  • Non Conference Preview

We can use this as the game thread as well if you guys want.

Shocks open play next Friday in Jonesboro Arkansas at 10AM vs Missouri State then later that afternoon vs UT Martin. Saturday vs host Arkansas State at 2pm completes the opening weekend.

Missouri State should look very familiar. The Bears return basically their entire team from the match vs WSU earlier this year. A match WSU was quite fortunate to win.

The only player of any significance that doesn't return is Reagan Casey, a MB who had just a few swings in that match. Reagan transferred to a D2 school over the summer.

The Bears return 2 first team all Valley OHs in Flynn and Cink. They are 2 of the busiest OHs in the country. Both players totaled over 1000 attacks last season. By comparison, the Shocks leading attacker was Sophia Rohling with 431 total attacks. They also return both leading DS, their setter, RS and another MB. The Bears are picked 4th in the Valley where the top 4 are very close. They will be all we can handle out of the gate. We struggled to handle Cink and Flynn in the spring when everyone in the gym knew where the ball was going.

UT Martin should be fodder in the 2nd match. They are picked 6th in the OVS and had an unremarkable 20-21 season at 6-10. 6'0" senior OH Logan Wallick was a 2nd team all conference performer last season and is one of 14 picked 1st team preseason this fall. The SkyHawks shouldn't give the Shocks too many problems at 5PM on Friday.

The Red Wolves are picked 3rd in the West Division of the Sun Belt. They have one player on the preseason all conference team, 6'4 covid redshirt (at Missouri State apparently) sophomore Kendahl Davenport who set the school record for blocks per set last season. The Red Wolves have the potential to run out a huge team. In addition to the 6'4" Davenport, they have 6'4" freshman MB Mariah Hesselgesser and 6'5" redshirt freshman transfer from Kansas State (Desoto HS) Faith Hammontree. They also have Alayda Dincer a 6'0" OH from Turkey who has transferred in from Temple where she played sparingly last season & 6'1 opposite OH Elise Wilcox who transferred in from Toledo where she had a couple of productive seasons before a very quiet 20-21 season.

The Red Wolves could be a problem with a lot of new size available. You'll want to see how they do Friday.

Not sure what to take from the Bears exhibition at Arkansas.

    Hogs won the match 3-1 18, (21), 21, 21.

Bears led at the break in sets 3 and 4.

But it's hard to tell why the Bears played who they played. Brooklyn Cink only took 7 swings in 2 sets with no kills. Not even sure I can trust the stats because they show FR setter Morgan Sprague (she definitely played the most) with 26 assists in 3 games. Not sure who set the other game because nobody else had more than 3. Also, expected and returning setter Kennedy Anderson didn't play at all. Just seems odd.

Arkansas hit .356 and MSU only .167 The Bears were certainly helped hugely with 8 aces against only 7 SE while Arkansas had only 3 aces and an insane 17 service errors.

I didn't watch the match, but Arkansas is a quality volleyball team, probably just outside the top 25 type. Even though the Bears were overpowered (.356 vs. .167) I think they will be a quality opponent next weekend and maybe have improved substantially since our spring meeting.

How is the setter position working out? Sounds like it may still be up for grabs.

What role will newcomer Kailin Newsome play as a left-side attacker? Lamb sees Newsome and returner Morgan Weber as possible six-rotation pin players.

What's next for Sophia Rohling? Teams are going to be preparing for her and doing everything they can to deal with her.

What will the back row look like this season? A move to a 5-1 will give Wichita State's defensive specialists more responsibility and Lamb believes that group will respond.

What stands out about the schedule? The American will be loaded with experience this season with all 12 all-conference selections back for another season.

Hopefully, we'll start getting some answers starting this Friday. Doesn't sound like we are anywhere close to having a settled lineup at this point.

Looks like only the matches involving Arkansas State are on ESPN+. The Shocks play the Red Wolves at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

Also, I do not see any of the matches schedule on Shocker HD Audio Streaming at this point. So apparently Live Stats will be our only means of following the two Shocker matches on Friday vs Missouri State at 10:00 am and UT Martin at 5:00 pm. I suppose that is subject to change.

Reading between the lines, that was as scary a preview as I can remember.
