  • Shocker Volleyball Classic

It's measure up time for the Shocks as they host 3 very good volleyball teams this week and weekend.

Tennessee, Colorado State and BYU went a combined 8-1 last weekend with the only loss being Tennesse's loss to #12 Florida State. The Vols defeated Cincy and Iowa State (who beat FSU). CSU picked up 3 sweeps over Virginia, Denver & Rhode Island at home. BYU matched that with sweeps of Arkansas State, Air Force and Rice this past weekend in Houston.

In this weeks AVCA poll Tennessee comes in at #14, Colorado State #24 and BYU #33. The Shocks received no votes in this weeks poll.

The scheduling is a little odd for a tournament but I'm sure Lambo did whatever it took to get these 3 quality teams to Wichita for this tournament.

The Shocks play CSU at 7:00pm on Thursday and BYU at 7:00pm on Friday.

The Shocks do not play on Saturday. CSU plays BYU at noon and then BYU plays TN at 7:00pm

The Shocks and Vols close out play with a 1:00pm match on Sunday.

No doubt the Shocks will be underdogs in all 3 of their matches. Success for the Shocks may be measured more in how well we play and how competitive we can be. Hopefully, we can at least pick off a few sets here and there. Any match wins would be very nice icing on the cake.

In any case, this is NCAA Tournament quality volleyball that will be going on at Koch Arena this week.

    Go Shocks!

I suspect because BYU does not play athletic contests on Sundays.

Perhaps, but you rarely see these 4 team tournaments spread over 4 days. Most commonly they are scheduled over 3 days. Not a big deal though.

My guess is that's why BYU is playing two matches on Saturday and perhaps CSU and/or UT said they would come if they would only have to play one match per day. There would be plenty of time available of the Shocks and Vols to play on Satuday if they wanted to.

In any case, this may be the best field we have ever had for a home tournament. Can anyone remember a better one?

2004 Green Mill Classic had Washington, Michigan State, and Arkansas. Washington was top 5 if I remember right. Shocks went 1-2 lost in 5 sets to MSU. Beat Arkansas 3-0. The 04 team was special.
First a Baseball fan then a Volleyball fan and then I guess I follow the basketball team.

Perhaps, and perhaps the schedule was arranged in this fashion as a selling point to them.

Who else was here the year UW came, the year before (I believe) they won the National Championship? That was another tournament that started on Thursday, precisely because UW would only play one match per day. The setter from that team, Courtney Thompson, is now the setter-in-waiting for the National Team.

Oops, shock10 barely in ahead of me with the answer.

Edit: Found it. UW made the Final Four in 2004, indeed were National Champions the following year (beat Nebraska 3-0) and made the Final Four again in 2006.

kind of a tangent sidenote, but evidently the AVCA now publically discloses the ballots of the coaches voting on the top 25 (at least for the time being), I find it quite interesting to see the variety of ballots and who placed which teams where. Of course, I could see them discontinuing such disclosure given how nitpicky and ornery some internet fans are, grumbling about so-and-so's ballot and whatnot.

But I digress. Sounds like quite the challenging tournament for WSU. I'm a bit jealous, as I wish UNI could host tournaments more than once ever 2-3 years. Don't know if it's due to a matter of finances/sponsors, or if it's just tough to get decent teams lined up that aren't too scared to come to Cedar Falls.

This has been Lambo's comment in the past about getting quality teams to come to Wichita. He often commends Coach Restropo at Oklahoma for his willingness to play us every year which others in the area are unwilling to do.

Hey Shocker fans...a plea I know, but this tournament means a lot to these girls and this program. I realize everyone has their priorities and times are tough and everyone is busy, but this a BIG BIG weekend.

Your support is important and your presence will be appreciated, and frankly these girls deserve it.

Hope to see THOUSANDS of Shockers fans in attendance tonight and throughout the weekend.

                GO SHOCKS!

Love that video commercial and it's just like Paul said it would be...simple and promoting the athletes...that's the best thing you can do for Shocker Volleyball.

You still have a shot at one match Sub. The Shocks do not play on Saturday. They play Colorado State tonight, BYU on Friday night and Tennessee at 1:00pm on Sunday.

Hope you can make it. They all will be very tough this week, that that Tennessee match may be the toughest of the bunch. The Ladies will no doubt need all the moral support we can muster as Shocker fans.

It is indeed a Kanye West song called Homecoming but Chris Martin from Coldplay is the featured vocalist.
