  • 2019 Attendance

The Shockers had an average attendance of 1838, good for 23rd in the country.

In the AAC, SMU was next at 838 while Tulsa was last with 189.

So men's basketball is not the only sport suffering a decline in attendance. Of course, this has been going on for a number of years now.

I have a feeling the volleyball attendance is going to change direction next year.

You have those of us who watched Phil Shoemaker and the Shocks at the Heskett Center, watched because they liked volleyball. You also have those who like the Shockers and will come to watch teams who are doing well. When they aren't, not so much.

But the general decline in college athletics attendance is clearly also a factor.

It should although it might take another year before changing direction. We are a long way from the 3,177 we averaged in 2008. No doubt the on the court performance over the past two season have had a significant impact. Also keep in mind that these numbers are paid attendance. Tickets scanned especially as this past season progressed appeared to decline quite a bit.

Excluding the two NCAA Tournament matches in 2017 all of the Shocks Top 10 single-match attendance numbers occurred prior to 2015. Even the great Emily Heibert/Abbie Lehman teams of 2016 and 2017 do not have a match on this list. None of this year's matches including the BYU/VCU/Texas home tournament or the AAC home match vs the Jordan Thompson lead Cincinnati Bearcats came close to being a top 10 attended match. It would take 4,220 fans to edge into the top 10 attended matches. These 4 matches drew 2,608, 2,435. 2,387 and 1,617.

Note that 2015 was the year that the Valley began streaming matches on ESPN3 and most matches have been available to watch at home since that time.

One thing that is not particularly an issue for volleyball as it is for men's basketball is cost and parking. Ticket prices are extremely reasonable, especially season tickets, and parking is generally not an issue.
