KOLN - Homegrown slugger leads college softball's home runs race

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Off-season workouts consist of batting practice and training sessions in Beatrice, Nebraska for college softball’s home runs leader. Addie Barnard is back in her hometown after slugging a record-setting 33 homers during her sophomore season at Wichita State. Barnard’s total ranks third-best in NCAA history.

“I never pictured myself, a little girl from Beatrice, Nebraska, being among those names and even touching those kinds of records,” Barnard said. “ I was just trying to get on base and the home runs came along. I was like ‘Wow.’”

Barnard believes her success is a result of strategic training prior to the season. Following a fantastic freshman campaign, Barnard knew opponents would learn her hitting tendencies. Also, Barnard expected opponents to start pitching her fewer strikes.

“When season rolled around, I was ready to go,” Barnard said. “Its been awesome.”

Sounds like she may give some hitting lessons to some of the youngsters of Beatrice this summer as well.

It was also noted in this article that Addie is playing in an invite-only tournament in Canada later this month.

That's just a remarkable story, and one that's both refreshing and encouraging. That she's a humble farm girl makes it even better, to many of us from this area. Relatable maybe a good word. If you aren't an Addie fan (or Sydney for that matter) it might be time to check your own internal clock.

Saw a tweet about Addie getting behind the plate to call balls and strikes while back home. Pretty cool to see her getting that involved with the local youth.

Apparently Syd and Addie are playing in the Canada Cup International Softball Championship for the Triple Crown Colorado team in Surrey, British Columbia (an eastern suburb of Vancouver).

Just based off of what I've seen on Twitter, Syd is having herself a good time on the diamond up there.

Team Alliance, which Syd is playing for this summer, will take on an All-Star team of players comprised of the Sunflower Summer College Softball League which is a local summer league in its first year and started by former Shocker, Casey Walkup. I lost the list, but a handful of Shockers are playing in the league this summer. I think I saw where the league has four teams and around 50 college athletes competing. I saw somewhere that they'd planned on six teams, but that apparently fell through.

Regardless, Alliance and the All-Stars will face off in a three game series in OKC at the end of the month. I believe it'll be the 24th and 25th.

The Sunflower championship I believe is being played at Valley Center HS this weekend. I need to look more into this league. I believe it's the only summer softball league for college girls outside of Florida. Hopefully it's done well enough to continue and grow.
