  • 2016 Recruiting Class

Lambo announces his 2016 recruiting class which somewhat surprisingly to me includes 8 players.

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State has signed eight volleyball players in the early signing period, Head Coach Chris Lamb announced Nov. 30.

The Shockers have 24 players on this year's roster. 3 of those players are graduating: Katie Reilly, MaryAshton Floyd and Jaclyn Roddy. Katie is a key component of this year's team but Masher has not played much down the stretch and Jaclyn played very sparingly during her career.

Unless we have more departures from this year's roster we are looking at a roster of 29 players next year. I seriously doubt that will be the case however and I am anticipating that we will have quite a few voluntary departures as some young ladies look for situations that would give them more playing time.

Lambo signed 3 defensive specialists including the youngest of the Mostrom sisters. Lambo said that Jacqui Mostrom comes in as the most skilled and prepared of the 3 sisters as a freshman and 1 local girl, Aspen Kridner of Conway Springs, who he compares to Kelly Broussard (can't get much better praise than that) and another, Kara Brown, out of Lincoln, NE that he compares to our current Valley Libero of the Year Dani Mostrom.

Lambo is adding 4 bigs at 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3 and he is also adding a small-town Kansas girl, 5-11 Regan Stiawalt out of Ness City, KS, who may be a bit of a project because she has not been exposed to high level club volleyball but who is athletic and exhibits skills that might make her a 6-rotation player which Lambo values very highly.

Looks like a very solid recruiting class but man the Inn (and the team bus) are getting very crowded.

Yes, that is where she goes to high school. However, she is listed as from Conway Springs, KS. At least that is what the press release shows. At this level these young ladies are recruited based primarily on how they perform on their club teams much more so than how they perform in high school because the club play is a much higher quality of competition and the Coaches can see a bunch of players in a short time period at club tournaments.

Of course, there are exceptions. Sara Lundgren comes to mind.

Ok, gotcha. Three liberos signed for 2016. I just don't get how he keep them all happy especially since they are most likely walk ons, but he must be doing
        something right!

Lambo mentioned on his radio show last night that one of the incoming freshmen may be built to take over the Katie Reilly role. Not sure if he meant right away or in time however.

After reading the bios and Lambo's comments my guess is he might have been referring to 6-3 Amy Pugh, a middle out of Brenham, Texas. Lambo describes her as a long and fast middle with a high motor.

I absolutely love Katie Reilly but even Lambo commented that at 6' she was somewhat undersized for the middle. If we could get 6-3 player that could match Katie's athleticism and skill we will be in great shape in the middle. However, replacing Katie's leadership skills will be a very tall order indeed.

Had the chance to see her at a tournament this fall. I had no idea we were recruiting her, but I remember watching her and thinking, "she gets to everything".

Knowing what I know now, I wish I would have watched more closely. Certainly she stood out.
