We can use this as the game thread as well if you guys want.
Shocks open play next Friday in Jonesboro Arkansas at 10AM vs Missouri State then later that afternoon vs UT Martin. Saturday vs host Arkansas State at 2pm completes the opening weekend.
Missouri State should look very familiar. The Bears return basically their entire team from the match vs WSU earlier this year. A match WSU was quite fortunate to win.
The only player of any significance that doesn't return is Reagan Casey, a MB who had just a few swings in that match. Reagan transferred to a D2 school over the summer.
The Bears return 2 first team all Valley OHs in Flynn and Cink. They are 2 of the busiest OHs in the country. Both players totaled over 1000 attacks last season. By comparison, the Shocks leading attacker was Sophia Rohling with 431 total attacks. They also return both leading DS, their setter, RS and another MB. The Bears are picked 4th in the Valley where the top 4 are very close. They will be all we can handle out of the gate. We struggled to handle Cink and Flynn in the spring when everyone in the gym knew where the ball was going.
UT Martin should be fodder in the 2nd match. They are picked 6th in the OVS and had an unremarkable 20-21 season at 6-10. 6'0" senior OH Logan Wallick was a 2nd team all conference performer last season and is one of 14 picked 1st team preseason this fall. The SkyHawks shouldn't give the Shocks too many problems at 5PM on Friday.
The Red Wolves are picked 3rd in the West Division of the Sun Belt. They have one player on the preseason all conference team, 6'4 covid redshirt (at Missouri State apparently) sophomore Kendahl Davenport who set the school record for blocks per set last season. The Red Wolves have the potential to run out a huge team. In addition to the 6'4" Davenport, they have 6'4" freshman MB Mariah Hesselgesser and 6'5" redshirt freshman transfer from Kansas State (Desoto HS) Faith Hammontree. They also have Alayda Dincer a 6'0" OH from Turkey who has transferred in from Temple where she played sparingly last season & 6'1 opposite OH Elise Wilcox who transferred in from Toledo where she had a couple of productive seasons before a very quiet 20-21 season.
The Red Wolves could be a problem with a lot of new size available. You'll want to see how they do Friday.
