Go Shockers - Bredbenner Announces Loaded 2023 Softball Schedule
Sounds like a strong schedule that will test and prepare us.
WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State softball's road to a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance will feature a schedule that includes games against 12 NCAA Tournament participants from a season ago and 27 games at Wilkins Stadium.
Last season Wichita State played the role of road warriors, having just 11 home games all year, but that changes in 2023. Head Coach Kristi Bredbenner enters her 12th season at the helm of the softball program, and for the first time during her tenure will host three spring tournaments in Wilkins Stadium during the month of March.
The season officially kicks off the weekend of Feb. 10-12 in San Marcos, Texas at the Bobcat Classic. Wichita State will face Villanova, Kent State and Texas State over three days. The Villanova Wildcats are the first of 12 NCAA Tournament teams on the docket in 2023.
Wichita State will then hop on a flight for San Diego, Calif. A matchup against San Diego State on Feb. 16 opens a six-game stretch in California. The University of San Diego will host a tournament that features Utah Tech, Boise State and Fairleigh Dickinson over the next three days.
Rounding out the month of February is another trip to the Lone Star State for a pair of games against Northwestern State and North Texas in Denton, Feb. 25-26.
The first of three home tournaments kicks off the month of March. Wichita State welcomes Western Illinois and Bradley for the Black & Yellow Challenge, March 4-5, before hosting Stanford for a midweek matchup on March 9.
Nebraska, Missouri State, Minnesota and Northern Colorado all make the trip to Wichita on back-to-back weekends for the Shocker Classic and Shocker Invitational. Sandwiched between those two tournaments is another midweek game against Arkansas. The Razorbacks advanced to the Super Regionals a season ago and were the SEC Champions.
Wichita State's first contest against Kansas will take place March 22 in Wichita. The only time the Shockers leave Wichita during the month of March is for the American Athletic Conference opener at UCF, March 24-26.
The Shockers return after that brief road trip to host Omaha, South Florida and Oklahoma State.
Wichita State will also see conference foes Houston and East Carolina in Wilkins Stadium. League road trips include Memphis and Tulsa.
After hosting Oklahoma State on April 4, Wichita State makes the return trip to Stillwater on April 19. The two-time defending National Champion Oklahoma Sooners come to Wilkins Stadium for the home finale on April 25.
Wichita State wraps up regular season play in Lawrence vs. the Jayhawks on May 3.
The 2023 American Athletic Conference Championship will be in Tampa, Fla., May 11-13, hosted by South Florida.
