The Shockers may actually be at a disadvantage against the group of northern schools with the weather forecasted for this weekend. Friday might be somewhat bearable although the wind chills will make it feel like mid-40's temps.

Saturday and Sunday will be challenging with highs of 41 before taking into account the wind chill.

Any home runs in this tournament will be well earned.

It appears that Minnesota says, "We are not playing in those Sat/Sun temps." There is an NCAA table somewhere that says under certain temperature/wind-chill conditions, games should not (cannot?) be played. Maybe I can find it.

EDIT: There is a temp/wc chart in the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook that says how long until frostbite occurs under certain conditions. :) I am not sure that is actionable information. It will not surprise me if Sat/Sun is cancelled. Each team gets two games on Friday, so ...

Maybe the Softball upgrades need to be revised to include a domed stadium with a retractable roof. Does Charles Koch have any granddaughters that play softball?

Minnesota hosted a tournament last weekend in the US Bank Stadium, a first for them.

Minnesota is now playing in Stillwater on Saturday and Sunday. Originally that tournament was Okie State, Arizona State, and Central Florida. UCF dropped out? Minny had a chance to play better opponents? I am on the case.

EDIT: UCF is still there. OSU has not updated the schedule, and they are the ones who should know. Perhaps, no es importa.

The Shocker Invitational continues the current homestand. Northern Colorado, Minnesota, and South Dakota State come to town, although in the case of Minnesota, only for one day. Then they head to Stillwater to play Saturday and Sunday.

Northern Colorado are a member of the Big Sky Conference where they are a preseason pick for last of the six schools playing softball. Their current record is 12-10. Paola Villegas (OPS of 1.051) and Alexsi Barashkoff (1.005 and a team-leading three home runs) are the only batters with an OPS above .900. The vast majority of the innings belong to Erin Caviness (69.0 IP with an ERA of 2.94 and WHIP of 1.23) and Isabelle DiNapoli (57.1, 4.52, and 1.64).

Minnesota have a record of 16-9 with a 3-3 mark against ranked teams. Like the Shockers, they have a one-run loss to San Diego State. Leading hitters are Taylor Krapf (1.224 and nine home runs) and Addison Leschber (1.113) with OPS over 1.000. Breezy Burnett (.990) and Maddy Ehlke (.973) are close. (I had to include Breezy somehow.) All of the innings belong to Autumn Pease (87.0, 1.05, 0.72) and Jackie Hambrick (57.1, 2.08, 1.20).

South Dakota State, two-time defending Summit League champions, are the pick again this year. Their record is 15-12. A split withBaylor on Wednesday give then a record of 1-5 against ranked teams including Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Stanford. They have a reasonable record against a stout schedule. Mia Jarecki (1.141 and five homers) is the only hitter with an OPA above .900. The pitching staff is led by Tori Kniesche (ERA of 2.46 nd WHIP of 1.14) and Shannon Lacey (4.03 and 1.65). Kniesche was All-Region last year.

For the Shocks, the same six, Sydney down to Taylor, continue to have an OPS greater than 1.00. Lo is now 1.77 and 1.03. Alison (3.14 and 1.50) and Alex (2.04 and 1.06) have almost all of the rest of the innings.

                  Other Friday Games

Northern Colorado 0-1(8) South Dakota State
A pair of three-hitters with the game decided on an error while using the tie-breaker

                  South Dakota State 5-9 Minnesota
Two crooked numbers by each team, but those of the Golden Gophers were bigger

After two outs on comebackers, Alison gives up a solo home run. An error and a single continue the inning, but she gets a strikeout to end it. 1-0 Bears in the middle of the first. Sydney singles and Addison homers to quickly give the Shockers the lead. 2-1 after one.

In the second, a single is followed by a Sami Special: line drive into a 4-3 DP. For the Shockers with one out, Lainee doubles and Krystin singles her home. 3-1 after two.

Three groundouts in the Northern Colorado third. Lolo homers in the Shocker third. 4-1 Shocks after three.

With one out, the Bears get runners on with a walk and a single. A groundout moves them up, a hit batter loads them up, but a K ends the threat. Still 4-1 in the middle of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, Taylor singles and Lainee doubles to start the inning. Krystin's groundout moves both runners up a base, scoring Taylor. Syd follows with a single that plates Lainee. With two outs, Sydney steals second and Lauren puts down a bunt single. Runners at the corners, but Zoe flys out to end the inning. Shockers lead 6-1 after four complete.

UNC's pitcher going sleeveless. I think she is the only one in the ballpark doing that today. Maybe trying to initimidate the Shocks.

Addison's 1st inning home run moves her into sole possession of the WSU career home run record. I believe that was her 59th home run of her career. Hopefully, she can get going.

The 3-2 pitch Lolo struck out on looked to be right in her wheelhouse but she swung through it.

The UNC pitcher is throwing a lot or rise balls and balls up in the zone.

The 8 and 9 hole hitters produce a run in the 2nd. Lainee's double was on an 0-2 pitch after fouling off 3 pitches and pretty much hit about a foot below the top of the fence and a foot or less inside the foul line. Kristin's single to right center easily scored the less than speedy Lainee. Kristin may be the hottest hitter on the team right now..

After 2 easy outs in the bottom of the 3rd, Lolo got pretty much the same pitch that she struck out on in the 1st inning and this time did not miss as she blasted a no doubter well beyond the right field party pavilion.

After the Shocks had already plated 2 runs in the 4th Zoe just did miss a 3-run home. Got under it just a hair too much and sent the centerfielder to the warning track.

While I was wrong about the UNC starting pitcher. The relief pitcher is also sleeveless today.

Alex is on to start the fifth for the Shocks. A walk after two strikeouts, but nothing more. 6-1 in the middle of the fifth.

Gone for the duration of this one - a lot, maybe all, of the next one, too.
