There really is no excuse to struggle this badly with serve-receive. A lob serve shouldn't result in an ace.

Nabraska again in set two by 25-19. Serve-receive is still a problem, and lots of Nebraska swings off hands.

Abbie and Katie are doing well, the pins not so much. But we are not passing well enough to use them a lot.

Not only are Nebraska's float serves nasty, so are their pins. Yeesh.

              Abbie-Katie are hitting .667.

Nebraska wins the third set, 25-14. Same song, third verse.

Mash and Jaclyn and McKenzie all got in late.

Great season for the ladies and a great opportunity to play in a special volleyball environment.

Knowledgeable commentator I thought. She thought the two rotations where Abbie and Katie were on the bench was where Nebraska took advantage. "Serving took over the match" says a Nebraska assistant coach in the post-game. Then the post-game audio was off the air.

That was painful. Shocks probably don't win even if they played well but our serve-receive and passing really abandoned us tonight. I suppose a lot of that can be attributed to Nebraska but we had too many players that did not seem to be into the match mentally.

In any case, congratulations to the Shocks on a really good season.

Good to see Masher and Jacklyn get on the floor. We are really going to miss Miss Reilly.

A quote from the Volley Talk thread about this much that pretty much sums it up:

Nebraska has a huge advantage on the pins. Lehman is having a great game for Wichita State but they just can't control the ball well enough to get her the ball more. Not a good defensive performance for Wichita State, which I expected more.

Game articles from the Eagle and from goshockers. Especially watch the video of the press conference all the way to the end where Lambo pays tribute to Katie.

Sorry to see the season end on a lesser performance, but it was a terrific season!

I'm still learning the subtleties of the game, what is this pin you are referring to?

I'm a noob too but here's how I use it (someone correct me if I'm wrong) The pin is the stick on the end of the net. When people are talking about the pins referring to players, they mean the players hitting near the pin (way out on the wing). Nebraska was killing us from that position in the first two sets (I switched over to watch FVV and Co. so I didn't see the third set but I bet their pins killed us again). Their pins seemed unusually tall too, but I don't know squat.

I don't know if Nebraska is unusually tall for a Top 5 program these days but that are very big relative to most NCAA programs. Lambo has stated in the past that sometimes your opponent can just jump higher and hit harder than you can and there is little you can do about it.

The NCAA and its predecessor in women's sports the AIAW have conducted 47 national championships in women's volleyball. However, only 12 teams have won championships. That includes Sul Ros State out of Alpine, Texas who won the first 2 AIAW championships. Sul Ros State is now an NCAA D-III program. As with many sports the P-5 conferences are pouring more and more money into volleyball.

I do think parity is growing in women's volleyball but a big size advantage is much harder to combat in volleyball than it would be in basketball. I do think it will get tougher for the same 10 or so teams to dominate the sport as they have in the past not that any of them are going to drop off the volleyball map. A program like Nebraska that is a perennial Top 5 team that draws 8,000 fans to its home matches is not going away anytime but as we go forward I think we will see more teams outside of the traditional powers able to compete for national championships although the traditional powers still dominate the Top 15.

                                Nebraska Outside Hitters -

72, I looked at the stats & the roster for the Nebraska VB team: The top 5 outside hitters are all 6-3. They are Kadie Rolfzen, Mikaela Foecke, Kelsey Fien, Amber Rolfzen & Ceclia Hall.
