  • Shockers v USC

You will have to wait for @1972Shocker to provide another of his sterling breakdowns of the opposition.

The best I can do is provide the link to the Wichita State vs USC VT thread. :)

Among the items touched on are the derivation of our nickname and the meaning of the hand gesture used by cheerleaders and others - heavy stuff.

How come Spangler spends his entire time on volleytalk constantly playing the disrespect card, but never posts here?

Obviously as the #6 national seed USC is a damn good college VB team and has a legitimate shot at a national championship. They no doubt will be another team that throws it up high and let's their tall, long, athletice attackers go get it.

Shockers vs USC (Not sure I can say Lady Trojans) - Tale of the Tape

              Hitting Percentage: Shockers .245 - USC .264
              Opponents Hitting %: Shockers .200 - USC .178
              Kill Percentage: Shockers .379 - USC .391
              Error Percentage: Shockers .134 - USC .126
Kills Per Set: Shockers 13.80 - USC 14.61
              Aces/Service Errors Per Set: Shockers 1.23/1.77 - USC 1.28/1.96
Blocks Per Set: Shockers 2.11 - USC 2.22
Digs Per Set: Shockers 15.72 - USC 16.27
              Points Per Set: Shockers 17.14 - USC 18.12 (Points = Kills + Aces + BS + 1/2BA)

Top 6 Point Scorers (Points Per Set):

USC (88.1% of total team scoring):
6-2 Fr OH Samantha Bricio 4.70 (Out of Guadalajara, Mexico)
6-2 Sr OPP Katie Fuller 3.76
6-2 Jr OH Sara Shaw 3.31
6-5 Jr MB Alexis Olgard 2.75
6-4 Fr MB Alicia Ogoms 1.90
6-2 So OPP Emily Young 0.51

Shockers (91.0% of total team scoring):
6-2 Sr OH Emily Adney 3.52
6-2 Jr MB Ashley Andrade 2.88
              5-11 Jr OH Sam Sanders 2.77 *
6-1 Jr MB Elizabeth Field 2.53
6-0 Fr OH Ashlynn Driskill 2.53
              6-1 Jr S Chesley Feekin 2.50

              * 6-0 Fr OH Katie Reilly (1.63 PPS) will probably also play for the Shocks depending on how Sam is playing/feeling.

              Libero and Defense

USC Libero: 5-9 Jr Natalie Hagglund 5.03 digs per set. Leading scorer Samantha Bricio contributes 2.41 digs per set, Sara Shaw 2.77 digs per set and setter Hayley Crone 2.28 digs per set. Defensive specialists Monica Bollinger and Christa Alverez combined for 2.22 digs per set. Does not appear USC uses defensive specilists on the back row ala Kelsey Banwart and Jordan Hinkle for the Shocks.

Shocker Libero: 5-10 Sr Jackie Church 4.48 digs per set. Setter Chelsey Feekin 2.73 digs per set and leading scorer Emily Adney 2.26 digs per set. Defensive specialists Kelsey Banwart and Jordan Hinkle a combined 3.45 digs per set.

              Common Opponents:

              @USC 3 - Northern Iowa 0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-16)

Shocker middles have been their strength this post-season. It will be interesting to see how Ashley and Elizabeth will fare against the 6-5 and 6-4 middles of USC. Shocks seem to have a little more balanced scoring. If they can deal with USC's size in the middle and slow down USC's top 3 scorers a little bit you never know, what might happen, especially if they can frustrate USC just a little bit.

Two biggest obstacles for Lambo to deal with:
              1. A big, athletic and talented USC team.
              2. A Shocker team that might just be happy to be there.

In any case, the Shocks will no doubt be huge underdogs in this match.

Speaking of Trojans, did anyone else watch the NCAA post game video that Doc posted? I told my wife the 2 large NCAA square banners looked like 2 giant condoms; I didn't get a 'like' from my wife with that comment, but I think she agreed.

No doubt the Shocks are about to face a spectacularly talented volleyball team. There won't be single person outside of this program that thinks WSU even has a chance much less will win.

But if you weren't there, you cannot imagine the grit and determination these young ladies showed this last weekend. I am still in awe. The pressure of the moment, the fights from behind, both nights, most GREAT teams would have crumbled under that....but not our girls. They fought, and clawed and dug and worked and never got down. I don't know if I've ever been more proud of a team.

USC may run our girls out of the gym, and '72 may be right, the pure enjoyment of the moment could easily derail the focus and a further run could end before it gets started. But if our girls play their A game, and stay focused, and do the seemingly impossible and stun the volleyball world and you dismissed their chances and weren't paying attention...don't blame me.

Safe to say the USC volleyball team outdraws the men's basketball team?

The sad thing is that for all the success of the PAC 12 in volleyball, they don't tend to have people actually show up to watch them play. USC, one of the dominant volleyball programs in the nation, is only #25 in attendance with 1,513 per match (over 1,300 less per match than we average). The top PAC 12 school in attendance is Washington at only #13 in the nation.

In fact, aside from #1 Hawaii and #10 Florida, the entire top 10 consists of 6 schools from the Big 10 and 2 schools from the MVC.

Given that USC men's basketball averaged 3,970 last year, their volleyball ought to be outdrawing them if they showed up in proportion to their success rate, but alas no.

Thanks for the info. So basically, the PAC 12 doesn't draw for anything, except well, maybe, football. I guess the only reason they are a BCS conference is because of their location and infiltration of the west's major media markets. I'm sure there are some reasons behind it, namely they play second fiddle to all the pro teams out there in everything. But still, pathetic, especially for a "superior" BCS conference.
