  • Shocker VB @ ECU & Temple

    WICHITA STATE (11-11, 6-5 American)

    Friday, Nov. 4 (5:00 p.m. CT) at East Carolina (8-16, 3-9 American)
    Greenville, North Carolina (Minges Coliseum)
    Live Stats // Watch

    Sunday, Nov. 6 (12:00 p.m. CT) at Temple (9-14, 3-9 American)
    Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (McGonigle Hall)
    Live Stats // Watch

    SCOUTING THE PIRATES:
    • The Pirates enter the weekend with an overall record of 8-16, including 3-9 in American Athletic Conference play. East Carolina needs just two more wins to surpass their 9-20 mark from a season ago.
    • ECU picked up wins against Furman and Norfolk State at their home tournament to open the season, then added a pair of W's against Navy and Old Dominion in Norfolk before wrapping up the Virginia Tournament with a victory over Mercer.
    • East Carolina's offense ranks down near the bottom of the AAC in several major offensive categories, including kills per set (11.35) and assists per set (10.36). The Pirates do not have any individual hitters in the top ten of the conference in hitting percentage.
    • The Pirates supplement a lack of conventional scoring prowess with excellent serving numbers and a strong block. East Carolina is third on the circuit in service aces per set (1.51) and third in blocks per set (2.24), just 0.01 behind second place Wichita State.
    • Head coach Adler Augustin is now in his third season at the helm of the Pirates following a stint as an assistant at Stephen F. Austin.

    SCOUTING THE OWLS:
    • After struggling to a 7-24 campaign a season ago, Temple has already surpassed their previous win total with a 9-14 (3-9) record entering play on Friday. The Owls have one common opponent with the Shockers, falling in straight sets against then-20th-ranked Kansas in early September.
    • Head coach Linda Hampton-Keith is in her first season in Philadelphia, succeeding longtime Owls head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. Hampton-Keith comes to Temple after a successful stint as an assistant coach at Louisville, where she helped the Cardinals reach the 2021 NCAA Final Four. She also has previous head coach experience at North Carolina State.
    • The Owls lean heavily upon the scoring prowess of outside hitter Taylor Davenport, whose 4.21 points per set are 1.52 more than the next closest Temple player. Wichita State forced Davenport into a season-worst -.167 hitting percentage in the first meeting.
    • Former AAC Libero of the Year Falanika Danielson is coming off a season-high 26 digs in a five-set victory over Tulane. Peyton Boyd also turned in a highlight performance, racking up 20 kills and 15 digs in the Owls second five-set win over the Green Wave this season.

The Shocks cannot afford a stumble against these two teams this weekend if they want to play in the NIVC as Lambo indicated was his goal at this point. After the performance in the loss at Tulane I don't take anything as a given.

In short, the WSU title of "WSU Overwhelms East Carolina" may be stretching things a little. 27-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-16 just might be pushing it.

Nevertheless, a road win is a road win. Congrats ladies!!

Quick start for the Shocks. Temple looks asleep but at least the Shocks are taking advantage. 6-0 Timeout Owls.

Another point and a serve receive error before Kayce finally has a service error to give Temple their 1st point.

                    Shocks immediately side out. 9-1.

Temple finally scores their 1st point but it took a lot to get there. Shocks moving and swinging well early. 10-2

Morgan Stout gets an ace. Rohling gets the kill. Shocks continue the strong play. Temple scores again, but they are having to work HARD to get these points.

                    12-3 Shocks.

Temple finally scores on their serve....twice. 12-5. 12-6 on a Kelly receive error. We have to hide her better in the back row. Foster obliterates one to end the Owl run. 13-6.

Temple hitting error, 14-6 (Katie serving). Kill Foster. 15-6. Block Weber/Foster 16-6. Temple middle kill 16-7.

Foster puts down the overpass. Aggressive swings today by the Shocks, especially on overpasses and serves. Shock block Kelly/Foster get another. 19-8 and Temple takes their 2nd timeout. Shocks pretty much dominating.

Exchanging side outs, Kayce serving very aggressively sets up a Kelly kill. 22-11.

More sideouts. 23-12 Kelly serves, Stout gets the kill on a dink attempt. 24-12 Kelly service error. 24-13.

Kelly out of the back row for the set 25-13.

Kills were only 12-8 WSU but the Shocks were (obviously) much much cleaner (and served incredibly well).

At 1-1 Rohling tipped wide but challenged that Temple touched. Replay didn't show me enough to overturn. Announcers say 100% touch. I still don't see it (but my eyes are getting terrible). Officials see it my way, no overturn. Announcers completely stunned. 2-1 Temple.

Perfect pass, set and Rohling puts it straight down. 2-2.

                        Rohling stuffed 2-3.

Middle kill on an almost perfect pass, set and kill by Frosty. 3-3.

Foster hits it wide unnecessarily. 3-4.

                        Kayce dumps 4-4.

Shocks continue to serve tough, Weber gets a couple before Temple sides out. 6-5.

Foster kill, Stout buries the overpass 8-5.

Kelly hammers a running set from Kayce 9-6.

Temple hanging tough and playing much better this set. 9-7.

Stout/Kelly block 10-7. Tough Kelly serve leads to a Sophia kill. Kelly service error. 11-8.

Kelly receive error. 11-9. Shocks in the net 11-10. Weber kill 12-10. Shocks really getting some good swings. Kayce hasn't been very good lately, but she is playing well today.

Foster kill 13-10. Foster/Sophia block. 14-10. Stout serving very well. 15-10. Media timeout.

15-10 becomes 15-12 before a great set from Kayce sets up Foster for a great swing. 16-12 and Temple takes a timeout for reasons I can't quite explain, considering the media timeout was 3 points ago, and they've won 2 of those 3 points.

Back and forth then Weber gets 3 on her serve before 2 Kelly hitting errors (one out, one off the antennae) 20-16. Foster hammers one. 21-16.

                          Temple dumps 21-17.

Kelly kill from the left side. 22-17.

Kayce clean ace. 23-17. Another strong serve leads to an Owl hitting error. 24-17. Stout into the net on a silly push attempt (she does that too often).

Good set point includes Lara playing one off the ceiling, several blocks and Kelly gets the winning block 25-18 2-0 Shocks.

Back and forth out of system points to start the 3rd. 3-4 Temple.

Shocks with 3 in a row, and I'm noticing the Temple "banging of the chairs for the first time when we're serving".

Stout serving tough, and the Shocks starting to put a few down. 8-4 Stout still serving tough, Stout digs and Sophia puts one away. Temple finally sides out 9-5 Shocks.

Foster puts one down in the middle 10-5 and Temple takes a timeout.

Bucking the most successful trend in volleyball, Katie gets an ace out of the timeout. 11-6.

Kayce choosing her dumps much better today, gets another 12-6.

                            Temple challenges something here.

Apparently Kayce was in the net at some point. Reversal.

                              Little busy this set, sorry.

15-11 after a Stout push kill.

                              Temple in the middle 15-12.

Weber hits long, looked like she turned an ankle but seems ok. 15-13. Poor serve receive (and more annoying chair banging) leads to another Owl point. 15-14 and timeout Lambo.

Teams exchange blocks before a Kelly receive error. 16-16.

Back and forth 17-18 Temple (Owls got an ace in there).

Got busy, Shocks fell apart late 21-25 Owls
