  • Shocker SB v UAB

The Shockers host UAB this weekend to continue their AAC schedule. Games are Friday and Saturday at 6 pm and Sunday at 10 am.

The Blazers are 20-22 overall and 11-7 in the conference. They won their series with USF and swept North Texas but were swept by Florida Atlantic and Tulsa among their weekends against the better AAC competition.

    [Conference only stats again]

Leading OPS for UAB belong to Bella Wiggins (1.110), Lindsay Smith (.946), and Hannah Dorsett (.909). Smith has three of the five conference home runs for the Blazers.

Leigha Kirby (ERA of 3.57 and WHIP of 1.38) has almost half of the innings for UAB. Caitlin Russell (1.57 and 1.30), Olivia Cummings (2.63 and 1.88) and Olivia Valbak (5.46 and 1.67) have almost all of the remaining innings.

The four Shocks with an OPS above 1.000 are Addison (1.645 and nine homers), CC (1.483 and six homers), Taylor (1.390 and eight homers) and Krystin (1.256).

Pitching in innings order is Alex (4.27 and 1.75), Alison (5.66 and 2.12), Lauren (3.04 and 1.63), and Chloe (6.83 and 2.14).

UAB puts 2 on with no outs and scores them both. Lucky it wasn't more.

The Shocks gets CC and Addie to 3rd and 2nd with no outs and fail to score. Terrible at bats for Taylor and Burbs and a very questionable 3rd strike call on Sami.

      After it's UAB 2 - Shocks 0.

Once again for those in the back…situational hitting.

        Quit swinging for the fences.

Yep, not a great approach. Krystin with solid contact in the 5th but right at the center fielder. That may be the only ball in play that the Shocks have squared up. UAB pitcher has kept the Shocks off balance as she has a no hitter going through 5 innings.

Allison hasn't been bad for the Shocks after a tough start.

Too bad we don’t have the bench strength, but there are 2 maybe 3 players who need some time on the bench and ponder their hitting approach.

Two hits tonight. Two. UAB’s pitcher was constantly throwing 57-58 mph, nothing overpowering at all.

Well at least we didn't get no-hit. It seems as if the scouting report on how to pitch this Shocker team is out and well shared among the AAC teams. Get ahead in the count which isn't all that difficult since the Shocks are not really 1st ball hitters and then work the outside corner for all its worth a watch the Shocks rollover ground ball, after ground ball trying to pull the those outside pitches. Until the Shocks show that can adjust to the way they are being pitched. The Shockers' 2 hits were both solidly hit balls that found the middle of the plate.

I strongly suspect there are services that can provide scouting reports on hitting, pitching, and defense of any team you are willing to pay for.

Why does it seem like all of our teams (strong exception of Track and Field, shout out to 'Bolt doing work) get their asses handed to them regularly in the scout?

                    Or is it just me?

Eh. Apples and oranges when comparing the team sports to track. You don’t strategize to make sprinters run slower and throwers throw shorter. You just have to be better.

Three groundouts for Lauren in the first. CC walks, Taylor singles, Bailey doubles home two runs and Sami follows with another double to drive Bailey in. All hits are describe to center or right-center. A change in approach? Shocks 3-0 after one.

Two Ks sandwich another groundout for Lauren in the UAB second. Jessica a walks to leadoff the second for the Shocks, and CC doubles her to third an out later. Addie follows with a three-run bomb. Three batted balls in the air this inning, and they are all oppo. Caitlin Russell is on to pitch, and Taylor doubles to left-center(!?). With two outs, Sami doubles her home. 7-0 after two.

I generally agree with that is a pretty much an apples to oranges comparison. Their is some strategizing and perhaps some scouting of the way opponents run in the distance races (800 meters and up) but otherwise it's about your athletes running faster, jumping further and higher, and throwing farther.
