    Shocks vs Little Rock

    Set 1

Tied at 18-all the Shocks closed the first set on a 7-1 run during which there was only 1 kill by both teams combined.

Gonzo kill, Izzie ace, Izzi service error, LR service error, Emerson/Sarah block, Brooklyn/Sarah block, Emerson/Sarah block, Emerson/Sarah block.

I think that qualifies as a block party. Shocks lead 1-0 (25-18).

Gonzo with perhaps her best set in her young Shocker career: 5-1-7 = .571

    Set 2

Nothing but kills in the first 11 points. 10 kills (5 by each team) and a service ace by Grace Hett.

The kill party continues as 20 of the first 24 points are on kills (10 by each team).

Shocks led 15-12 at the media timeout but LR ties it at 17-all after back-to-back attack errors by Sarah. Shocker time out.

Brooklyn shows up after the TO with a kill, solo block, and a kill to restore the Shocks 3-point lead at 20-17. Little Rock time out.

Little Rock answers with the help of a Reagan service error and Brooklyn attack error to tie it at 20-all. Lambo challenges the call on Brooklyn's attack error. Call reversed. Shocks lead 21-19. A service ace from Annalie makes it 22-19. Time out Little Rock.

Shocks extend the lead to 23-19 before Little Rock scores 3 in a row to make it 23-22. Shocks call a time out. Big point coming up.

A Morgan/Brooklyn block and a Morgan kill finishes off the set.

Shocks up 2 (25-18, 25-22). Teams seem pretty evenly matched.

Gonzo dropped off quite a bit but Brooklyn and Morgan picked up the slack.

    Set 3

Either Shocks shaky or Little Rock hot early on as the Shocks are down 2-7. Shocker time out.

Shocks got the lead down to 3 at 7-10 but LR extends the lead back to 5 at 15-10 at the media timeout.

Down 13-18 the Shocks string together 3 in a row on a Brooklyn kill, an Emerson/Izzi block and an Emerson kill to pull to 16-18. Litte Rock time out.

The Shocks pull to within 1 at 20-21 but an Izzi service error makes it 20-22. Can't have that from a senior in that situation. A Little Rock kill makes it 21-23 and Lambo uses his final time out.

Little Rock closes it out on a kill and a Brooklyn attack error.

    Shocks lead 2-1 (25-18, 25-22, 21-25). Far from over.

    Set 4

A early 4-point run on a Gonzo kill, a rare Annalie kill, a LR attack error, and a Brooklyn/Sarah block turns a 3-5 Shocker deficit into a 7-5 Shocker lead and Little Rock calls a timeout.

After Little Rock tied at 7-7 a Brooklyn kill and back-to-back service aces by Annalie put the Shocks up 10-7. The Shockers extend the lead to 13-8 on 2 kills by Morgan and 1 by Izzi. Little Rock uses its 2nd time out of the set.

After the LR time out an attack error by Little Rock, and a service ace by Grace Hett sandwiched between 2 Izzi kills followed by another Grace ace extends the Shocker lead to 18-8 before an Emerson attack error ends the 8-point run by the Shockers primarily with Grace on the service line.

A 4-point run by LR closes the Shocker lead to 6 at 19-13 and Lambo uses his first time out. Too early to call it a day Shocks.

Little Rock extends their run to 6 points to close within 4 at 19-15. A Gonzo kill stops the bleeding for now. But a LR kill and service ace with Sarah somehow on the reception end closes the gap to 3 at 20-17 and Lambo calls another timeout. This would not be good to blow this lead heading into a 5th set.

Little Rock gets a kill out the timeout before a Gonzo kill, a block by Brooklyn/Sarah and a Little Rock attack error gives the Shocks a little breathing room at 23-18.

Brooklyn and Sarah answer a Little Rock block with another one of their own to give the Shocks 5 match points at 24-19. A Little Rock attack error ends the match.

Shocks win 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-19). A badly needed performance and win if for nothing else for than the Shocks' state of mind. Wins will be hard to find next weekend.

Morgan with another good match in the middle after a slow start. Morgan was 1-1-5 = .000 in the first set but 11-2-22 = .409 over the final 3 sets.

Brooklyn at 15-6-30 = .300 and 6 block assists and 1 block solo was probably the player of the game.

Gonzo and a very good first set and a poor second set but finished at 13-5-37 = .216 which is very good for her at this point.

Emerson and Sarah were not very good on the attack but contributed a total of 12 block assists, 8 of those from Sarah.

The Shocks out-blocked Little Rock 12-8 and the out-aced them 9-2 with Annalie and Grace contributing 3 aces each with only 1 service error between them. BTW, 22 digs. 7 assists and kill for Annalie to go along with the 3 ace no service error performance.

I would really like to see more of Grace Hett. She just carries herself with great assurance for a true freshman.

And for RPI reasons, Arkansas and Little Rock may have been the only two teams Lambo was interested in playing.

Did his players write FMM on their shoes?

He talked about scuttlebutt between coaches about changing to 5 years for student athletes. Just let them play 5. Across the board, outcomes are better. I took it from his comments that he believes there is a better than average chance it's going to change in the next 3 years.

Always the good details from Lambo. Maddie took some swings this week but she's not in game shape. Brooklyn's numbers are better than you think. Not connecting as well as we can with Sarah and the middles. Going to look at this weekend as an opportunity to experiment some. Miss Gabby, she can handle the 95 heat and nobody else is there just yet. Not as good defensively as he expected or needs.

Seems like a good idea, probably for all sports. Wonder if they will still have medical redshirts.

He mentioned the new two libero rule. I wonder if we will see that from the Shockers in the near future. Coach said there was a team that was using a serving specialist in the second libero position. I believe the new rules state that both liberoes cannot be on the court at the same time. There is only one spot in the rotation where the libero is not playing, usually when Morgan is serving. Not sure if both liberoes can or cannot serve, but I do know the libero can only serve in the position where they first served in each set. For example, if Annalie (L1) subs in and serves for Sarah (M2), Annalie can only serve when its the M2's turn to serve. Annalie cannot then sub in and serve for Morgan (M1), or any other position, in the same set.

Natalie was 9-3-13 for .462. Someone posted a thread for this match on Volleytalk. Natalie was one of the "Four Players to Watch" for the Mustangs.

I watched SMU a bit last week, they're pretty salty. You give Nat a couple OHs like they have and she's going to be a monster in the middle. They've done well with NIL.
