  • Shockers Finish Regular Season @ Indiana State & @ Illinois State

The Lady Shocks (18-8, 12-4) will travel to Terre Haute for a 6:00 pm CST match Friday with Indiana State (17-11, 9-7) and a 7:00 pm CST Saturday match with league champion Illinois State (22-5, 16-0)to close out regular season play.

Indiana State is currently in 5th place and have clinched a spot in the Valley post-season tournament. The Shockers swept Indiana State in September at home 19, 16 and 20. I think Indiana State has gotten better since then but so have the Shocks.

Illinois State plays Missouri State on Friday. Illinois State has clinched the regular season league championship and the #1 seed in the Valley Tournament. Illinois State swept the Shockers 21, 22 and 19 in Wichita in September. The Shockers did not play well at all that night and Illinois State was clearly the superior team. However, I believe the Shocks have made great strides over the past month of so and I think they are capable of knocking of the Redbirds if they continue to play at the level they have in recent matches.

The Shocks are in a 2nd place tie with Northern Iowa and could finish anywhere from 2nd to 4th. However, UNI plays at Bradley and at Loyola and I don't see the Panthers losing to either of those teams. If UNI does win both of those matches the will own the #2 seed and the 1st round bye in the Valley Tournament as they own the tiebreaker over the Shocks by virtue of beating them twice this year.

Illinois State, with an RPI of 44 currently, is probably the only Valley school with a shot at an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Shocks (67), UNI (76) and MSU (87) are also in the Top 100 but they along with SIU and INS will have to win the Valley Tournament to make the NCAA's this year. I will be senior night for Illinois State and they will honor their 6 seniors
in a post-match ceremony. So the Redbirds will not doubt be fired up.

With Valley Tournament being held in Cedar Falls this year the Shocks have a difficult chore ahead. Winning these matches this weekend is really not that critical I suppose but at the very least I would think the Shocks want to be playing well heading into the Valley Tournament. However, winning both of these matches should provide a nice boost in confidence heading into the Tournament.

Illinois State is on the bubble (RPI-wise) for an at-large NCAA bid. If they were to lose a match or two this weekend, that (along with another loss in the MVC tourney) might drop their RPI enough to keep them out (cuz, you know, there really needs to be that 10th Pac12 team in the tourney  ).
So I'd imagine they'll still be playing hard, despite having their conference tourney spot locked up.

Last year, 44 and 47 and 51 and 53 got in as an at-large. Who knows what it will take this year, but I agree, ISU are on the bubble.

Shockers lead Indiana State 2-0 at the intermission - 20 and 22.

The outsides getting 59 swings and the middles only 20 suggests that ISUb is trying take our middles away with their defensive scheme.

          Indiana State 0-3 Shockers

          20, 22 and 22

We hit .302 to their .130. Mash was 21/3/49 for .367, Ashlyn was 14/3/25 for .440 and Jenny was 7/2/21 for .238. Abbie was held to 4/4/15 for .000. Lambo noted in the post-game that she and Emily had a hard time connecting the entire match. With the big stat differential, it was surprising that the match was this close (we only took our first lead in set three at 23-22), but Lambo pointed out the very nice job that the Sycamore setter did. He also asserted that nobody in the Valley was having a better second half than Mash. When Mikaela had to sit out with the concussion and the team went to the 5-1, Mash stepped up her game and never looked back. Lambo noted that the team needs to better after the break, to come out with better focus.

I did not get to listen tonight and just now looked at the stats. My initial reaction was as you stated, surprised the score was a close as it was based on the stats. I also had the same thought about INS maybe tried to take our Middles away. That's a ton of swings for OH's but also pretty solid hitting % as well.

That last time we played Indiana State our outside hitters were considered our weak spot. My how things have changed.

I commented to my better half a couple of times recently that the Shocks tend to come out at halftime in a little bit of a funk. I notice that they often return to the court with 2 or 3 miniutes left in the half but they generally just stand around, while I have seen a number of other teams come out and warm-up from those couple of minutes. I wonder if that is something Lambo might want to look at. I'm sure they would be doing that if he thought it was worthwhile. A good question for his radio show.

Illinois State jumped out to a 15-5 lead in Set 4. The Bears fought back to close the gap to 2 at 21-23. Live stats have been stuck at ILS 24 - MSU 22 for some time now.

Switched to the ILS radio broadcast. Apparently, ILS won Set 4 and are now up 4-1 in the 5th set.
