In recent years, the Shockers have been either a #3 or #4 seed in their Regional. I doubt your scenario would get them a #2 seed, although #2 and #3 are equivalent since they play each other in the opening round of a Regional.

I'm not sure I would agree with that. I would much rather play a 3-seed (approximate ranking of 33-48) than a 2-seed (approximate ranking of 17-32).

I understand your point, but assignments to Regionals in volleyball have geographic proximity as the driving factor. Trying to balance the Regionals across the country is not a priority at all if I understand correctly. So you want to avoid being a #4 seed and hope for the best after that.

Technically, there are no 2, 3 and 4 seeds at the sub-regional level in VB. They only seed the top 16 teams nationally so they are the defacto #1 seeds at whatever sub-regional they are assigned to. Whoever they play is the apparent defacto #4 seed at that regional. Which of the remaining 2 teams is the 2 seed and which is the 3 seed is very often difficult to discern. Outside of the #1 seeds the sub-regional assignments are based primarily on proximity and avoiding re-matches from the season as much as possible.

While they don't do any national seeding beyond the top #16, I do believe that once they determine the 4 teams playing at a site, they try to match up the seeded team with the "weakest" of the 3 other teams. Though I'm not sure if that is official or just tradition. (and sometimes the teams are close enough in ability that it doesn't make much difference)

Panthers looking better than they have at times the past few weeks.

Well I guess with the addition of early week matches, UNI just got the benefit of facing Loyola right after they had to play MSU and WSU. Does that make up at all for having Drake as a travel partner?

better Drake than how they used to be paired with Bradley, ugh. So I guess UNI benefits this one instance from that effect, where as WSU/MSU benefits just about every week.

And other than being consistently good programs WSU/MSU don't have much to do with that situation. Obviously, the blame belongs elsewhere. I will say that this year is the 1st year I can remember where the Valley has only a couple of teams that don't create much concern. Everyone else is perfectly capable of winning against any Valley opponent on any given night.

@1972Shocker: is correct in that their are no official seeds beyond the sixteen national seeds. You can only tell who is 2 or 3 by who is home on the scoreboard and what color jersey they wear. In the Austin Regional in past years, Lambo was miffed that the Shockers had to wear the road jerseys (don't ask me what the rules are, but he knew the Shocks were thought to be the #3 team by the color they were told to wear) in their match against Rice when he thought he had the second best team at the Regional. They beat Rice 3-1.

To me the bottom line is that as long as your are not playing the top seed it really does not matter whether you are considered the 2 or the 3 seed in your sub-regional. Either way you are playing the same team. If you are miffed because you think you are being undervalued that is easily remedied by winning that match. The way I look at these sub-regionals is that you have a top seed (one of the 16 national seeds), a bottom seed (the team that plays the top seed) and two middle seeds (who are usually very evenly matched). It would be nice just to get back to the tournament this year and I would happily take being a "3 seed" in a sub-regional right now. A lot of tough work in front of the Shocks this year to get to that point.

I stand corrected. I had assumed seeding was similar to basketball.
