  • Shocks @ Drake (Friday) and @UNI (Saturday)

The Shocks head back out on the road as they travel to Des Moines for a 7:00 pm Friday match against Drake and then move on to always tough UNI for a 7:00 pm match in Cedar Falls on Saturday.

Drake is 10-6 overall and 1-1 in Valley with a win at Evansville and a loss at Southern Illinois. However, their non-conference schedule was not a real tough one. Drake had to go 5 sets to subdue an Evansville team (26-24, 19-25, 24-26, 25-16 and 15-13) that the Shocks and UNI pretty much dominated.

Clearly the Shocks' focus will be on UNI this weekend although they need to be careful to not totally take Drake for granted especially on the road. UNI is also 10-6 but against a much tougher schedule including losses to Michigan, Creghton, Southern Cal and Kansas. They have good wins over Kentucky (3-0) and Iowa State (3-2). The Iowa State match was a true marathon with UNI winning 2 of the first 3 sets by a combined 92-90 (27-29, 40-38, 25-23) in Cedar Falls. The Shocks were swept by Iowa State in the opening match of the season.

UNI is off to a 1-2 start in the Valley losing a 5 setter at home to Illinois State and on the road to Southern Illinois before blasting Evansville on the road.

Make no mistake this is a dangerous, well-coached and competitive UNI team. UNI does have the disadvantage (as do all Valley teams) of facing the WSU-MSU travel partner pair. So UNI does not really have the luxury of focusing its preparation mostly on the Shocks. With the Lady Bears already saddled with 2 home losses the MSU-UNI match on Friday evening will be very important to both of those teams and should be a real battle as well.

I suppose the best result for the Shocks would be a UNI win over MSU on Friday coupled with a WSU win over UNI on Saturday. Of course, 1st things 1st. The Shocks need to take care of business against Drake and not get anyone hurt in the process. The latter having been a bit of bug-a-boo this year.

The Shocks will have played 11 of 15 matches on away from home after this weekend.

UNI's loss to Illinois State was at home, but their loss to SIU and blasting of Evansville were on the road.

The Shocks will be looking to extend their winning streak over Drake to 32 consecutive matches.

Paul Suellentrop reports on the Battle of the Diggers that will go a long way towards determining the outcome of the UNI match.

From the article, Giorgia now has a brace on her leg.

Giorgia does have a torn ACL joining Jenny and Regan with that same season ending injury. Lambo says that he doesn't think they are doing anything training wise to contribute to that. Just one of those years where the law of averages catch up with you. Giorgia also tore her ACL in high school. Not sure if it was the same leg or not.

Jody's ankle is still not 100% and Lambo may try to rest her as much as possible against Drake tonight. Hopefully, the flow of the match will allow that.

Shockers 25-18 in the third for a sweep.

                    For the match, the Shocks hit .349 v .170, blocks were 4 v 5, aces-errors were -3 v -5.

The top three kill leaders were Tabitha at 11-3-27 for .296, Mikaela at 10-0-18 for .556 and Abbie at 10-2-23 for .348. Jody was at .400, Katy at .333 and Emily at .333.

                    Post-game comments:

Hats off to Tabitha who is looking more powerful, like in the spring.

Serve and pass was good. There were a low number of errors on our swings (about 9%).

It was a good night for Jody given her ankle issues.

Drake has a good team and is getting better. (Lambo provided some specifics, but I didn't bother with them.)

He likes what we are doing (given our injuries), but we need to keep growing.

No ESPN3 for tonights Volleyball match. I guess all the equipment is at the UNI-Dome for their football game with SIU.

I'm expecting a tough match and a very motivated UNI team after dropping their 3rd 5-set Valley match last night. Those losses have been to ILS and MSU at home and SIU on the road.

UNI returns pretty much everyone from last year's NCAA team.

Free admission for with a ticket from the football game.

Shocks will need to play well.

                            Northern Iowa pre-game

Don't let the record fool you - they have played a good schedule with some good wins.

In response to Mike's question if this is the way he (Lambo) would like to see Northern Iowa after last night's loss (something like that), he thinks everybody beating everybody is not good for Valley RPIs. Better is three or so teams at the top.

                              Set One

8-8 become 8-12 and the Shocks take a TO.
