  • Shocker SB at GCU Kickoff Classic

The Shockers begin their 2025 campaign this weekend with a trip to Phoenix for the Kickoff Classic hosted by Grand Canyon University. Opponents on Friday are Northern Illinois with a 3:30 pm start and GCU at 8:30 pm. Games on Saturday are against Colgate at 1 pm followed by Montana at 3:30 pm. A second game with Colgate is on Sunday at 10 am. All times are CT.

The host Antelopes have won three consecutive WAC tournament championships and were a Regional finalist in the NCAA tournament last year. They sit atop the conference Preseason Poll this year. Savannah Kirk as Player of the Year and Meghan Golden as Pitcher of the Year are Preseason Award winners. Makaiya Gomez joins them on the Preseason All-WAC team.

Northern Illinois are members of the Mid-America Conference. The Huskies are picked for eighth among the eleven teams. Pitcher Danielle Stewart was named to the All-MAC First Team last year while Alana Powell was on the All-MAC Freshman team.

The Raiders of Colgate are members of the Patriot League, where they were picked fifth of seven teams in the Preseason Poll. Seniors Jillian Herbst and Quinn Livesay are members of the Preseason All-League team.

Montana are in the Big Sky Conference. The Grizzlies are a unanimous pick for last of the six teams playing softball in the Big Sky. They were 1-14 in the conference last year.

The Shockers are picked to win the American Athletic Conference with Florida Atlantic and North Texas also receiving votes for first place. Taylor Sedlacek is a returning First Team All-Conference player while Chloe Barber was on the All-Rookie Team. Lauren Lucas is back after missing a year due to an injury.

This is a pretty soft tournament which serves as a warm-up for the Clearwater Invitational the following weekend. Not that they could beat the not-GCU teams batting opposite-handed, but still. As always, we will see what happens when the teams play the games.

flyingMoose the schedule on goshockers.com shows the GCU game at 8:30 pm. The GCU schedule shows it at 7:30 pm which is MST. During standard time Phoenix is a hour behind our CST. During the DST the time is the same as most of Arizona does not observer daylight savings time.

BTW, the GCU will be streamed on ESPN+ for those that have access to that. That is Friday at 8:30 pm,

Typo? I had the rest of the games correct. Thanks for pointing it out. It has been corrected.

            Speculation on starters?

I don't know enough to do anything but get myself in trouble, but I assume we will see Chloe vs GCU and probably again on Sunday, if at all?

I assume Sami will be a SS or 2B and Lauren Lucas in CF but more curious what you all think.

I thought I heard talk of Lucas ending up in LF this year.

                Best guess:
                3B: Kris
                SS: Taylor
                2B: Sami
                1B: ? Caroline?
                LF: Lauren
                CF: Ellee
                RF: ?
                C: Sophie

                  1B: Caroline Tallent
                  2B: Sami Hood
                  3B: Krystin Nelson
                  SS: Taylor Sedlacek
                  LF: Lauren Lucas
                  CF: Ellee Eck
                  RF: Jodie Epperson
                  C: Gabby Scott

Not confident about all of them. Sophie Johnson could start behind the plate. Mila Seaton and Sydney Zenon could get a shot at 1B. Makayla Navarro could get a shot in the middle infield, which would move Taylor potentially to RF again. She played a solid SS last year due to injuries, but I'm not entirely sure they want to keep her there. Sami could play either middle infield spot as well.

We have high expectations for Chloe Barber obviously. Alex Aguilar should have a role in the circle as well. I'm excited to see what we might have in Ava Sliger and I would guess we will see her against one of the non GCU teams this weekend. One would think Barber probably starts with Alex being the relief option.

I could see Erica Schertz maybe getting a relief opportunity somewhere.

I heard HCB talk this week, Lauren is going to be in LF this season. She is healed up, but her arm strength hasn’t come all the way back. Taylor is going to be at SS. She wasn’t sure who was going to play 1st and really big question behind the plate.

Sounds like we may have 3 centerfielders in the outfield. That should work very well.

I caught a couple of innings of this on the Plus. GCU looks like a very solid team. No doubt the Shocks will have their hands full. NIU wasn't horrible by any stretch, just over matched.

Very, very small sample size though.
