gym as the schedule as conspired against them a bit recently. Not normally wild about the Friday - Sunday schedule but glad to have tomorrow off to work on some things.

Just now back in the house and looking at the LiveStats.

Kara four sets, Hannah two sets and Gabi one set - is that right? Although Kara may have come in to serve for Tabitha as in the past. And Regan Stiawalt three sets and Emma Tynan one set?

Kara did some serving. I don't think Hannah, Gabi and Regan played but I did not see the entirety of the match so it is possible Hanna or Gabi may have served a pointo or two.

In looking at the P-B-P looks like Hannah may have played very briefly in Sets 3 and 4.

Tough 3-match road facing the Shocks at Illinois State, then home agaisnt Missouri State next Friday with UNI at home the following Friday. Should have a decent amount of time to get some practice in which apparently as been hard to come by recently. A good opportunity for the Shocks to create a bit of space heading down the back stretch or they could just as easily stumble in those matches as well.

The box score looks believable with four sets for Kara and two for Hannah beyond the recent-typical.

Shocks jumped out to a 9-3 lead. Surrendered the lead at 14-15. Then the Shocks closed out the set on a 11-4 run to go up 1-0 at Illinois State.
