  • Saturday night - out on a limb . . .

I am just a newbie to VB in relative terms, but am coming around to understand the game a bit, even predicting the subs on rotations Saturday night. But, something is really bothering me about that match and I figure I'll just get it out there and see if I am badly misguided (won't be the first time even today) - so , here goes.

It appears to me Kristin Byers is a senior - the only senior on the team it seems. I assume she has been here more than one year, but even if not, my question remains. As a senior, why in the world Coach Lamb not be expected to give her some special attention at the last home game of her career? = An announcement? Possibly a symbolic starter? A little playing time in the third set?
It looked like she was only put in for the last two points after Lamb's wife told him to, and she was so visibly upset she didn't even try to touch the ball. After the game she was seen running to the dressing room in tears. Surely I have got this wrong. If so,I apologize and will take my medicine. If not, a very bad move by a good coach.
    Set me straight.

First of all Kristen is a 4th-year Junior in eligibility (due to sitting out a year after transferring) but as is quite common with VB players will graduate and move on to grad school. A decision she made at the beginning of the school year.

Lambo addressed this, I believe on last Monday's Coach's show. Apparently, they did not have the usual senior night recognition because that is the way Kristen told Lambo she wanted it. IIRC

Here is the podcast from last week. Lambo discussed Kristen (Grandma) right at the end of the show around the 27:00 minute mark.

Keep in mind that Lambo has 22 girls on his roster this year and only has 12 VB scholarships to dole out. How he can keep that many players happy is beyond me but he does it and his teams always seem to have great chemistry. So I am confident Lambo handled this the way Kristen wanted it handled and their was no oversight or intention to treat a player poorly.

And, I thank you for that. Much appreciated.

I'm assuming the tears from Kristen were most likely just from the realization that a great chapter in her life was coming to an end and that she would soon be saying farewell to many very good friends. But that's a total guess on my part. Maybe she was upset that she did not get into the match. Lambo could have easily inserted her in the 1st set with the big lead. That was probably the best time to get Kristen in the match. The last two sets were fairly competitive.

Personally, I wished they would have had some recognition of Kristen but if she was adamant that she did not want that then I think Lambo did the right thing in going along with her wishes in that regard.

I would think that if this was really a big issue for Kristen that Lambo would have made a public apology by now. Nothing was said about it on his radio show tonight. So I'm assuming everything is okay.
