Seven Sign with Shocker Softball on Signing Day

Wichita State head softball coach Kristi Bredbenner announced the signing of seven student-athletes to financial aid agreements Wednesday, the opening day of National Signing Week.

Trinity Allen, Jenna Edwards, Skyler Rodgers, Mackenzie Rooney, Kammie Smith, Mickayla Tosch and Kinzey Woody will join the softball program in the Fall of 2025.

"We are very excited to announce in an outstanding 2025 Shocker softball signing class," Bredbenner said. "I certainly feel that this is one of the best incoming classes we have had at Wichita State, and it will hit on all major areas of need with pitching, power, speed and defense."

Trinity Allen | 5-5 | Corner Infield | Cypress, Texas | McLennan CC | Bridgeland High School

Allen, 5-foot-5 corner infielder from Cypress, Texas, will join the Shockers after two years at McLennan Community College. She joins Tosch as the other Highlander signing in Coach Bredbenner's class. In her freshman year at McLennan, Allen hit an unreal .543 with 27 doubles and 24 home runs. She was also a sure glove at the hot corner, possessing a fielding average of .997 last season. She naturally was a first team all-conference selection last year and was named the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player. Additionally, she was named NJCAA All-Region V, NFCA NJCAA Division I West First Team All-Region, NFCA NJCAA Division I First Team All-American, NJCAA First Team All-American, and was a Rawlings NJCAA Division I Gold Glove recipient. She also set two single season records at McLennan last year, setting the hits record at 101 and the doubles record at 27. She is the daughter of Dwayne and Charlene Allen and three siblings with two brothers, Timothy and Christopher, and a sister, Chayne. She plans to major in exercise science at WSU.

Mickayla Tosch | 5-7 | Outfield | Rosenburg, Texas | McLennan CC | Foster High School

Tosch, a 5-foot-7 outfielder from Richmond, Texas, will transfer to Wichita State after competing for two years at the junior college powerhouse, McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas. In her time so far as a Highlander, she appeared in 57 of 65 games as a freshman, hitting .372 with 10 doubles, seven triples, and six home runs. She was a second team all-conference selection as a true freshman. She also received a Rawlings NJCAA Division I Gold Glove Award for her perfect fielding percentage last year. In her high school career, she was a three-time first team all-district selection and was a 2022 TSWA 5A All-State Second Team selection. She is the daughter of Mick and Carmel Tosch and has a sister, Jordan, and brother, Rob. Her mom ran cross country, and her dad played baseball at UTRGV. Tosch plans to major in business at Wichita State.

Coach Bredbenner on Allen and Tosch: "Trinity Allen and Mickayla Tosch are teammates at McClennan Community College, home of Shocker All-American CC Wong. They know how to play the game the right way and have been coached at a level that will have them ready to make a quick transition to D1 softball. Trinity is built strong, with the ability to crush the ball and be a dominant bat in the American Athletic Conference. She is athletic and plays a fantastic first base. Mickayla has one of the best softball IQ's of any softball player I have been around in the recruiting process. She's athletic, coachable and understands what it takes to be an elite outfielder."

Jenna Edwards | 5-7 | Pitcher | Carrolton, Mo. | Carrollton High School

Edwards, a 5-foot-7 pitcher from Carrollton, Mo., and Carrollton High School, is set to bring her dominant arm to Wilkins Stadium in 2026. In her most recent season, Edwards tossed 128 innings, striking out 215 batters, and holding an ERA (Earned Run Average) under 1.00 at 0.71. Her WHIP (Walks + hits / innings pitched) was a standout .664 and she held opponents' batting average to just .149. She also had success at the plate, hitting .602 with 20 doubles, and eight home runs. She is a four-time all-district and all-region pitcher and a four-time academic all-state honoree. She was named first team all-region by the NFCA and was once named as the Extra Innings Softball High School National Player of the Week. She is the daughter of Brian and Michelle Edwards. She has three siblings with two brothers, Blake and Connor, and a sister, Kate. She plans to major in marketing at WSU.

Coach Bredbenner on Edwards: "Jenna Edwards is a right-handed arm in the 2025 class. Jenna spins the ball well. She caught our eye late in the process but we are excited to get her in the program and see how she can complement our pitching staff."

Skyler Rodgers | 5-8 | Shortstop | Tuttle, Okla. | Tuttle High School

Rodgers joins the Shockers as a middle infielder from Tuttle, Okla., a city that lays just southwest of Oklahoma City. In her most recent season, Rodgers hit .409, while slugging .689. She hit 10 homers and drove in 65 runs. She also showcased her speed, going a perfect 25-for-25 on stolen bases last season. She was an all-region and all-state selection her senior year in softball. She also showcased here talent on the track, qualifying for state in both the long jump and 4x100 relay her senior year. Her 4x100 team also set the school record her senior year. She's the daughter of John and Bridget Rodgers and has one brother, Trace. Her mother Bridget attended WSU from 2003-05. She plans to major in sport management at WSU.

Coach Bredbenner on Rodgers: "Skyler Rodgers is a versatile athlete that can hit for power and average. Her ability to play a number of positions gives us some much-needed depth and athleticism. Sky has a high ceiling and with the right development could be an impact player for the Shockers."

Mackenzie Rooney | 5-3 | Outfield | Louisburg, Kan. | Louisburg High School
Rooney, a 5-3 outfielder and track star from Louisburg, Kan., will bring a major speed element to the Shockers. She is a track athlete naturally, having only played softball her freshman year at Louisburg where she played in the outfield. She has qualified for the Kansas state track tournament in three events in her track career in the 4x100, 4x400, and 300-meter hurdles. She also set the school record in the 4x100 her sophomore year. She is the daughter of Kendall and Nancy Rooney and has a brother, Jackson. Her dad and brother are both former collegiate athletes with her dad playing football competing at Carson-Newman and her brother currently competes in throwing events for the track and field team at Central Missouri. Rooney plans to major in physical therapy at Wichita State.

Coach Bredbenner on Rooney: "Mackenzie Rooney is a smooth, lefthanded outfielder from Louisburg, Kansas that will cover a ton of ground in the outfield. Mackenzie has great pop in her bat and the ability to hit for average and power."

Kammie Smith | 5-5 | Middle Infield | Sapulpa, Okla. | Kiefer High School

Smith comes to Wichita State as a middle infielder from Kiefer High School in Sapulpa, Okla. Last year, Smith hit an incredible .654 and slugged an outrageous 1.413. Of her 68 hits, 14 of them left the yard and she drove in 55 runners. She has been named District Player of the Year three consecutive years and was First Team All-State last year in Oklahoma. She holds five school records at Kiefer including single season home runs (14), fewest career strikeouts (3), career RBIs (145), career hits (214) and career fielding percentage (.981). Outside of softball, she has placed in state track in the 4x400 relay and has served as Parliamentarian in each of her last three years at Kiefer. She is the daughter of Darrell and Kendra Smith and has a sister, Skylar, and brother, Daxton. She plans to major in business at WSU.

Coach Bredbenner on Smith: "Kammie Smith is a gifted athlete that plays lockdown defense in the middle infield and swings a powerful bat. Kammie has a very calm demeanor on the field but plays with relentless passion and grit."

Kinzey Woody | 5-8 | Shortstop | Westphalia, Mo. | Fatima High School

Woody, a 5-foot-8 shortstop from Westphalia, Mo., joins the Shockers after a very successful high school career competing for the Comets. Woody is a power hitting shortstop that mashed 44 home runs in her high school career. She hit .503 for her career and hit .560 in her most recent season. She is a four-time all-district and all-region selection and is a three-time all-state selection. She was ranked as the No. 1 infielder and the No. 3 hitter in the Midwest for the class of 2025. At Fatima High School, Woody holds multiples records. Including, most homers in a career (44), most homers in a season (16), most doubles in a career (56), most career walks (96) and most walks in a season (32). Outside of softball, she is the National Honors Society Treasurer at Fatima and has a perfect 4.0 GPA. She is the daughter of Chuck and Christina Woody and has a sister, Kailey. Her mom played collegiately at Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Woody plans to major in health science at Wichita State.

Coach Bredbenner on Woody: "Kinzey Woody is a power hitting infielder and Missouri High School State champion. She is a highly decorated standout from Fatima High School who hits the ball with impressive exit velocity and will be a threat at the plate for the Shockers."

Proof that summer ball matters, Rooney hasn't played HS softball since her FR year.

Granted, you can actually learn a lot more about someone in travel ball as the competition level, especially at the highest levels, is going to be consistently better than a high school season most places.

I do like that we're adding more speed. I think we all love the power game, but it's nice to have some speed to manufacture runs and score on those balls that don't quite clear the fence.

I wonder how much the indoor facility helped with this. While it's still under construction, it'll be completed for these young ladies when they arrive.

Sounds like a pretty solid class.

I agree. Speed is less likely to take a day off than power is, especially against top tier pitching that you face in the post-season, unless your Oklahoma. Being able to manufacture runs and play small ball becomes more important in the post-season.

That said I don't see this coaching staff ever totally giving up on a power game, but a nice mix of speed and power isn't a bad thing.

Back in September I posted that I really like what I had seen (so far) in this 2025 recruiting class. However, one our commits, Mia Richards, who I was very high on, apparently had a change of heart and has signed with Texas Tech. Perhaps an NIL casualty. I wondering if the late commitment and signing of Trinity Allen might have been in response to that. I doubt HCKB was too happy about that, especially happening so late in the process.
